The impact of George A. Romero’s Dead movies reached far and wide. After 1968’s Night of the Living Dead defined the modern zombie as we know it, 1978’s Dawn of the Dead kick-started zombie cinema in earnest. Not only did it herald a horde of undead movies domestically, the infection spread internationally — although the outbreak took longer to reach some regions than others.
While Italy was first to strike with Lucio Fulci’s Zombie in 1979, Hong Kong wouldn’t get its first zombie movie until two decades later. A zombie film set in a mall, 1998’s Bio Zombie is a direct descendant of Dawn of the Dead. It also draws influence from the original Resident Evil game (which is featured in the film), although the zombie comedy plays more like a Return of the Living Dead sequel by way of early Kevin Smith (think Clerks or Mallrats).

When it comes to making a movie, there are probably thousands of stories, especially regarding the financing and finding the right production company. At times these backgrounds are just as comedic, suspenseful and entertaining as the movies themselves, which is why these are also turned into documentaries, for example, “Heart of Darkness” about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now”. The Asian movie industry has its own brand of stories to tell in that regard, as the film business consists just as much of shady characters as probably anywhere else, and also creative minds who would do anything to fulfill their dream of a feature of their own. Renowned photographer and radio personality Sunny Lau was probably inspired by some of them for his director debut “Sugar Street Studio”, a feature which is just as a much a ghost story as it is about the fine line between...

Hong Kong's leading comedienne Sandra Ng re-teams with Golden Chicken writer-turned-director Matt Chow for the Lunar New Year comedy 12 Golden Ducks. Money and gold are always associated with this auspicious festival, while duck is Cantonese slang for male prostitute (just as chicken is for their female colleagues). So, it's business as usual, with Ng again setting her sights on the city's industrious and entrepreneurial sex industry, only this time Sandra is one of the boys. Just check out her golden abs in the poster below!Featuring an all-star cast including Louis Koo, Nicholas Tse, Simon Yam, Joey Yung, Chrissie Chau, Anthony Wong, Zhao Wei and pretty much everyone else currently working in Hong Kong, 12 Golden Ducks opens on 19 February and is a surefire...

Chinese New Year is just around the corner (well, Mid-February actually) and that means Hong Kong Cinema is prepping its annual onslaught of ridiculous, crowd-pleasing comedies that will be (hopefully) packing them in during the festival period.Director Matt Chow and producer/star Sandra Ng (Golden Chicken$$$) have just released the first teaser for their new film, 12 Golden Ducks, and it pitches the film as a camp, raunchy and frankly rather ridiculous affair focusing squarely on the comedic chops of its female (or at least she used to be) star!Putting an intriguing spin on her hugely successful Golden Chicken series, 12 Golden Ducks follows the highs and lows of a group of strutting male gigalos as they struggle to survive the economic downturn. Ng's gender doesn't seem to be a problem at...

Magnum Pictures has pre-bought two titles from Media Asia – Helios and Triumph In The Sky – for Australia/Nz. The distributor has also set a Canada release date for Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2 following the positive reaction to its Tiff screening.
The romantic comedy sequel, directed by Johnnie To, will be released in Canada on November 14, just a few days after its release in China and Hong Kong on November 11.
The deal for the two new acquisitions was also sealed during Tiff. Currently in post-production, Helios is an action thriller directed by Sunny Lok and Longman Leung and featuring a pan-Asian cast.

Magnum picked up North American rights to Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2 at this year’s Cannes film festival and market.
