Set in San Francisco on the eve of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Dogfight is pitched on the precipice of a massive sea change in American life. The post-war boom of the 1950s is waning, and the civil rights era and the Vietnam War are right around the corner. The film’s protagonists exist, then, in a kind of liminal space, uncomfortable in their own skin and riddled with anxieties and uncertainties about their immediate futures.
Released in 1991, when nostalgia for the ’60s was near its peak, Nancy Savoca’s film takes a distinctly feminine perspective on the era, challenging the unbridled machismo and ritualistic behaviors that were often celebrated, or at least unexamined, in the male-directed films of the time. For the opening 20 minutes, we bear witness to an especially cruel competition in which Eddie Birdlace (River Phoenix), an 18-year-old Marine, and several of his jarhead buddies, all on...

Did you hear the one about the stand-up comedy competition that returned to NBC after a four-year hiatus?
We actually don’t have a punchline for that question. Because we’re not comics. But the contestants are on Last Comic Standing are comics. And NBC is bringing back the show after taking an extended break from the format.
The eighth season of Last Comic Standing, which first launched in 2003, will air next summer on NBC. The broadcaster actually cancelled the series in 2004 after three cycles, but then brought it back in 2006. After the seventh season in 2010, the show went off the air again,...

Elegant and meticulous actor whose work ranged from Shakespeare to EastEnders
Paul Bhattacharjee, who has been found dead aged 53, was one of the country's leading British Asian actors, a key member of Jatinder Verma's Tara Arts, a regular at the Royal Shakespeare Company – he was last seen in the West End last year, playing Benedick opposite Meera Syal in the RSC's Much Ado About Nothing – and a popular television and film actor whose roles included Inzamam in the BBC soap EastEnders, an immigration officer called Mohammed in Stephen Frears's Dirty Pretty Things (2002) and parts in the Bond movie Casino Royale (2006) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011).
He was tall, slim and naturally funny, always meticulous in his movement and perfect in his articulation. He reminded me of an elegant bird – a heron, perhaps, or a flamingo. His eyes twinkled as much as they burned. He slowed things down, rather than speeded them up,...

Melbourne, Feb 6: A male escort company from Australia thinks there's a market in Brisbane for a non-sexual escort service.
However, critics doubt that women will take to the idea, instead, preferring genuine companionship.
Male Escorts Brisbane, which is the brainchild of entrepreneur Anthony Clark, said that he believed the agency was the first of its kind in the River City for women seeking male company.
"I'm guessing there are quite a few lonely ladies out there who are reasonably wealthy and looking for companionship either for dinner or for an activity," the Courier Mail quoted him as saying.
He said that.

De-fund the American space agency, leave the planet open to invasion by massive space bees--that's the argument I'm getting from Ryan North and Christopher Hastings' "Galaga" webcomic. The "Invasion" storyline has just begun, and you should be reading it.
The strip launched over on gaming-themed comics site Shifty Look, with a script by "Dinosaur Comics" writer Ryan North and "The Adventures of Dr. McNinja" creator Christopher Hastings. Both writers are adept at taking the absurd and making it rad: in this case, an intergalactic* bee invasion, and the Earth what's gonna fight them off.
North and Hastings are joined by Anthony Clark on colors, so you can blame him for those terrifyingly iridescent bees.
The first installment of "Invasion" launched on Monday, with new pages each subsequent day.
*I have no proof that these bees are from another galaxy.

All of Katz’s clients at New Wave will follow him to the new company including Jay Mohr, Christopher Titus, Bill Bellamy, Paul Rodriguez, Cheri Oteri, Nick Dipaolo and Faizon Love. Katz ran his original Barry Katz Entertainment for 15 years before selling it to New Wave at the end of 2003. Over the past eight years, he was involved in New Wave’s transformation into a full-service talent management, digital distribution, and production company with over 25 managers, producers, and development executives. The two sides parted ways last month when Katz’s contract was up. “After being a part of creating a different kind of management company — one that combined representation and production — I wanted to get back to focus less on the issues of a large company,...

I hate newspaper comic strips with ongoing storylines. How anyone can follow an arc of Spider-Man over the course of four months is beyond me. My opinion of webcomics is about the same: anything with a continuous thread more than five panels long gets on my nerves. Thankfully, Dark Horse Books has been compiling some of the most prolific webcomics into hefty printed volumes, the latest of which is Christopher Hastings’ The Adventures of Dr. McNinja: Night Powers, which debuted at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.
Dr. McNinja has been around the interwebs for several years now, but all you have to know when picking up this volume is that the main character is both a doctor and a ninja. If you can wrap your head around this concept, Hastings does rather well taking it from there.

Since the mid-1980s, NBC has always had at least two sitcom footholds during their Must See Thursday offerings, with shows like: "The Cosby Show," "Family Ties" "Different Strokes," "Mad About You," "Night Court," "Cheers," "Taxi," "Seinfeld," "Frasier," "Friends," and -- for the last few years -- "The Office" and "30 Rock." But the network has often struggled to fill in those gaps. launching a number of mediocre to putrid sitcoms in those holes. Yet, up until "Friends" left the air, and before the prevalence of DVRs, NBC had such a stronghold on on the night, that many of those sitcoms managed top ten ratings. Few probably remember the Christina Applegate sitcom, Jesse," for instance, but it ran for two years. In its first year, it was the sixth-highest rated show of 1998 -1999, receiving about two-and-a-half times more viewers than "The Office" does today (or five times the viewers of "Community.

When the world is in trouble, leave it to us nerd to give up some hard earned cash for cool causes. With the gulf coast being drenched in more oil than it takes to straighten Harry Osbourne's coif... Mike Leigh and Athol Fugard star in Hall's ambitious bid to restore Hampstead to its illustrious past
It's good to see Ed Hall installed at Hampstead and announcing a juicy opening season: it includes Hall directing Shelagh Stephenson's Enlightenment, Athol Fugard at the helm of his own play, The Train Driver, and Melly Still's Beasts and Beauties, a funny, magical piece that premiered at Bristol Old Vic a few years back (not to mention the return of Mike Leigh, who will direct his 1979 hit Ecstasy.
It's brave of Hall to take on the Hampstead challenge, a theatre that has already seen off Anthony Clark, and has never really recovered from the move from its leaky old premises to a spanking new theatre. The place might have keeled over entirely if it had not been for the Arts Council's determination not to see it fail.

Maybe it's because NBC needs programming, especially during the summer. Maybe it's because the network needed a companion to 'America's Got Talent.' But it does seem like 'Last Comic Standing' has become the 'According to Jim' of reality shows, doesn't it? The show just doesn't die, no matter how much NBC and its producers have tried to kill it.
The folks who brought us the genius idea of Jay Leno at 10Pm has decided to resurrect 'Last Comic,' which they canned in 2008, for a summer run, according to Joe Adalian at The Wrap. Craig Robinson of 'The Office' and the forthcoming comedy flick 'Hot Tub Time Machine' has been tabbed to host.
At least the new host gives me hope for this new version. Robinson has a great comic presence, whether he's intimidating Michael Scott as warehouse foreman Darryl Philbin, or just doing his stand-up at a local club.

Twentieth Television has sealed its first wave of off-network sales for the 20th Century Fox TV-produced CBS sitcom Yes, Dear, which will bow in syndication this fall. Twentieth has cleared the show on Fox O&Os and other stations covering 67% of U.S. TV households, including Fox-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The domestic comedy, revolving around two young couples with children who live together but have very different parenting styles, is being offered to stations on an all-barter, no-cash basis for a two-year license term. Yes, Dear, starring Anthony Clark and Mike O'Malley, bowed as part of CBS' Monday sitcom block in fall 2000. "Every time 'Yes, Dear' has been asked to perform, it's done well, and now it's successfully leading off CBS' pivotal Monday night comedy lineup," Twentieth president and chief operating officer Bob Cook said. "Sitcoms run for many years (in syndication), play in multiple dayparts and deliver a high concentration of adults 18-49."...
