VFX educator Pam Hogarth and Pixar’s Pete Docter were among the honorees at this year’s Visual Effects Society Honors Celebration.
The in-person ceremony took place on Oct. 14 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, Calif., where Ves members celebrated their colleagues’ achievements and the organization’s 25th anniversary.
Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer best known for directing “Monsters, Inc.,” “Up,” “Inside Out” and “Soul,” received this year’s Honorary Membership.
“It’s been a dream of mine to join Ves without having to pay,” Docter said jokingly in his acceptance speech. “I had one overriding obsession: to sell insurance. But instead, I got a job in animation … To everyone at Pixar, who would’ve dreamt that someday I would be lucky enough to work alongside hundreds of amazingly talented people using the latest cutting-edge technology — all to avoid dealing with real life.”

While Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity" is undoubtedly one of this year's best pictures, it also marks a technical achievement never before seen in film. Rising Sun Pictures (Rsp), the visual effects company that produced some effects for the film, decided to breakdown one of the movie's more spectacular sequences in a two minute video. In the video, Rsp presents a stereoscopic view of the fictional Tiangong space station entering the atmosphere and breaking apart, a scene in the latter part of the film. Tim Webber, who is the visual effects mastermind behind "Gravity," and is nominated for an Oscar for his work on the film, devised the sequence that Rsp produced. Co-founder Tony Clark called it one of the most intricate works his company has ever shot, specifically citing the forces and objects that come into play when shooting such a scene. “The hardest thing to visualize is something that everyone knows to exist,...

Anne Hathaway has a new 'do. The actress was spotted in London with a spankin'-new pixie cut. She cut her hair super-short for her role as Fantine in the splashy big-screen adaptation of "Les Miserables."
Hathaway was photographed early Sunday morning leaving London hot spot the Box, where she had been hanging out with her fiancé, Adam Shulman and a female friend, according to People.com. In the pic, she's seen covering her hair with her hand.
The haircut makes sense given Fantine's story line. At one point during "Les Mis," Fantine, an ill-fated prostitute, chops off her hair in order to get money to buy food for her child, Cosette.

Style photographer Elaine Constantine is making a film about her teen crush: the Northern Soul scene. Bob Stanley joins the kids polishing their moves and hoping to make the grade on screen
On a Thursday afternoon at the Old Queens Head pub in north London, it's pretty quiet. There are just three or four customers at the bar downstairs, but coming through the ceiling is an insistent, Motown-like bassline. Climb the stairs and you're in another world. Skating across the parquet floor are some 200 kids spinning, dropping, sweating to a five-decades-old tune called Suspicion by the Originals. Around the edge of the floor are a few furrow-browed, older onlookers. This isn't a club, it's a practice session. It has the atmosphere of a boxing ring.
Photographer Elaine Constantine has been obsessed with Northern Soul since 1976, when she went to a youth club in her home town of Bury, Lancashire. "I...

Australia’s screen professionals must be free to practice their skills anywhere in the world, but how do we stop this healthy career development from becoming a dangerous brain drain? Miguel Gonzalez reports.
If we were to make a list of all the Australian screen practitioners who have made it overseas, it would be a very long list indeed. It would probably start with the A-list creatives everybody knows, followed by the more anonymous and numerous executives, directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, VFX artists and technicians working all over the world.
While it is to be expected that many – if not all – industry practitioners would seek to expand their horizons and work internationally at some point in their careers to reach other markets, work in other systems and cultures and develop new skills, leaving Australia should not be an act of professional desperation.

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.

Unlike other Academy Awards to be presented this year, achievements receiving Scientific and Technical Awards need not have been developed and introduced during 2010. Rather, the achievements must demonstrate a proven record of contributing significant value to the process of making motion pictures.

Adelaide-based Rising Sun Pictures has confirmed it will deliver VFX for the Warner Bros. blockbuster Green Lantern.
“The sustained strength of the Australian dollar is not helping attract lucrative, longer term contracts to our shores. Rising Sun is pleased to have brought a fraction of the Green Lantern spend back to Australia,” said CEO Michael Taylor.
According to Taylor, a sliding rebate scale locked in with the dollar exchange rate (to a maximum of 30 percent) would help re-position Australia internationaly. Company director Tony Clark added that while this project will benefit from the reduction in the Pdv rebate threshold, “the Australian Government still needs to do more to ensure the local industry can remain competitive on a larger scale”.

The Location and Post, Digital and Visual Effects (Pdv) rebates have been officially modified to make Australia more competitive to attract international production.
The changes apply from July 1, with the Pdv threshold set at $500,000 (down from $5m). As for the Loction rebate, international productions in the $15-50m range will no longer be required to spend 70 percent of their budget in the country.
The announcement was made as part of the 2010 Federal Budget, and is the result of intense industry lobbying over the loss of competitiveness due to a more expensive Australian dollar and an increase in incentives offered by other countries and Us states. The combination of both factors has seen a considerable number of international features and post-production work lost to other territories.
“Reducing the Pdv threshold to $500 000 will make Australia’s world-class, but smaller, Pdv providers more competitive when bidding for work outsourced by Hollywood studios, increasing...

Hot on the heels of news that a pirated copy of the upcoming blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been leaked to the Internet has come a denial from a visual effects company that worked on the film that a member of its staff was responsible. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the name of the company, Rising Sun Pictures, appears in a caption in the pirate copy.
"As we worked on individual sequences within the film, neither Rising Sun Pictures or its staff members have ever been in possession of a full-length version, so it would have been impossible for the movie to have been leaked from here," said the company's chairman and co-founder Tony Clark in a statement.
Rising Sun Pictures is an Australian company with an impressive pedigree in Hollywood blockbusters. Among the other films they have worked on are Terminator Salvation, Watchmen, Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince and...

Rising Sun Pictures, the Australian special effects company responsible for the computer magic of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" denied responsibility for the leak of the film.
Rising Sun chairman and co-founder Tony Clark says:
"As we worked on individual sequences within the film, neither Rising Sun Pictures or its staff members have ever been in possession of a full-length version, so it would have been impossible for the movie to have been leaked from here."
Here's my question -- if the leaked film does not have special effects, how can Rising Sun be responsible for it?
Needless to say, the film's parent company, 20th Century Fox is furious! Studio bosses are vowing to force prosecution!
The FBI are investigating the case!
So be good little boys and girls, and wait patiently for the film to open May 1!

Officials at an Australian visual effects company have denied responsibility for the leak of the new X-Men prequel, which found its way onto the Internet this week (beg30Mar09) - a month before it is due to hit cinemas.
Bosses at the 20th Century Fox film studio were furious when a full-length print of X-Men Origins: Wolverine began appearing illegally on websites on Tuesday night.
Studio executives took immediate action to remove the Hugh Jackman picture from the web, vowing to force prosecution on the culprit.
And attention subsequently turned to Aussie special effects firm Rising Sun Pictures, whose company logo appears in a caption a few minutes into the leaked copy.
But Rising Sun chairman and co-founder Tony Clark has now come forward to distance his company from the Internet mishap, insisting that although his employees did work on the picture, it is not possible for them to put the entire content online.
He says in a statement, "As we worked on individual sequences within the film, neither Rising Sun Pictures or its staff members have ever been in possession of a full-length version, so it would have been impossible for the movie to have been leaked from here."
Detectives at America's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are currently looking into the case.

Twentieth Century Fox is narrowing down its list of suspects they believe responsible for leaking an unfinished version of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" to the Internet last week. But an Australian special effects studio, Rising Sun Pictures, says no fingers should be pointed its way, despite the fact its logo appears in some of the scenes. "We worked on individual sections of the film and Rising Sun Pictures or its staff members have never been in possession of a complete version," Tony Clark, chairman of Rising Sun, said in a statement. "It's common practice for work in progress between us and the production to carry vendor watermarks, and for these to be integrated into various edits of the film for screenings, which would explain why our name appears." Tom Rothman, the chairman of ...
