Max and Iggor Cavalera, who cofounded the Brazilian metal crew Sepultura but have since left the band, have re-recorded Sepultura’s death-metal–influenced first releases, Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions. The brothers, who have previously recorded as Cavalera Conspiracy, are dubbing their new project simply “Cavalera” and have stylized their name to look like Sepultura’s mid-Eighties logo.
They haven’t yet announced release dates for the records, which feature two previously unreleased songs written around the time of the original releases, but they’re embarking on a tour they...

Sepultura – The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be The Heart
Label: Nuclear Blast
With an entry due in the Guinness Book of Records, perhaps, for the longest album name in history – Sepultura’s 13th studio effort has introduced yet another line-up change into their ranks.
Drummer Eloy Casagrande makes his debut on an album which sees the Brazilian quartet reunited with Ross Robinson, who previously produced ‘Roots’, their last release with former singer and founder Max Cavalera. The results of this partnership are immediately evident in the fresh sound of this craft, with tracks like “Grief” and “Impending Doom” sounding as crushing as anything from ‘Chaos A.D.’
Of course, if a band is only as good as their last album, then this will certainly boost their appeal – what’s best is that the album feels like a Sepultura release, retaining the principles and energy of classic Thrash, while...

Like a venomous snake with its head chopped off, Sepultura has been writhing along for more than a decade minus singer-guitarist Max Cavalera, who acrimoniously quit the pioneering Brazilian metal group in 1997 to form the successful Soulfly. Since then, Sepultura has been in a slow, steady downward spiral. Kairos, the band’s sixth album featuring Cavalera’s barely adequate replacement, Derrick Green, isn’t going to alter that trajectory. But Kairos still has aspirations. Where Sepultura’s last full-length, 2009’s A-Lex, is an ambitiously flawed album based on Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange, Kairos is just a bunch ...

July 26, 2010: Bobby Burns, erstwhile bassist for groove metallers Soulfly, has parted ways with the band, in pursuit of a new musical venture. He reveals the information on his new project, Killer In The Workplace through a video message. The band also features both previous/present members of bands like Stuck Mojo and Primer 55.
He says that he’s been happy to have played for seven years and has co-created a total of four records, not to mention travelled around the world.
He mentions that the departure from the band hasn’t anyway ruined his relationship with Max Cavalera, the iconic frontman of Soulfly. He also.

It's pretty obvious that the Foo Fighters work pretty well together. After seeing a handful of band members come and go during the band's first two recording cycles, the core lineup of Dave Grohl, Chris Shiflett, Taylor Hawkins and Nate Mendel have been together for the better part of a decade and have achieved great success, selling millions of albums, filling stadiums around the world and even headlining the White House.
But the quartet seems to spend an awful lot of time away from each other. Today marks the release of Shiflett's first solo album (which he recorded as Chris Shiflett and the Dead Peasants), which is quite the departure for the former axe man for San Francisco punk band No Use For a Name. Rather than the buzzsaw riffs that have made the Foo Fighters huge, Shiflett's album errs more on the side of the Foos' quieter material, and...

In the spirit of our March Madness competition, we pit rock bands against each other -- fans decide who wins!
By Kyle Anderson and James Montgomery

Every four years, the international community comes together to decide which nation has the most dominant soccer team (or football team, provided that you live anywhere but the United States). The 2010 FIFA World Cup is upon us, and the first matches start in earnest on Friday.
Coincidentally, that's also the day that will see the launch of the 2010 MTV World Cup of Rock tournament. Just as we did with our very popular Musical March Madness matchup, we've taken a huge sporting event and translated it to the music world. And once again, it's up to you the readers to decide which country rocks hardest and best.
The 16 countries that qualified for the World Cup of Rock are grouped into...

Metal fans who favor explosive riffage of the most sinister sort have much love for Brazilian virtuoso Max Cavalera, who first staked his claim in the genre over 20 years ago as one of the core members of landmark band Sepultura, before moving on to form or contribute to numerous other outfits – including the new ultra-thrash unit Cavalera Conspiracy, with his brother Igor on skins. But many of us have held a special fondness for Max's higher profile project Soulfly – a prolific group that managed to blast out seven albums in the dozen-plus years since its inception. While based mainly on a titanium skeleton of chug-a-riffic thrash, there's an experimental spirit at work within each Soulfly album: exotic...

Last year we teased you a little bit about the upcoming epic album Omen from Brazilian metal legend Max Cavalera's celebrated metal band Soulfly – and that long wait is nearly over. The band just sprang a big list of stats for the special-edition release of the CD, which is slated to drop in less than two months. Get a look at the cover art, track highlights and other info about both versions after the jump! Containing songs like Rise of the Fallen (featuring Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato), Bloodbath & Beyond, Lethal Injection (with Prong frontman Tommy Victor), Jeffrey Dahmer and Off With Their Heads, the band's seventh full-length release is slated for May 25th, and will be available in an...

Sepultura without the Cavalera brothers has been a tough sell for many despite the noble efforts of Andreas Kisser, Paolo, Jr., Derrick Green and current drummer John Dolabella. Fortunately for Kisser, his name commands respect not only in Sepultura, but also his side projects Sexoturica, Asesino and now Hail! the latter also featuring Tim “Ripper” Owens, Paul Bostaph and David Ellefson.
All of this leads the insanely busy Kisser to issue his debut solo project, a double album subdivided between electric and acoustic explorations, Hubris I & II. Heavy in one breath, quixotic and introspective in another, Andreas Kisser gives air to the more creative cages of his headspace with Hubris I & II. Though his sophisticated venture at times goes off on tangents, most of the journey is absorbing.
Other than “Eu Humano” and “The Forum” from Hubris I plus “Page” from Hubris II, Kisser strays as far away from Sepultura as he possibly can.

In the vast ocean of metal, you’d be hard-pressed to find a musician as respected as Max Cavalera. After spending the better half of two decades as the frontman of Sepultura, the Brazilian guitarist/vocalist has been working almost non-stop since 1997 with his current band, Soulfly in addition to side projects including the Cavalera Conspiracy, reuniting with his brother Igor, former drummer of Sepultura.
With Soulfly set to embark on a U.S. tour later this month, the often-elusive Cavalera took time out from tour prep for a phone interview with Fangoria Musick to talk music, his love of horror (Coffin Joe!), and what the future holds for the band.
James Zahn/Fangoria: So you’re getting geared up for another tour here pretty soon.
Max Cavalera: Yep, we’re going back out on the road in a little more than two weeks.
Zahn: There was talk that...

It’s always exciting when you’re awarded the chance to speak with someone you genuinely admire and whose music or film has affected you in some way. With songs titles like “Crystal Lake” and “Zombies Are Good for Your Health,” I always knew Poison the Well, or at least singer Jeffrey Moreira had some appreciation for our beloved genre. That connection along with my own love for terror flicks and the band’s extreme honest and genuine sound built them into an outfit I would always follow and eagerly await new music from. My hunch was solidified on their DVD, Tear From The Road, in which the front man, amidst bellowing out ferocious roars, was sporting a shirt displaying the poster for the slasher classic, Maniac.

It's that time of year again, when everyone rolls out their "Top 10" lists, the "Best and Worsts", and other variations on what boils down to individual opinions on what they loved or loathed throughout the previous 365 days. Not big on doing a numeric list, here's some of my favorite Musick releases for 2008 in no particular order.
Between The Buried And Me - "Colors Live"
Release Date: 10/14/2008
Label: Victory Records
Format: DVD/CD
You've got to respect a band like Between the Buried and Me for doing what they do, and carving a niche far outside the norm. Seamlessly mixing hardcore, death metal, and melodic pop with the ability to turn on a dime, Btbam is by far one of the most polished acts currently skirting the mainstream. Their DVD set for Colors is beautifully shot, has a fantastic audio mix, and has spent more time in my player this year than almost anything else.
