Sundance Institute announced today the fellows selected for the 2024 Directors, Screenwriters, and Native Labs. The Native Lab in New Mexico will support four fellows and two artists in residence, and the Directors Lab in Colorado will support the development of eight projects with nine fellows, with an additional three fellows also joining for the online Screenwriters Lab held immediately after.
For over four decades, Sundance Institute’s signature labs have provided filmmakers a nurturing, immersive environment to develop their projects and refine their artistic voice under the guidance of accomplished creative advisors.
The 2024 Native Lab, taking place in person in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from April 29–May 4, is designed for participants of Native and Indigenous backgrounds and focuses on centering Indigeneity in their storytelling. Fellows will build community and refine their feature film and episodic scripts through one-on-one feedback sections and roundtable discussions with advisors. Despite sharing a life and being in the same profession, husband-and-wife duo Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick haven’t starred in a film together in twenty years. Thankfully for us, that’s about to change as they’ll lead the Michael J. Weithorn-directed film Connescence. The project from Weithorn, who created the TV series The King of Queens, starring Kevin James, Leah Remini, and Jerry Stiller, begins principal photography this week with Victoria Hill and Greg Clark’s Fibonacci Films. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are thrilled to team up for Connescence, and Hollywood is ready to welcome the duo back to the silver screen.
Brittany O’Grady and Judd Hirsch join Bacon and Sedgwick as primary cast members. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Connescence features Kevin Bacon as Stan Olszewski, “a sharp, funny, but chronically underachieving security guard, who breaks up an attempted robbery at the home of...

For the first time in the 96 years of the Academy Awards, three of the 10 films that received Best Picture nominations were directed by women. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" (the blockbuster sensation of 2023), Celine Song's "Past Lives" (my personal choice for the best film of the entire year), and Justine Triet's "Anatomy of a Fall" (the most complex movie of the year) all received Best Picture nominations, and all three are incredibly well-deserved.
As Variety points out, 591 movies had been nominated for Oscars before this year's nominees were announced. In that 95-year span, it's been exceptionally rare for women to have directed two movies nominated for Best Picture:
Only four years have included two films directed by women among the best picture nominees: Lone Scherfig's ["An Education"] and Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" (2009), Lisa Cholodenko's "The Kids Are All Right" and Debra Granik's "Winter's Bone" (2010), Chloé Zhao...

Three female directors saw their movies nab Best Picture nominations Tuesday morning, the first time that’s occurred in Oscar’s 96-year history: Celine Song with Past Lives, Great Gerwig with Barbie and Justine Triet with Anatomy of a Fall.
For a fifth consecutive year, at least one of the Best Picture nominees was directed by a woman.
In the directing category, Triet becomes the ninth woman to be nominated in the category. She is the only female filmmaker this year, joined by Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest).
Previously, only four years counted two Best Picture noms from female filmmakers: 2009 for Lone Scherfig’s An Education and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, 2010 for Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone, 2020 with Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland and...

Women filmmakers hit a milestone with this year’s 2024 Oscar nominations.
For the first time in history, three of the 10 movies nominated for best picture — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives” — were directed by a female auteur, the most recognized in the Academy Awards’ 96-year history.
The other best picture nominees are: “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppehneimer,” “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.”

Michelle Satter, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, has been called “the fairy godmother of independent cinema.” In 1981, she went to work for Robert Redford as the founding director of the Sundance Institute, the labs of which have, in the words of the Associated Press, “helped to launch the first films of many of Hollywood’s top filmmakers,” and, as the Los Angeles Times put it, served as “the premier incubator of indie talent.” She, meanwhile, has been described by our own publication as “a uniquely nurturing presence in an industry that more often than not mocks creativity and trivializes risk-taking.” And Interview magazine declared, “As a film fan, you might not know her name, but if you’re a filmmaker, you certainly do.”
To that point, consider what some alumni of the Sundance labs have said about her…

The 2010 San Diego Comic-Con was not the biggest gathering in the event's history, but in terms of its importance as a movie marketing event, this was the freakin' year. The gargantuan, hangar-sized Hall H, christened in 2004 as the home for star-studded studio panels, was packed on both peak days as major stars and filmmakers shilled the next two years' most anticipated genre titles. Friday was all about "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which, with all its major stars present, turned into a shriek-filled presentation as deafening as The Beatles' 1964 appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
And then there was Saturday.
Warner Bros. kicked off the Hall H festivities with a buzzy panel that could've matched the "Twilight" delirium had the main Harry Potter trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint showed up for the "Deathly Hallows: Part I" preview. The day threatened to descend into chaos when a...

On a recent episode of "Hot Ones," actor Mark Rufflao was invited on to discuss his career while chocking down incredibly spicy hot wings. Sean Evans, the show's host, read a film synopsis to Ruffalo and asked if he could identify the title. Evans read a synopsis for a 1994 film called "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," a straight-to-video horror film put out by the beloved B-movie studio Image Entertainment. Ruffalo, of course, could indeed identify the movie. "That's 'Mirror Mirror,'" he said. "That was probably my first movie." Indeed it was.
Ruffalo pointed out that there was "Mirror, Mirror" and then there was "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance," which had a "Penthouse pornstar" as the lead actress and Billy Drago as the male lead. He noted that he played "the series actor sidekick." He joked that he had established a brand with the "Mirror Mirror" movies, sarcastically imitating...

On a recent day at the beach, actress Nikki Reed was basking in the California sun when a 15-year-old girl approached her. “I would love to take a picture with you!” the young fan exclaimed. Her interest in Reed, however, had nothing to do with her role as vampire Rosalie Hale in the mega-popular Twilight movies.
“Thirteen is my favorite film in the world,” the teenager said. “It actually inspired me to want to write and I already wrote my first screenplay.”

With his long hair, sunglasses and bellbottoms, Hal Ashby was the epitome of the 1970s flower child, even though he was a decade older than most of the filmmakers working at the time. Though his flame burned brightly and briefly, he left behind a series of classics that signified the nose-thumbing, countercultural attitude of the era, with a bit of humanism and heart thrown in for good measure. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born on September 2, 1929 in Utah, Ashby ambled around before becoming an apprentice editor for Robert Swink, working for Hollywood legends William Wyler and George Stevens. He moved up the ranks to become an editor for Norman Jewison, with whom he shared a fraternal and professional relationship. They cut five films together, including “The Russians Are Coming! From trans lives to celebrations of drag, queer film pulled no punches as it hit screens in the 90s with a DIY bravura that transformed the movie industry
Queer film exploded like a glitter cannon in the 1990s, sending sparkling product raining down in every direction. Trans lives hit the screen in Orlando and Boys Don’t Cry, alongside dynamic bulletins from the Black queer experience. We had jubilant celebrations of drag with Paris Is Burning and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, provocations from New Queer Cinema in the shape of Poison, Swoon and Edward II; there were auteurist masterpieces and timeless coming-out stories. The Wachowski sisters, Lisa Cholodenko, François Ozon and Bruce Labruce all made their debuts; Pedro Almodóvar and Gus Van Sant went stratospheric. The Sundance Institute has announced the fellows for the 2023 Directors, Screenwriters, and Native labs. For the past 40 years, Sundance Institute labs have hosted global independent filmmakers for in-depth tutorship on the creative process. Afterward, they’re honored at the annual Sundance Producers Celebration keynote at the festival in January itself. The festival itself returned this year in rousing in-person fashion, but the individual creative labors occur throughout the rest of the year.
This year’s Directors and Screenwriters Labs will support 12 fellows, with five fellows selected for the Native Lab. Artists will develop original works under the guidance of accomplished creative advisors.

There's nothing like a good miniseries. The ability to take as much time as needed to tell a dense yet self-contained story, marrying the immediacy and formal panache of great cinema to the narrative depth of great TV, has allowed many auteurs in both mediums to create some of their finest and most vital work.
Historically, miniseries have been the province of some of television's most memorable hits, from "Roots" to "Taken" to "Band of Brothers." Series like Ingmar Bergman's "Scenes from a Marriage" and Mike Nichols' "Angels in America" are also regularly cited in the upper tiers of master directors' filmographies. In recent years, the format has seen a kind of mainstream revival, thanks largely to the smashing success of titles like "The Queen's Gambit" and "Watchmen."

Despite the unpredictability of the last few years, both in Hollywood and beyond, recent years have proven fruitful for female filmmakers. From winning the top awards at the starriest festivals to notching back to back Best Director Oscar winners (for the first time ever for Zhao and Jane Campion) and churning out big-time box office hits, women have been unquestionably on the rise.
Until, perhaps, now. As we do every year, IndieWire is looking ahead at the next two years of studio features directed by women to get a sense of who Hollywood is elevating in still-rarefied spaces. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director.
But it’s hard to deny the power and prestige of directing a big-time movie released by a major studio, even in a world where streaming platforms are making significant inroads into the “blockbuster” space.

A series by Juan Carlos Ojano. Introduction / Explanation
After Kathryn Bigelow’s historic Director win at the previous Oscars for The Hurt Locker, the 2010 roster of nominees returned to the usual all-male lineup. The eventual five were pretty much unquestioned. David Fincher was the early frontrunner for Facebook drama The Social Network. Darren Aronofsky and David O. Russell received their first nominations in this category for the psychological horror Black Swan and the sports drama The Fighter, respectively. The inclusion of the Coen Brothers was considered a semi-surprise for the late-breaking Western True Grit. Ultimately, the winner was Tom Hooper for the Best Picture-winning historical drama The King’s Speech.
Given that context, it is still a bit discouraging to see the return to normal especially with two female-directed films also up for Best Picture: Lisa Cholodenko’s dramedy The Kids are All Right and Debra Granik’s mystery drama Winter’s Bone.

In the Hulu limited series “The Girl From Plainville,” there are no definitive answers about the “whys” of what led Massachusetts teen Michelle Carter (Elle Fanning) to encourage her boyfriend Conrad Roy (Colton Ryan) to kill himself in July 2014, an act for which she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served nearly 11-and-a-half months in prison.
Did Carter, an awkward young woman without a lot of friends, encourage Roy’s suicide in the hopes that his death would win her the sympathy of her classmates and opportunities for a more active social life?
In one memorable moment in the miniseries, teen TV drama fan Carter imagines herself and Roy singing and dancing along to “their song,” Reo Speedwagon’s “I Can’t Fight This Feeling,” like her favorite “Glee” couple Rachel and Finn from the Fox series. Was Carter a naïve, sheltered, pampered, and bored girl who liked to fantasize about a more dramatic life?...

The upcoming Hulu series “The Girl from Plainville” re-examines the infamous texting-suicide case that rocked headlines in the mid 2010s.
Elle Fanning leads the series, premiering March 29, as Michelle Carter, who was prosecuted in the case following the death of her boyfriend Conrad Roy III (Colton Ryan). The real-life court case was at the center of Jesse Barron’s 2017 Esquire article of the same name, and was captured in the 2019 HBO documentary “I Love You, Now Die.”
The Massachusetts-set Hulu saga revisits Carter’s alleged abusive behavior, encouragement, and persuasion that was thought to have led to 18-year-old Roy’s suicide.
A first-look trailer shows Fanning as Carter copping to thousands of “messed-up texts” that seemed to “encourage” Conrad to take his life. Per Hulu, the series explores Carter’s relationship with Roy, the events that led to his death, and later, her trial and conviction of involuntary manslaughter. Chloë Sevigny...

In the 93-year history of the Academy Awards, only seven women have been nominated in the Best Director category. While this stat remains abysmal and speaks to the lack of opportunities for women in the industry compared to men, it is gradually getting better. Just last year, Chloe Zhao became the second woman to win Best Director for “Nomadland” in a category that, for the first time, included another female director, Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman.” This year, history may be made again if (when) Jane Campion is nominated for “The Power of the Dog,” becoming the first woman to be nominated twice in Best Director. Take a look back at the seven female directors nominated for Oscars in our photo gallery above.
It all started with Lina Wertmüller, the Italian director who became the first female Best Director nominee for her 1976 film “Seven Beauties.” Flash forward almost 20 years...

CAA’s acquisition of ICM Partners, the biggest shakeup in the Hollywood representation space in over a decade, continues a tradition of consolidation in the agency business. CAA and Endeavor both were launched by star agents who left established powerhouses Wma and ICM, respectively. The fastest way to grow is through acquisition or merger. Since size is crucial in the cutthroat agency business, here is how CAA would scale up in different areas if its acquisition of ICM Partners goes through to form a combined company that would continue to carry the CAA name.
Before ICM purchased the Stellar Group in October 2020, their annual billings were estimated to be around $200M, fueled by TV, TV lit and its publishing divisions. Based on that, industry insiders estimate that CAA likely shelled out more than $550M for ICM. ICM has offices in New York, Los Angeles and London, with roughly 400-plus employees.
