David Fincher’s new film, The Killer, has now been released, and many are glowing about its slick filmmaking. Michael Fassbender stars as a contract killer who is particular in his ways and the intricate procedure in which he goes about his job. While many may feel the plot itself is simplistic, the Netflix film features Fincher’s distinct style. In a review from our own Chris Bumbray, he expresses, “As usual for a Fincher movie, The Killer is impeccably crafted, running a lean two hours and sporting Fincher’s signature cold, dark look via Dp Erik Messerschmidt. The score by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor is more sparse than usual, and the sound design is intricate enough that if you get a chance to see this theatrically, you should.”
Among the fans of the film, director Guillermo Del Toro is someone in particular who the movie really won over.

David Fincher’s new film The Killer debuted to mixed reactions when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year. Then, in the review from our own Chris Bumbray, he says it may not be one of Fincher’s best, it’s still calculated and expertly assembled as only Fincher can do. Netflix has now unveiled the newest trailer for the streamer’s original film starring Michael Fassbender. In this trailer, we get slightly more details on the plot, but we are totally immersed Fassbender’s assassin thought process with his inner monologue guiding us through the preview.
The official logline from Netflix reads,
“After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.”
The film sports a cast with acting talents such as Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton. The screenplay is written by Andrew Kevin Walker.

Michael Fassbender is a killer with a meditative streak.
The actor leads David Fincher’s drama “The Killer” as an assassin who begins to have a psychological crisis in a world with no moral compass.
The official synopsis reads: After a fateful near miss, an assassin battles his employers — and himself — on an international hunt for retribution he insists isn’t personal. Solitary, cold, methodical, and unencumbered by scruples or regrets, a killer waits in the shadows, watching for his next target. Yet, the longer he waits, the more he thinks he’s losing his mind, if not his cool.
The Netflix film is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Alexis Nolent Aka Matz, which “Se7en” screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker adapted for the screen. Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, and Sophie Charlotte also star. Ceán Chaffin produces.

David Fincher is one of the most acclaimed and influential filmmakers of our time, but he has not always received a warm reception from critics and audiences. In fact, one of his most celebrated films, “Fight Club”, was booed and denounced as fascist when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1999. However, Fincher returned to Venice in 2023 with his latest film, “The Killer”, and received a very different reaction: a five-minute standing ovation.
“The Killer” is a Netflix adaptation of a graphic novel by Matz and Luc Jacamon, starring Michael Fassbender as a cold-blooded assassin who becomes a target himself. The film is a stylish and violent thriller that showcases Fincher’s mastery of visual storytelling and dark humor. The film was screened out of competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival, where it received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Netflix has just released the manic trailer for David Fincher’s new dark tale from the crime underworld that has Michael Fassbender losing himself in a psychosis. The Killer is the new effort from Fincher and his Seven screenwriter, Andrew Kevin Walker. Yesterday, the one-sheet poster for the film was released and depicted a stylized, painted look of Michael Fassbender’s character that’s indicative of a retro 70’s movie poster or novel. Today, the official trailer has been released by the streaming service.
The official logline from Netflix reads,
“After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.” The trailer brings the same chaotic energy that the teaser trailer for Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from 2011 hit unsuspecting audiences with. Based on the French graphic novel of the same name by writer Alexis Nolent (a.k.a. Matz) and illustrator Luc Jacamon, with a screenplay by frequent Fincher collaborator Andrew Kevin Walker (“Seven”), the movie follows an assassin (Fassbender) who, after a near-fatal miss, “battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.” Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard and Sophie Charlotte star alongside Fassbender.

Director David Fincher has reunited with his Seven screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker for a new noir thriller called The Killer, which is expected to be released through the Netflix streaming service sometime in 2023. Details on The Killer are being kept tightly under wraps – but the crew of star Michael Fassbender’s show Road to Le Mans, which chronicles the actor’s “journey from novice racer to Le Mans competitor” were able to capture some behind the scenes footage and feature it in an episode of the series.
Amidst footage of Fassbender shooting scenes of his character riding various vehicles in front of LED backdrops, the actor says (with thanks to The Film Stage for the transcription): “It felt really good to go back to work. The film that I did before that was just before lockdown, but that was 2019, so I was definitely ready to go back to work.

Most of David Fincher's films enter a tempest upon release, as critics and moviegoers tussle over whether his noir-influenced visual style supports whatever story he's telling (it usually does). His 1997 effort "The Game" is one that divides Fincher fans, with some ranking it below newer works like the 2020 Tinseltown drama "Mank" despite the critical praise the film enjoyed upon release from luminaries like Roger Ebert.
The story of "The Game" follows Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas), the man who has everything. A wealthy, Scrooge-esque investment banker, Van Orton meets up with his estranged brother (Sean Penn) who gives him an unorthodox, one-of-a-kind birthday gift: a chance to play a mysterious "life-changing" game that seems to have no boundaries and, Van Orton learns, could endanger his life.

David Fincher took a six-year film hiatus between “Gone Girl” (2014) and “Mank” (2020), but such a long break won’t be happening in between “Mank” and the director’s upcoming assassin movie “The Killer.” As first reported by El Diario Vasco, Fincher is eyeing to begin production on “The Killer” in Paris this November. The locale makes sense, given Fincher was spotted in Paris in late May at a lunch with his “Mank” actress Lily Collins (who is in Paris filming the second season of Netflix’s “Emily in Paris”). To make “The Killer” more exciting, Fincher is reuniting with his Oscar-winning “Mank” cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt for his new film.
News first broke in February that Fincher would follow “Mank” with “The Killer,” an adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s graphic novel series of the same name. Andrew Kevin Walker, the screenwriter who worked with Fincher on his serial killer drama “Seven,...

At the 93rd Academy Awards, Mank‘s Erik Messerschmidt took home his first Oscar for Best Cinematography.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked director David Fincher “for creating an environment where we could do our best work,” expressing gratitude for the fact that he “got to go home and feel like I gave it my all, every night.”
He then thanked producer Ceán Chaffin for her “endless support,” screenwriter Eric Roth for his “guidance,” actors Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman and their fellow cast members “for hitting [their] marks,” as well as his collaborators in the camera department. “This really belongs to an extraordinary crew who I could not do anything without,” he said. “And thank you to my beautiful wife Naiara, who tolerates this crazy business and helped me get through this movie.”
While Messerschmidt had strong competition tonight in Nomadland‘s Joshua James Richards, he was also a top contender throughout awards season.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. It’s been a year like no other. Actually, make that two years like no other, since eligibility in the unusual 14-month Oscar calendar was extended by two months until February 28, 2021. This will be the first Academy Awards since the sixth edition, listed as 1932-33, that will have included one year and part of the other, and this year’s awards will technically be categorized as 2020-21. While many theaters remained closed, streamers like Netflix and Amazon became more prominent than ever — a sea change that even the cinema-centric Academy had to acknowledge by making films automatically eligible even if they first debuted on a streamer, at least for this year.
Still, as the nominations showed, and my predictions will support, the traditional studios, whether alone or with the help of their specialty divisions, still look to triumph once the history of this weird season finally is written. An earlier...

A few minutes ago, the Producers Guild Awards concluded, and with that, we can now say with a fair amount of certainty that Nomadland is in the driver’s seat for Best Picture. The Academy Awards could still potentially throw a curveball, but the odds don’t favor that. Rather, it sure seems like this movie is the Oscar pick. Sit tight for the rest of the guilds to chime in, but if you had to pick a film to repeat with the Academy, Nomadland is the one, especially after PGA… Here’s all of the winners from the Producers Guild Awards: Darryl F. The Producers Guild of America Awards awarded Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” with their top prize, one of the key indicators for the Academy Awards, particularly the best picture category. Edging out its closest competitors including Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” this might just end any questions about whether or not the moving drama is running away with the Oscars’ big prize.
All the acceptance speeches were pre-recorded with “Nomadland” giving a more produced, glitzier presentation than what we’ve seen at other award shows.
It should be noted that last year’s “1917” from Sam Mendes lost the Oscar after wins from PGA and DGA to “Parasite,” which only had the coveted SAG cast ensemble prize under its belt. Coincidentally, “Nomadland” is not nominated at SAG in their top category, leaving an opening for...

“Nomadland” look home the top film prize at the 2021 Producers Guild Awards Wednesday, bringing it closer to a Best Picture win. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize has historically been a strong indicator of which film will will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, the PGA winner has matched up with the top Oscar 21 out of 31 times. It happened in 2018 with “Green Book,” but not last year: “1917” won at the 2020 PGAs, but the Academy Award for Best Picture went to “Parasite.”
This year, 10 movies competed for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures (see the full list of nominees and winners below). Seven 2021 PGA nominees for the top prize are also 2021 Oscar Best Picture nominees: “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound Of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

“Nomadland” has been named the best produced film of 202o by the Producers Guild of America, giving it yet another boost in an Oscar race where it was already considered the favorite.
In a category where Chloé Zhao’s understated travelogue was facing off against seven other Oscar nominees, the Producers Guild provided a key indicator that the film has the kind of strength within the industry that it already showed with critics. In doing so, it took away the chance that rivals like “Promising Young Woman,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Minari had to seize momentum at a crucial moment in awards season.
The film has now picked up a formidable array of awards, including wins at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and the Gotham Awards.

The Producers Guild of America Awards were handed out during a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, March 24. Throughout their 31-year history, the PGA has proven to be one of the most successful Oscar bellwethers around. A whopping 21 of their picks have gone onto win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. That success rate flows from the fact that both the guild and the academy use the same voting system – the preferential ballot – to determine a winner. Scroll down for the 2021 Producers Guild of America Awards winners list.
This year, seven out of the 10 PGA contenders earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture: “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” The eighth Best Picture Oscar nominee – “The Father” – was missing from the PGA lineup, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night in Miami” rounding out the guild’s top 10 list.

The Oscars have unveiled the 2021 nominations, and it was a historic group that closes the chapter of one of the hardest years for cinema.
After a year in which the Academy announced its divisive inclusion and representation standards, members stepped up to the plate, recognizing the most people of color in the acting categories in history with nine nods. There’s wonderful representation in almost every category, and while there’s still work to do, this is a step in the right direction and the Academy should be applauded for its efforts.
In a year dubbed “The Year of the Woman,” it’s poetic to see (in theory) that the only two films that can win best picture, based on Oscar statistical history, are “Nomadland” and “Promising Young Woman,” considering where they landed nominations.
Let’s look through the first initial thoughts on the nominees and predicted winners.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS’s David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline’s scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.
The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy’s efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.

If you’re reading this the day after our issue hits newsstands, the Oscar voting period is now closed. So where does it all stand?
The Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards gave their top prize to Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” which solidified its front-runner status. Jason Woliner’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” received boosts from winning the Globes’ best picture comedy prize and nabbing a surprise Producers Guild of America nomination. Still, it’ll be tricky to see the film picking up the broad support needed to land a nom in the Academy’s top category. It does, however, help star Maria Bakalova, who has become a darling of this year’s quarantine campaign trail.

The 2021 Oscar race for Best Picture comes into clearer focus with the announcement of the nominees for the 32nd Producers Guild of America Awards. More often than not, the PGA award-winner is the same as the eventual winner of the Best Picture Oscar. But that’s not always the case, as it was when Sam Mendes’ “1917” won the PGA last year over “Parasite,” although Bong Joon Ho’s eventual Oscar winner for Best Picture did receive a PGA nomination.
Usually the most likely to vie for the Best Picture Oscar are movies landing both SAG Ensemble and PGA nominations. This year that includes two dramas from Netflix, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s courtroom drama, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Sundance’s Korean language prize-winner “Minari” (A24), and “One Night in Miami” (Amazon).

Indie studios and streamers dominated the nominations for the 32nd annual Producers Guild of Awards, which were announced on Monday by the Producers Guild of America.
Netflix and Amazon each landed three films on the list of 10, with Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” making the list along with Amazon’ “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “Sound of Metal.”

After partnering with Netflix for his acclaimed biopic “Mank,” director David Fincher has re-teamed with the streaming service for his next feature film, “The Killer.”
Michael Fassbender is in talks to star in the assassin drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline. However, Netflix and representatives for Fassbender declined to confirm. Andrew Kevin Walker, who has collaborated with Fincher on “Se7en,” “Fight Club” and “The Game,” is writing the script.
“The Killer” centers on a cold-blooded assassin who begins to develop a conscience, causing him to emotionally crack. The story is based on a graphic novel by Alexis Nolent.
Ceán Chaffin will serve as producer.
In November, Fincher signed a four-year film deal with Netflix. “Mank,” a black-and-white drama that chronicles screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz’s efforts to finish the script for the Orson Welles classic “Citizen Kane,” was released late last year and has been widely considered an Oscars frontrunner.

David Fincher is setting up his next Netflix original movie in the form of “The Killer,” an adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s graphic novel series of the same name. Deadline first reported the news. Andrew Kevin Walker, the screenwriter who worked with Fincher on his serial killer drama “Seven,” is penning the adaptation. Michael Fassbender is circling the lead role in what would be his first collaboration with the popular filmmaker.
Per Deadline: “The graphic novel series followed a cold-blooded assassin who begins to have a psychological crisis in a world with no moral compass.” The Hollywood Reporter adds that Fassbender “would star as an assassin who begins to psychologically crack as he develops a conscience, even as his clients continue to demand his skills.”
That Fincher is turning towards filming “The Killer” will put an end to a passion project that has been percolating for well over a decade.

Following his critically acclaimed work directing Mank, David Fincher looks to have found his next project returning to a genre he knows well. Sources tell Deadline Fincher is currently developing an adaptation of the Alexis Nolent’s The Killer graphic novel series, re-teaming with Seven screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, who will adapt. While unconfirmed, sources also say Michael Fassbender is in talks to star in the pic. Netflix would not comment on Fassbender’s involvement.
Ceán Chaffin will serve as producer.
The series followed a cold-blooded assassin who begins to have psychological crisis in a world with no moral compass. It is still unknown how Fincher and Walker would tackle this adaptation but the stylistic noir themes that run throughout the series seem like a perfect project to reunite the two 25 years after their own classic noir tale premiered.
