It’s been a while since I’ve taken a Fulci out for a spin; frankly the latter part of his career has generally been met with the indifference (and occasional disdain) afforded his fellow countryman Dario Argento. Fair? Well, art is subjective, but even strict apologists have a hard time defending some late in the game efforts. Which brings us to Aenigma (1987), Fulci’s take on Argento, and a fine last gasp of electric madness.
Distributed by Filman International late December in France, Aenigma didn’t see release in Fulci’s homeland until August of ’88; by this point his films weren’t even making it stateside anymore, and it didn’t show up in North America until late October the following year for a limited run. When DVDs started making noise in the early ‘00s, Aenigma was finally brought to a wider audience who promptly gave it the awkward smile of a disappointed parent.

The One Direction Brit Awards sponsored by Mastercard. With added One Direction, jokes about One Direction, special performances from One Direction and a made up award for One Direction.
The Brit Awards have never been scintillating telly - don't let hazy nostalgia about Jarvis Cocker bum-wiggling or Chumbawumba water-chucking fool you - but this year really took the biscuit, as two hours of James Corden backslapping the world of pop and its record execs felt longer than a Oscar Pistorius bail hearing.
When the best performance of the night comes from squeaky clean American country girl Taylor Swift, you know things are looking bleak. The only glimmer of excitement came when Louis Smith and Jack Whitehall presented a gong together in the manner of a couple going though an expensive and mucky divorce. Someone hire them to host next year, we might have another Fox and Fleetwood on our hands.

I'm starting to take a step back from the entertainment side and move into charity and school work. Having spent two weeks reporting on the Olympics, our writer threw off his detachment and embraced the joyful spirit of London 2012
I have occasionally been a bit troubled by those old Pathé newsreel clips of British sporting events in which, at climactic moments, the men in the crowd chuck their hats – flat caps and trilbys – in the air, and turn to clap one another on worsted and gabardined backs. It always seemed incongruous this Depression-era hat-hurling, and the film clips left the story unfinished: was there always a confusing and awkward five minutes on the terraces subsequently when all the hats were politely returned to their rightful owners, and bashed back into shape? And what of the impulse itself? Reckless, un-British, an expression of simple, unselfconscious joy – it seemed to come from another place entirely. I never quite understood it. I never quite understood it, that is, until this past fortnight.

Part of what he said was “If Madonna had any common sense she would have made a record like Ray Of Light and stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and make great pop records, which she does brilliantly. But no, she had to go and prove… she looks like a f*cking fairground stripper. She’s been horrible to Gaga.

I can barely make it from the couch to the refrigerator in under 30 seconds — even when I’m super peckish — which made the finals of the Men’s 100 meter Sprint at the 2012 Summer Olympics all the more mind-boggling.
Yes indeed, Jamaica’s legendary Usain Bolt (pictured) only took 9.63 seconds to earn the Gold versus what NBC’s commentators called one of the fastest fields of humans ever assembled. (Indeed, the 2012 100m finals marked the first time in Olympic history that five men managed to finish in under 9.9 seconds.) That Bolt played DJ scratching at an imaginary turntable right before he...

Thor 2 has announced the villain, and my lack of comics knowledge means I have no comment on Malekith the Accursed, who leads the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. But I do have a comment on the actor, Christopher Eccleston, who I love.

Speaking of the Olympics, I'm not one to normally watch boxing, but Italian Clemente Russo has my full attention.

Yesterday's (July 30) London 2012 highlights include Pixie Lott in a red puff-ball dress performing at the opening of the men's gymnastics final, singing 'Use Somebody' and 'Kiss the Stars.' Prince William and an emotional Prince Harry then watched Great Britain's Daniel Purvis, Max Whitlock, Louis Smith, Kristian Thomas and Sam Oldham win bronze, the first Olympic medal for male British gymnasts in 100 years, during the artistic gymnastics final. “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” may be the slogan for ABC’s defunct Wide World of Sports, but rarely has it been as apt as on the third day of NBC’s Olympic primetime coverage. The U.S. pulled in some major hardware in the swimming pool — though Ryan Lochte faltered for the second day in a row, and went home without a medal for the first time at this Olympics. America landed its first medal for men’s diving since 1996 — but diver Tom Daley, Great Britain’s most famous Olympian and one of its best chances for gold,...

London 2012 athlete Louis Smith has described his brief stint on The X Factor as just "a bit of fun". The 22-year-old Olympian has juggled a love for singing and gymnastics his whole life, and four years ago tried out for Simon Cowell's ITV competition. "It was a bit of fun," he told the Radio Times. "I had to make a decision when I was 8 and got offered a scholarship in singing either to do that full time or carry on with gym. I chose gym." However, Smith's fellow Team Gb competitor Beth Tweddle revealed that his passion for music is still very much alive. "He (more)...

The first full day of sporting events at Olympics XXX featured the first face-off between Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps, a thrilling beach volleyball battle between Team USA and Team Australia, an impressive (and not entirely believable) attempt by NBC to transform the men’s gymnastics competition into a topical America vs. China showdown, and the usual dose of filler melodrama. Look elsewhere for a breakdown of the impressive athleticism on display: Here’s your recap of the pure spectacle of NBC’s coverage of the 30th modern Olympics, Day 1.

When he is swimming, Michael Phelps looks like the logical endpoint of human evolution. He is tall-chinned and broad-shouldered, with muscles that look specifically invented for his body and no one else’s. He looks like every dude from 300 mashed together, like Michelangelo’s David with less pudge. The problem is, when he takes off the swim cap and goggles, Phelps is an undeniably goofy-looking guy. To a certain extent, this is part of Phelps’ charm: He comes off like a gawky kid you knew in kindergarten, if that kid decided to spend the next two decades becoming the greatest athlete in history.

Jls have unveiled a behind-the-scenes look at their latest music video. The boyband will release 'Proud' as this year's official Sport Relief charity single on March 19. The accompanying music video was filmed at Wembley Stadium and the newly-released behind-the-scenes footage hears the group's thoughts on appearing at the legendary sporting venue. Aston Merrygold explained: "I didn't quite think I'd be walking out to Wembley Stadium doing a music video. I thought I'd be out here in a World Cup final. But this is just as good, I'm not going to lie." The video also stars Olympic athletes Rebecca Adlington, Phillips Idowu and Louis Smith. Speaking about (more)...

The music video for Jls’s official Sport Relief single, Proud, sees three British Olympic medal winners join the UK’s hottest pop group to celebrate the UK’s biggest year of sport.
Swimmer and double gold medal winner Rebecca Adlington, triple jumper and silver medal winner Phillips Idowu and gymnast and bronze medal winner Louis Smith star in the music video alongside Jls.
Directed by Ben Winston, who directed and co-wrote the infamous Smithy sketches for Comic Relief, the video sees Jls performing in an empty Wembley Stadium as the stories of three gifted children unfold. One young boy displays a remarkable talent for leaping; another impresses with his acrobatic break dancing abilities; and a young girl dances triumphantly in the rain as others run for cover.

Jls have debuted the music video for their new single. The group will release 'Proud' as this year's official Sport Relief song on March 19, with the profits to be donated to projects and charities that support underprivileged children. The accompanying music video sees all four members perform the track in a low-lit and cold Wembley Stadium, while British Olympic medal winners Rebecca Adlington, Phillips Idowu and Louis Smith also feature. Speaking about their involvement, Jls said: "We're so excited to be part of Sport Relief 2012 and to have the official single is a massive honour for us. George Clooney wants to get his hands on an Olympic ticket, London cabbies are unhappy and Britain's spies will be chained to their desks
Canada's women celebrate in defeat
Canada's women footballers were left to celebrate their qualification for 2012, despite being thrashed 4-0 by the USA in the Concacaf Olympic qualifying final. A 3-1 win over Mexico in the semis had already guaranteed the Canadians a spot at this summer's Games for only the second time. Probably just as well.
Madrid look to the distant future
There are already concerns over the logo for Madrid's 2020 Games bid, which was released this week. The logo, designed by a 22-year-old graphic arts student, appears to read 'Madrid 20020'. A whopping 81% of the Spanish public have declared their opposition to the logo, while commentators have labelled the design as "confusing and naff".

Sean Hayes has sold a Western to NBC. It's going to center around a doctor who moves to the Rockies and stands out because he doesn't fight with guns, but rather new theories that are being practiced in the East. So it's largely Doctor Quinn, Medicine Women with a male lead. Someone get Chad Allen on the phone.
PETA is upset. What, you need me to be more specific? Well, this time it's about the New York Times picture of the "sexy chicken" which has been drawing raves. But according to PETA, "It's necrophilia. It's not amusing. It's just ghastly and sickly. It's not fitting for The New York Times." After watching Mitchell and Cam go nuts on a juice fast last night, I can't help but think PETA would be less angry if they'd just eat a steak.
Another judge has ruled that Illinois is perfectly within their rights...

Anderson Cooper will interview Gerard Depardieu (who inspired his uncontrollable giggles on his old nighttime show) on his new daytime show, . The question is how polite-to-a-fault Cooper can manage to be in the interview without cracking up to Depardieu's face.
Universal has bought the rights to 364 for Ron Howard to direct. While details are slim, the title refers to the 364 days out of the year that a man plans what heroic acts he will perform on the one day of the year he has super powers. It's unclear if he's the only one who gets powers for a day, or if everyone does. But it does pose an interesting question: What would you do if you got super powers one day each year?
