Meenakshi Sundareshwar(Netflix)
Starring Abhimanyu Dassani, Sanya Malhotra
Directed by Vivek Soni
This could have been a lovely story of a newly-married couple groping its way through the new experience, finding themselves stranded in the journey and then coming back together. Initially Meenakshi Sundareshwar reminded me of Basu Chatterjee’s Piya Ka Ghar where the problem faced by the newlyweds was quite simple: privacy.
This one goes for more. In trying to wind its way through the newly weds’ adjustment problems, the plot ties itself up into knots. Soon we are watching a film about a Tamilian couple from Madurai who are incompatible because… ummm.. she loves Rajinikant (first day first show) and he hates movies(they put him to sleep). Okay, too minor a reason for marital discord? Then try this: he has to move to Bengaluru for a job leaving his new bride behind with his family(no ogres there,...

Hum Do Hamare Do(Disney-Hotstar)
Starring Ratna Pathak Shah, Paresh Rawail, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Not even the wonderful Ratna Pathak Shah and Paresh Rawal could rescue this dreary rom-com from sinking so low into the abyss that it’s hard to find one single moment of joy from the mirthless mess.
On the premise level it sounds promising. Rajkummar Rao is Dhruv ,an orphan craving for a, awww, family. Ever-bubbly Kriti Sanon , the new-age Preity Zinta, craves for a Bunty with a large heart and a larger family. So what does Dhruv do? He hires two long-in-love estranged people Purushottam(Rawal) and Deepti(Pathak) to play his parents.
There is an unintentional tribute to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Golmaal here. In that film Amol Palekar(who was to middle-of-the-road cinema in the 1970s what Rajkummar Rao is now to the romcom industry) had hired Ratna Pathak Shah’s mother...

Chehre
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Emraan Hashmi, Annu Kapoor, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Raghuveer Yadav, Rhea Chakraborty, Crystal d’Souza
Directed by Rumi Jaffrey
A snow blizzard drives the wizard of awe far beyond the precincts of the plot, into a tirade against all atrocities and crimes committed against women. He speaks about Nirbhaya and acid attacks, women being made to relive the trauma of rape each time they attend a court hearing. He speaks. Everyone on the screen and in the audience, listens.
“There is no nyay only faisla,” the Bachchan baritone boomed across the big screen as I sat listening and watching, wondering, are there no fulltops to this actor’s aspirations?
Chehre is a chamber-piece which echoes Agatha Christie’s 12 Little Indians and Basu Chatterjee’s Ek Ruka Hua Faisla in that the concept of justice is discussed within the confines of the four walls.

Kaagaz movie review
What to say about a movie that brings great writers like Harishankar Parsai, Sharad Joshi, actors like Sanjeev Kumar and filmmakers like Basu Chatterjee alive for those 2+ hours. Satish Kaushik’s Kaagaz starring Pankaj Tripathi in the lead does that.
Based on the real-life story of Bihari Lal aka Lal Bihari Mritak, a farmer activist and a dead man between 1975 and 1994. Pankaj...

The world needs a little bit of humor and some bone tickling comedies to survive the grimness of 2020. Keeping that in mind, Zee Studios released Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari. With Diljit Dosanjh wowing the audience with some crackling punchlines, and Fatima Sana Shaikh ready to be seen in a drastically different avatar, Manoj Bajpayee, who plays a wedding detective making his living out of spying on prospective grooms. The actor dons multiple looks in the trailer as he disguises himself while on the job.
Bajpayee plays Madhu Mangal Rane with flair and steadfast conviction. Battling him out is his equally worthy opponent, Suraj Singh Dhillon played affably by Diljit. Fatima plays a Marathi mulgi from Bombay, with a rebellious streak, whose family wants to see her settled.
Set in 1995 Bombay, the director has captured the city in all its glory. Every detail of the era is beautifully woven into the trailer,...

Scam 1992 The Harshad Mehta Story
Starring Pratik Gandhi, Sharib Hashmi, Shreya Dhanwanthary, Hemant Kher
Directed by Hansal Mehta
There is a certain desperate grace in the Indian workingclass’ existence that most filmmakers are unable to capture. Even Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee where seldom able to capture that quality of sublimity in the squalor.
Hansal Mehta’s narrative, based on the infamous Harshad Mehta Dalaal Street scam, is not afraid to get its feet wet in the mud. He looks at his Gujarati characters with a certain respect and admiration without excessively edifying them. The journey from the cramped two-room apartment to the sprawling glass-encased affluence of Harshad Mehta and his family is delineated with vigorous authenticity.
That the director is a Gujarati and his leading man too is a Gujarati goes along way into constrictive an energetic yet calm edifice of middleclass ambitions and how far an individual is...

Sanjay Mishra is an actor who never fails to surprise. His gallery of performances ranges from buffoonery (Golmaal) to sheer brilliance (Ankhen Dekhi). There is nothing this maverick performer can’t do.
His new film Kaamyaab features Sanjay as a ‘character actor’ of Hindi cinema on a very strange mission.
“My character Sudheer is a character actor like Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor or Lalita Pawar, so brilliant that anyone can take him from granted as and how they like. Sudheer has already done 499 films in his career. He is retired and aimless when suddenly something happens, and he wants to do that one last film which would round off his career. He wants to be remembered as the only actor who has done 500 films,” says Sanjay Mishra.

Girish Karnad was one of the true intellectuals of post Independent India. A polyglot, playwright, actor, film maker, aesthete, scholar, teacher, critic and a humanist Girish was never a close friend but someone whom I always looked forward to meeting.
We came to know each other around 1972 through several common friends like Shyam Benegal, Basu Chatterjee, Satyadev Dubey and B.V. Karanth though I was acquainted with his work from the mid-sixties. His plays 'Yayati' (1961), 'Tughlaq' (1964), 'Hayavadana' (1972) and 'Nagamandala' (1988) rank among the finest Indian plays post-Independence.
A Rhodes scholar, Girish interestingly started by reading Mathematics in college. He was to become a scholar in history, literature, cinema and stagecraft. He was steeped in Indian tradition and had a deep study of our mythology, specially the Mahabharata.
He has won practically every award which an artiste in India can aspire for - Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sahitya Akademi Award, Kalidas Samman, Jnanpith Award,...

Blackmail
Starring Irrfan Khan, Kriti Kulhari, Arunodoy Singh, Divya Dutta, Praduman Singh, Anuja Sathe, Omi Vaidya
Directed by Abhinay Deo
If I didn’t know about Irrfan’s health issue I’d still be shaken by his hangdog unenthusiastic expression as he plods through his chosen life of a born loser in this savagely funny satire on adultery and blackmail.
In the strikingly shot (by cinematographer Jay Oza) opening we see Irrfan struggling to stay afloat through his office hours, fighting shy of going home because the spark has gone from his marriage and wife who watches cheesy song sequences on television to while away her time. Actually it was never there, the spark I mean. In a wedding song that comes on at the end of the film taken from Irrfan’s Dev’s marriage to Reena (Kirti Kulhari) seven years earlier, we see how mismatched and ill-at-ease the couple was.

Tiwari’s Love per Square Foot, released on Netflix and is to be released in theatres in April, falls in the space of those bitter-sweet dramas about the housing space that we saw in the 1970s.
You know, Basu Chatterjee Piya Ka Ghar, Bhim Sain’s Garonda, Rajinder Singh Bedi’s Dastak. This is Basu Chatterjee’s universe unplugged, updated and remixed, of train commuters, auto riders and bus travelers falling in love on the road.
With lot of sex, rather, sexy suggestions of sex, thrown in. In one sequence when Vicky Kaushal’s Sanjay Chaturvedi is close-dancing Angira Dhar’s Karina...

Tumhari Sulu
Starring Vidya Balan, Manav Kaul, Neha Dhupia, Vijay Mourya
Directed by Suresh Triveni
One extra star in this flawed and often loosely structured film for Vidya Balan’s extraordinarily empathetic performance as a middleclass housewife, okay homemaker, with serious concentration issues.
You see, our Sulochana, aka Sulu can’t focus on any one thing (but then this film can’t focus on the issue at hand either) not even her growing son who, as it turns out, becomes conveniently problematic as the narrative progresses. A scene later in the film in the principal’s office of Sulu’s son’s school made me cringe in the way similar sequences of reprimanded parents never made me feel in English Vinglish or Hindi Medium.
The progress report of Sulu’s life runs in direct proportion to the storyteller’s(feeble) ability to keep the momentum alive.

Bareilly Ki Barfi
Starring Ayushmann Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Directed by Ashiwini Iyer Tiwari
Early in the plot, we are told that the film’s heroine Bitti is no Sati Savitri. Thank God for small town mercies! In fact she adheres to another kind of stereotyping that Hindi cinema has lately embraced. You know, the small town girl who is hip and happy, sassy and sexy, rides two-wheelers and smokes whenever she can get her hands on a cancer stick, and when a prospective groom asks her if she is a virgin Bitti retorts, “No I am not… are you?”
Ah, long live the virgin bride.
Bitti is from the same feisty school of small-town rebellion as Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu and Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. In fact, what Bitti thinks to be streaks of rebellion (breakdancing, watching angrezi films,...

Toilet : Ek Prem Katha
Starring Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Divyendu Sharma, Sudhir Pande & Anupam Kher
Directed by Shree Narayan Singh
There is a point of no return in the plot when we the audience become so immersed in the protagonist’s crusade for a better tomorrow that we are cheering and stomping our feet in encouragement for that bright sunshine-drenched tomorrow of which Sahir Ladhianvi dreamt in Pyasa and Phir Subah Hogi.
Our protagonist Madhav’s battle is not really reformatory in the way the great heroes of our times meant it to be. In Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Satyakam when the protagonist Dharmendra marries the rape victim he does it with the least amount of self-congratulations. In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Akshay Kumar’s mission to build a toilet for his wife is compared with Shah Jahan building the Taj Mahal for his wife.

Starring Swara Bhaskar, Ratna Pathak Shah, Pankaj Tripathy, Riya Shukla
Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari
For my money time and attention, Swara Bhaskar is the real Tanu, whether Manu likes it or not. And I keep telling Aanand Rai, the man who directed Tanu Weds Manu and who has so wisely invested in co-producing this week’s gem of a film on a mother’s yearning to see her daughter excel. Swara’s spontaneous, unrehearsed, seemingly uncomplicated interpretations of the most layered emotions is not only exemplary, it is a one-woman acting school on how not to like you are….well, acting.

Satirizing terrorism is as tricky as making molar surgery mirthful. Abhishek Sharma did it once in Tere Bin Laden, then fell flat on his farce with a raunchy sexed-up version of Basu Chatterjee’s Shaukeen. So Sharma is back doing what he thinks he is best at.
Generating titters out of terrorism.
And though it has its ha-hee-hee-ho-ho moments, it is not quite the….errr… blast that it promises to be, mainly because the characters behave as though they are in a stand-up comedy act where every actor must…well, act. So everyone is acting all the time…sometimes double-acting because some of the pointedly parodic people, like Sikandar Kher who plays – don’t laugh – a CIA agent masquerading as a Bollywood film producer – lead double lives, alas, failing to generate double laughter.
Farce is clearly not young Kher’s forte, though what is his forte nobody knows.

We all know Anuj Sachdeva, who has appeared in many popular soaps like Sabki Laadli Bebo, Phir Subah Hogi, Chhanchhan and Itti Si Khushi, will be seen playing the protagonist Jd, in the forthcoming romantic comedy film - Love Shagun. However, not many know that, Anuj's point of reference to prepare for his role was none other than the veteran actor - Amol Palekar.
Interestingly, when Jd's role was offered to Anuj, he was asked to refer to Amol Palekar's character from Basu Chatterjee's classic film Choti Si Baat. In the film, Palekar plays a simpleton and wears chequered shirts and pleated pants. He also has a tough time talking to women and ultimately when he meets the love of his life, he is not able to propose to her. 2014 gave many gems to adore like Queen, Finding Fanny and Haider, but for every good film there’s a Humshakals, It’s Entertainment and Action Jackson. With every editorial on the new changes in Bollywood, there’s the inexplicable popularity of duds that have Ajay Devgn loudly zipping up his trousers or Saif running around London like a dog. It’s baffling that films like Bang Bang or Kick work, but the modest failure of Humshakals had us filled with glee, maybe next year the audiences will finally give up on Sajid Khan. This year’s Razzies features some repeat offenders (looking at you Jackky!) and some newbies who should know better.

It seems international superstar Akshay Kumar’s fate has always been written in the stars – Akshay has recently revealed that he got his big break in the film industry after missing a flight to a modelling assignment, after he thought the flight was at 6pm when it was in fact, at 6am.
A distraught Akshay was walking past Nataraj Studios in tears after missing his flight and was quickly noticed by a make-up artist who saw some pictures Akshay was carrying of himself. The make-up artist called him inside the studios, handed Akshay a cheque for five thousand rupees and exclaimed “Son. I want to make a film with you” – and as the say, the rest is history.

In the 1970s, part of the Golden Era of film music, one of Bollywood's most prolific filmmakers Basu Chatterjee would often force his songs into the background. Immortal melodies like 'Rajanigandha Phool Tumhare' (Rajnigandha), 'Na Jaane Kyon Hota Hai Yun Zindagi Je Saath' (Chotisi Baat), 'Yeh Din Kya Aaye Lage Phool Hanse' (Chotisi Baat), 'Yeh Jeevan Hai Iss Jeevan Ka Yehi Hai Rang-Roop' (Piya Ka Ghar), Lata Mangeshkar's version of the tandem 'Rimjim Gire Saawan' (Manzil) and 'Tere Bin Kaise Din Beete Sajna' (Priyatama) were relegated to the background in Basu Chatterjee's films. Says a very distinguished director, "Basu da was a great director. But he just didn't know how to use those beautiful songs. He would put them in the background because he was uncomfortable with lip-sync numbers." A lot of progressive directors today feel the same way as Basu Chatterjee. Shoojit Sircar and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra...

Dildaar and yaaron ka yaar is how Yo Yo Honey Singh likes to describe himself. He proved it with his action recently when he flew back from his current American tour for some very special recordings in the new Akshay Kumar film Shaukeen. Apparently Akshay who has collaborated repeatedly with Yo Yo in the past requested the rapper-performer for one special number in the Abhishek Sharma directed remake of Basu Chatterjee's Shaukeen which pairs Akshay with Lisa Haydon. Yo Yo insisted on doing three songs instead of one. Says Honey Singh, "Main aisa hi hoon. Anything for a friend. And there are two stars in Bollywood for whom I'd do anything. Akshay Paaji and Shah Rukh Bhai are like my brothers. When Akshay Paaji requested me to do one song, I told him, 'Ek kyun, teen le lo.' I feel my tuning with Akshay Paaji is such that...

When filmmaker Nikhil Advani met the Showman Subhash Ghai on Saturday to narrate his interpretation of Ghai's 1983 blockbuster Hero, Nikhil never imagined Ghai would respond so warmly to the new-age Hero. Apparently, Nikhil has completely re-written Hero, giving a new-age twist to every character and situation in the original. Says a source close to the project, "Salman Khan who produces the Hero remake wanted every character and situation from the original to be changed. While Jackie Shroff was a soft-hearted goonda in Ghai's Hero, Sooraj Pancholi would be a hardened criminal in the remake. The entire original script has been dismantled and deconstructed by Nikhil Advani and his co-writer Umesh Bist. Nikhil went to Ghai as a gesture of respect for the creator of the original material. He didn't expect his re-mixed Hero would get such a thumping approval from Subhashji." Normally, remakes leave the original directors very pissed off.

Even as the remake of Shaukeen is being planned with Tigmanshu Dhulia scripting and Abhishek (Tere Bin Laden) Sharma directing the project, news comes that another Basu Chatterjee film, the 1979 comedy Baaton Baaton Mein featuring Amol Palekar and Tina Munim is all set to be directed by Shivum Nair Shivum has earlier directed Abhay Deol and Soha Ali Khan in the drama Ahista Ahista in 2006. Abhay, seen by many filmmakers as the new-age Amol Palekar is expected to step into Palekar's part while Yami Gautam is the replacement for Tina Munim in the Baaton Baaton Mein remake. Confirming these developments, producer Aditya Bhatia says, "Yes, we're doing a remake of Baaton Baaton Mein. The details are now being worked out." While admitting that Abhay Deol and Yami Gautam are the likely replacement actors in the remake Bhatia says, "We're still in the process of firming everything in." Even before the remake of Basu Chatterjee's 1982 film Shaukeen could go on floor, the film seems to have hit rock bottom. Rumi Jaffrey, who was supposed to direct the film, has opted out of it.
Apparently, the reason for the sudden exit is said to be date clashes. Rumi, who was pretty kicked about the project revealed that the film got delayed to January instead of October and that, he had other commitments to fulfill. The writer-director also expressed his unhappiness over his exit from the remake and hopes that despite his absence, the film proves successful.
While the original starred Mithun Chakraborty and Rati Agnihotri, this one will have Akshay Kumar and Nargis Fakri reprising their roles.
