Genndy Tartakovsky makes everything he works on better, but even he wasn't able to fix the hot mess that was "Iron Man 2." In Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards' book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios," the acclaimed filmmaker behind beloved titles like "Samurai Jack," "Dexter's Laboratory," and "Star Wars: Clone Wars" reveals that he was tapped by director Jon Favreau to help streamline the Marvel sequel's climax.
"Jon was a fan, and he liked the sensibility that I had on 'Samurai,'" Tartakovsky said in an interview for "MCU." "I know what I would want from this situation, so I just tried to give it to him — and he could use all of it or none of it." While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

After The Avengers dominated the summer blockbuster season earning $1.5 billion globally, it’s come as no surprise that DC Comics have set their sights on making a Justice League movie of their own to see if lightening will strike twice.
While it seems like a fine idea, the question is how will they follow in Marvel’s footsteps. There’s no telling when audiences will tire of superheroes, and DC have indicated that they might not spend the next five years on follow up movies the way that Marvel did.
Marc Chu, the animation director of The Avengers, in an interview with Screen Rant, suggested that DC would be best served introducing the Justice League one member at a time, similar to the route that Marvel took.
“I think the success of [The Avengers] is purely built on Marvel and [Marvel executive Kevin Feige’s] vision to get to that goal.” Chu said when he heard that...

Marvel's The Avengers was a monster at the box office this summer. So far, it grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, and it's the highest-grossing film of the year. One of the best parts of the film was Bruce Banner/Hulk (played brilliantly by Mark Ruffalo), where director Joss Whedon made this character in a way that we have all been waiting for. The talented VFX artists at Industrial Light & Magic were the ones who made the Green Goliath belivable, and the results were quite breathtaking. Now, talking to High-Def Digest about the whole process of making visuals for this film, Ilm Animation Director Marc Chu and Visual Effects Supervisor Jeff White shared a lot of information on Iron Man's suit, CG version of New York City, what was the most challenging shot of the film and much more. Hidefdigest.Com: Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man suit has evolved over the last few movies, in part to make him more comfortable on set. Do you approach enhancing a partial suit any differently than character animation or a fully CGI character? Marc Chu: You know, it's a different challenge and after the first movie, when Robert saw, oh, wow, look at that, he realized he could not wear as much as he needed to. It gave him freedom. He was like, wow, I don't need to wear half of the suit and I could get the same effect. And that allows him to be more comfortable for sure because that thing is not built to be worn any long duration. It'll pinch you, I can't even put the helmet on. I tried one time. We got the helmet up here and I was like, oh, good, I'm going...

This week, in the run up to the release of Avengers Assemble, we’ve been running interviews with the stars of the film. With the movie finally hitting multiplexes today, we’re running our fourth and final interview – Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo.
As with our other interviews, we begin by discussing the environment on set, but quickly move on to the subject of Hemsworth reuniting with Whedon, and Mark Ruffalo becoming the newest cinematic Hulk, as well as his views on award recognition for motion capture performances.
Working As Part Of An Ensemble Cast
Ego wise, was it a big battle on the set?
Mark Ruffalo: Not in the least.
Chris Hemsworth: I think that was probably the most common question before shooting. All the trailers were the same size. We went out and measured them.
Mr: Once we realised all the trailers were the same size everything calmed down.
