While “Love in Taipei” promises transportive and transformative escapades with its adaptation of Abigail Hing Wen’s novel “Loveboat, Taipei,” the story’s core strengths are undervalued in the translation from book to screen. This Paramount Plus feature, centered on a young woman embarking on a life-changing overseas journey, only pays lip service to the struggle of a first-generation Asian-American caught between two worlds. Instead, it places more emphasis on her romantic entanglements with two young men who all too often motivate her foundational change. Director Arvin Chen cleverly brings us into her psyche through whimsical aesthetic techniques and fantastical asides, but doesn’t make her emotions palpable enough to touch our hearts.
Eighteen-year-old Ever Wong (Ashley Liao) has always felt like an outsider in her tiny suburban town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, being one of only three Asian-American students in her predominantly white school. Her parents (Jacko Chiang and...

The current wave of Hong Kong nostalgia continues with “Chasing the Dragon II: Wild Wild Bunch,” an entertaining if superficial and heavily fictionalized glimpse into the final days of notorious 1990s kidnapper Cheung Tze-keung, aka “Big Spender” and renamed Logan Long here. Starring dependable veteran Tony Leung Ka-fai as the master crook and Louis Koo (Johnnie To’s “Drug War”) as an undercover cop tasked with taking him down, this old-school entry co-directed by Jason Kwan and prolific Hong Kong mainstay Wong Jing moves along briskly but never gets beneath the skin of its intriguing characters. Connected solely by its retro crime theme to the 2018 Kwan-Wong hit “Chasing the Dragon,” “Bunch” should do solid business when it opens in China and Hong Kong on June 6, and on limited North American screens on June 7.

Just when you thought it was safe to go to the theater again without suffering through plays about straight couples caught up in parenting issues of interest to no one but themselves, along come liberated gay couples to rehash the old dilemmas in playwright Jordan Harrison’s “Log Cabin,” now playing at Off Broadway’s Playwrights Horizons.
Do we want a baby? Yes? No? Boy? Girl? What shall we name it? Will it ruin our social life? Our sex life? Will we even be decent parents? Will the kid grow up to be as screwed up as we are? And if we do take the plunge, whose sperm should we use? Whose womb? “It’s the thing to ask gay people now,” someone observes about the protocol of bringing up the subject of baby, “after ‘Are you getting married?’”

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.

Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

I’m from Chicago. Most of you already know that. I grew up in the days of Mayor Richard J. Daley (the first Mayor Richard Daley) and the Chicago City Council of his era so I’m used to the concept of politics as theater, as popular culture. The rest of the country is catching up; the Republican Debate last week scored really high ratings for CNN. Some of the big TV shows such as House of Cards and Scandal also score well.
Given my upbringing I’m somewhat a connoisseur of political dramedy. Years ago, in one of the early visits to NYC, I read that a NYC borough president was caught in a scandal and committed suicide. I’m afraid my first rather uncharitable reaction was, “What a wimp.” I was from Chicago; when our politicians got caught and convicted, they would try to run their political fiefdoms...

Chicago – “Mistress America” is a movie that works best in small doses. The film is chock-full of special moments, lines, and fragments of scenes, but it never really comes together as a cohesive film. I could see it easily taking on a second life once it hits streaming and YouTube.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
As a 30-second distillation of a funny thought, idea, or insight it’s actually quite charming. The script by star Greta Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach has scores of quotable dialogue and beautifully written windows into a specific type of literary ennui, and the anxiety of trying to find your place in the world – but taken en masse it’s more exhausting than liberating.
Part of that is due to Gerwig’s character. She’s a 30-year-old motormouth and seemingly flighty at the same time, imparting both big personal bombshells and wild harebrained schemes in the same offhand way...

Chicago – Greta Gerwig’s persona as a character actress has blossomed in the last three years, as she has taken on three women in their twenties at the crossroads of life, in that life decade of consequence. In addition to her title roles in “Lola Versus” and “Francis Ha,” her latest is “Mistress America,” which she also co-wrote.
Directed by Noah Baumbach, the film is essentially a buddy comedy, if the buddies are two women – one a Freshman in college and aspiring writer named Tracy (Lola Kirke), and the other (Gerwig) a overwrought urban survivalist named Brooke – living with uncertainty, guile and pomposity in New York City. Like the Greta Gerwig characters of Lola and Francis, Brooke is an achiever in a different way, as they all learn to understand what their purpose is, when challenged with life altering change that is not necessarily what they wanted.

Continuing our weekly look at "Orange Is the New Black" season 3, two episodes at a time, I have a review of episodes 9 & 10 coming up just as soon as we're panty twinsies... "Sometimes, the kindest thing is to let people go." -Leanne Last week, I suggested that "Oitnb" needed to be careful about giving characters multiple flashback episodes, given how flat and repetitive Alex's story in "Fear, and Other Smells" was. Doctor Who, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, The Simpsons... Juliette talks us through 10 great TV anniversary episodes...
With so many TV shows being cancelled after a season or two, it’s perhaps not surprising that those that keep going long enough to reach a significant milestone often want to mark the occasion in some way. Such celebratory episodes usually feature plenty of nods, in-jokes and references to past episodes and characters (frequently involving special guest stars from the show’s past returning in some form) and tend to be either light, sometimes metafictional comedy episodes, or extremely dramatic game-changers following which the show may never be the same again.
