Following a recipe pretty close to the one in “All About Ah Long”, Johnnie To adapts the Italian film “Incompresso” (1966) by Luigi Comencini, and focuses again on the struggles of a single father, upping, though, the (melo) drama, the tension and the violence, in a way that can easily be described as shocking.

Lee Chi-leung returns to Hong Kong with the ashes of his wife and his two young boys, older Kin and younger Hong, which he now has to take care of by himself, along with a maid who does not seem particularly patient neither with the changes the death brought nor with the children's shenanigans. Furthermore, it is soon revealed that Lee is also plagued by debts, which become worse when a friend convinces him to bet what little he has left on horses, a decision that...

Featuring some of the most iconic Shaw Bros’ actors in the faces of Ti Lung, Lo Lieh, Wong Yu, Wang Lung-wei, Chan Wai-man and Philip Ko, “Mercenaries from Hong Kong” is also very much a Wong Jing vehicle, with the distinct combination of brutal action, slapstick humor and incoherence resulting in another rather entertaining title.
“Mercenaries from Hong Kong” is screening on Fantasia International Film Festival
The movie begins with a sequence that paves the way for what is about to follow as Luo Li is attempting to assassinate a man who exploited his niece, ending up feeding him his own drugs, before escaping and realizing that there is now a contract to his name by the triads. Around that time, he is approached by a mysterious lady named Hei-ying, who is proven to be the daughter of the richest family in Hong Kong, and whose father has been recently murdered by an assassin,...

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of an obscure period chiller expertly assembled by Shen Hsiang Yu. One of the Shaw Brothers’ early attempts at screen horror, this superior gothic romance with a supernatural twist failed to find an audience upon its initial domestic release — a circumstance that led to the studio changing tack and pursuing a more exploitative line of genre flick. However, 45 years on it plays like the kind of film that jaded and/or discerning genre fans might well take great delight in discovering.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton offers an assessment of one of the Shaw Brothers’ quirkier and more idiosyncratic historical martial arts efforts: an action-packed Meng Hua Ho wuxia flick from 1976 that concerns an irredeemable killer sent on a mission to save the life of a despicable and hated tyrant. Outstanding fight choreography, unusual weaponry and unpredictable plot twists help make this frenetically paced show a winner.
