It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

The captivating melodrama of "Downton Abbey" would be but window dressing without its spectacular ensemble to bring these characters to life. Even when some favorites ended up leaving the show, series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") always had someone interesting to add to the roster. For every Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) or Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay), there was an Andy (Michael Fox) or Lady Rose (Lily James) to round out the cast. Even if you look the upstairs and downstairs crew within their own groups, in each you'll find a wealth of...

Downton Abbey has had a long and exciting run.
We had six seasons of, holiday-themed specials, and two movies.
Hugh Bonneville, who has been with the franchise since the beginning, thinks the franchise could be over after the latest movie.
“I suspect, if there is [a new series], it would be a reboot. An origin story or something like that,” the star said to The Hollywood Reporter of rumors of a TV comeback.
The star said that Bridgerton highlighted that "there's clearly an appetite for these sorts of shows."
"Bridgerton has been a magnificent success,” he continued.
“So if you can capture the younger generation to enjoy people in frocks, then go for it.”
Bonneville went on to state that it is "immensely unlikely" the original cast would return for future projects.

The “Downton Abbey” saga continues in the sequel film “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” which finds the cadre of characters coming up against Hollywood itself when a film production sets up shop at Downton.
After six series on television, creator Julian Fellowes took his upstairs/downstairs story of the goings-on at a sprawling English estate to the big screen with the aptly titled 2019 film “Downton Abbey.” The story continues to unfold in the sequel, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” which takes place in 1928 – nearly two decades after the series first began.
Given the popularity of the show and now film franchise, many may be wondering what kinds of viewing options are available for “Downton Abbey 2” and when or if it might be streaming. Everything you need to know about the new film is outlined below.

Highly anticipated Downton Abbey: A New Era made 1.050 million in Thursday previews that began at 7 p.m. at more than 3,300 theaters. It is Focus Features’ widest ever U.S. release and one that comes with a weight of responsibility as the film to finally catapult older demos back into theaters. Focus Features distribution chief Lisa Bunnell recently promised cinema owners it would. “We have our own superheroes,” she said at CinemaCon.
Based on the smash series created by Julian Fellowes, it’s grossed over 30 million internationally. It premiered in the U.K. and Ireland April 29, launching into the top spot across 746 locations (second-widest release after No Time To Die). It’s certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 Audience score and 83 Critics score. Tracking to a mid-to-low teens opening.
This is the second cinematic outing of the phenomenon that aired for six seasons Stateside on PBS (2011-2020) and reunites the full cast.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.
There are high hopes that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will be the film that can attract older audiences back to movie theaters in earnest for the first time since the pandemic began, and by grossing over 30 million thus far internationally, including strong showings in the UK and Ireland, those hopes may yet be realized.
Independent analysts say the film has a decent chance of reaching 20 million at the domestic box office, while the studio is projecting a more conservative opening in the low to mid-teens. Either would be...

Downton Abbey, more than anything else, boasts a wonderful ensemble cast, with such a vast myriad of different characters, both upstairs and down, that make up this world that has become so globally popular. To mark the release of the eagerly anticipated sequel, titled ‘A New Era’, we had the pleasure a fair few of them, and yet still barely scratched the surface. Yet we were thrilled to spend time with so many, interviewing Tuppence Middleton, Robert-James Collier, Laura Carmichael & Allen Leech, where we discussed shooting in France, whether they have a Downton WhatsApp group, and of course on collaborating with screen icon Maggie Smith.
We then sat down with Hugh Dancy, Michelle Dockery, Raquel Cassidy & Kevin Doyle to speak about the allure of Downton, whether new members of the cast have to face any initiations – and whether fans of the franchise could be in line for a third cinematic outing…...

There’s just something about Downton. A triumphant, globally popular TV series, which has since made the move across to the silver screen in seamless fashion, and in truth, many of us really shouldn’t like it. “Oh that’s not really my sort of thing”, I’ve probably said out loud, once or twice. Yet when watching this sequel, there were moments you could hear me laughing, and moments when, if you looked closely enough, you’ll have seen a few tears streaming down my face as well. It’s testament to good writing, and when you have an accomplished and experienced author on top of things, such as Lord Julian Fellowes, it results in pretty good entertainment. No matter how cynical you may be, you simply can’t help but care.

Ah yes, we have a winner for the best ‘Comfort Food Movie’ of them all. When a trailer for this show popped up at a screening of The Farewell back in August, I heard gasps of excitement from the (slightly older-skewing) audience, as if everyone’s favorite relatives were coming back to town. Loyal fans of the massively popular TV series will be delighted: if you enjoyed it week by week or streaming, you’re going to love this ‘one more time’ get-together with the elegant Crawleys and their engaging domestic staff.

The Crawley family is set to take a tour through China.
Downton Abbey, the film centering on the aristocratic British family, has been scheduled for release in Chinese theaters on December 13.
The period drama continues the story of the Crawleys, and depicts a visit to their English country estate by the king and queen of England.
The film is directed by Michael Engler and written by Julian Fellowes, who also created and wrote the hit television series by the same name.
The series ran for six seasons on ITV and PBS. It became a huge success in China, with DVDs and internet showings with subtitles now required viewing. Audiences in the Communist country are particularly drawn to the depictions of the British upper class.
A report in the UK’s Daily Express noted that there’s a “voracious appetite for British culture” in China because it is seen as a symbol of wealth and success.

Downton Abbey fans only have to wait a few more weeks to find out what the Crawley family has been up to since the television series concluded stateside in 2016.
Ahead of the film version’s September 20 release, some of the team behind the Focus Features drama sat down for interviews for this weekend’s edition of Parade magazine. One of the topics that came up for discussion was the challenge of bringing the expansive cast back together.

The books were previously adapted back in the late 1990s for ITV, with a young Felicity Jones, who went on to be nominated for an Oscar for The Theory of Everything, starring as Ethel Hallow, and then again with a new group of young witches in The New Worst Witch in 2005.
Newcomer Bella Ramsey, a member of the Nottingham-based Television Workshop, stars as Mildred Hubble. Bella will also shortly be making her screen debut as Lyanna Mormont in Season 6 of Game of Thrones.

A fond look back at UK comedy drama Teachers, starring a pre-The Walking Dead and post-This Life Andrew Lincoln...
Fifteen years ago, Andrew Lincoln wasn’t the guy from The Walking Dead. He wasn’t even the creepy guy from Love Actually (the one with the signs. Not any of the other creepy guys). No, he was the guy from This Life that was getting a show all of his own in which to charm the viewing masses. That show was Teachers. And charm us he did.
Set in a secondary school in Bristol, Teachers was good enough to make us actually want to go back to school – or, for those of us who were still at school when it started, to wonder if some of the ridiculous rumours we were making up about the staff shagging each other might actually be true after all.

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

Downton Abbey is finishing up this year after six seasons, but we likely haven't seen the last of the Crawley family. Allen Leech told People Deputy Editor Jd Heyman and his preshow co-host Caroline Modarressey-Tehrani on the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet preshow that the "rumors of a movie" might be true. "Played by an all-American cast," Leech, 34, joked of the potential big-screen reunion. Joined by costars Raquel Cassidy, Phyllis Logan and Kevin Doyle, Leech said, "I think a lot of the cast will be up for coming back for a one-off, so we'll just have to wait and see.

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

The sixth and final season of Downton Abbey premieres on PBS, Sunday, January 3, 2016, at 9:00pm Et/Pt. The Downton Abbey TV series finale airs on PBS on March 6, 2016. After that, what's left for loyal fans? Executive producer Gareth Neame tells TV Insider, “There is the possibility of a Downton Abbey film.” Neame adds, “We don’t have a script yet or any firm plans, but it is certainly something that we’ve been talking about.”
Fans have speculated about a prequel series, but that could necessitate a new cast. Would it really feel like Downton Abbey without at least some of the gifted cast members like Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Rob James-Collier, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, David Robb, Maggie Smith, and Penelope Wilton?

In the Us we have to wait until Sunday, January 3rd, 2016 for it to air as part of the PBS Masterpiece! anthology series. Per Deadline, the UK season six premiere ratings were down, but Downton Abbey still won its premiere night. Since the season has been bought, paid for, and is already in the can, fans don't have to concern ourselves with ratings. Downton Abbey, while not "cancelled" is ending.

With the exception of the final scene, which offers a ray of hope, this is one depressing episode of Downton Abbey. Everyone is mired in individual misery, and some plot points look as if the characters will have to suffer quite a bit more. For a handsome man, Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) had been looking ghastly. His color was bad, and during a servants’ lunch he mentioned he had to visit his dying father. The story sounded mendacious, but who would question this? Later, Baxter (Raquel Cassidy) finds him, sick, and espies his drug paraphernalia. Wretched because he is gay … Continue reading →

After nearly a year away, it’s finally time to revisit the upstairs-downstairs drama of PBS’s “Downton Abbey.”
The new season continues in the Roarin’ 20s, an age of dramatic social and political change – guaranteed to annoy the Earl of Grantham, Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville). Radio will begin permeating homes and it’s bound to hit the Abbey sooner than later, further filling its occupants’ minds with ideas and visuals from far flung places.
Starting in 1924, Season 5 ties up several mysteries that have been haunting the Abbey for years and also settles some romantic storylines. Downstairs, alliances will form...

ITV has announced details of this year's Downton Abbey Christmas Day episode.
The two-hour episode will rejoin the Crawley household in the early autumn of 1924 and sees Alun Armstrong (New Tricks, Braveheart) and BAFTA nominee Jane Lapotaire (Blind Justice, Shooting Fish) join the cast.
Armstrong will play Stowell, the butler of Lady Rose's husband Atticus Aldridge and his family, while Lapotaire stars as the much-discussed Princess Irina, the lost wife of Prince Kuragin (played by Rade Sherbedgia).
The episode sees Rose's father-in-law Lord Sinderby rent out Brancaster Castle for grouse shooting season, inviting the Crawley family for a shooting party. It soon becomes apparent that butler Stowell has a serious axe to grind, while a scandalous secret threatens to ruin the holiday for everybody.

"Downton Abbey" has quite a few new faces gracing the grounds of everyone's favorite British estate in the upcoming fourth season. Zap2it is here with a handy reference guide as a fun sneak peek, but be warned -- small spoilers ahead, so don't keep reading if you want to remain entirely spoiler-free.
Lady Mary's suitors
Pictured above, left, is Tom Cullen as Lord Gillingham (Anthony Foyle) and Julian Ovenden, right, as Charles Blake. With Matthew gone, Mary is of course deeply grieving for her lost love. But that doesn't mean she's destined to be an old maid now. Both of these dashing men will be crossing paths with Mary -- but which path will she be interested in following, if any?
Jack Ross
At left is Gary Carr as Jack Ross, a singer, musician and bandleader for a local jazz ensemble. If you've got eyes, you can see that he's quite the handsome fellow.

Well, that was all a bit of a damp squib. The 'Next Time' teaser at the end of last week's Downton suggested that this week's episode was going to be a ripsnorter. A possible death, a last-minute trip to America, the return of the dastardly Green. Everything was finally coming together.
On paper, it sounded exciting. In reality, Downton's fourth series continues to dawdle and meander at the pace of one Lady Mary's dehydrated pigs.
First things first, Dame Maggie Smith isn't going anywhere. The Dowager had a nasty bout of flu, Violet went a bit cuckoo with fever and the hair and make-up team got to have a giggle, dressing her up like Worzel Gummidge on a bad day. But after a few rounds of gin rummy and some mopping of the brow with a damp flannel from Isobel (Penelope Wilton), she's back on her feet again.

Here's Louisa's take on this week's Downton Abbey...
This review contains spoilers.
Known for letting the odd anachronism slip through Downton’s net (“Screw you losers, I’m outtie” declared Daisy memorably at the village egg raffle in series two), creator Julian Fellowes went so far as to theme this week’s episode around the recently coined term ‘slut-shaming’. Mrs Hughes slut-shamed Edna for interfering with poor Branson, Daisy slut-shamed Ivy for being too fast with Jimmy, and Lady Rosamund slut-shamed Edith for finally getting her end away in her London love pad.
The men of course, remained unchastened for their part in proceedings. Jimmy, with his hedonistic fringe falling so rakishly over his forehead this week it very nearly achieved sentience and its own spin-off, wasn’t at fault for kissing Ivy. Nor was Edith’s beau for causing her to do the...
