“Avenue 5″ has crash-landed. The Armando Iannucci science fiction comedy series has been canceled at HBO after two seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.
The news comes almost three months after the show wrapped its second season in November. The series, led by Hugh Laurie, originally premiered in January 2020.
“Going to space with Armando Iannucci has been an incredible journey,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to IndieWire. “While we will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Avenue 5,’ we look forward to many more adventures together.”
“Avenue 5” starred Laurie and Josh Gad as the captain and owner of the titular interplanetary cruise ship. Set in 2060, the show also featured Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Ethan Phillips as the various employees and passengers onboard Avenue 5. Jay Lycurgo, who plays Nathan in upcoming Netflix series “The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself,” finds himself interrogated by witch Celia (Karen Connell) in a new clip from the show, shared exclusively with Variety.
In the series, which is based on the Half Bad YA series by Sally Green, Lycurgo plays the teenage, illegitimate son of Marcus, considered the world’s most dangerous witch.
At the beginning of the series, with the witch community fearing Nathan takes after his father, he is constantly monitored. In the tense scene above a witch called Celia interrogates him, asking him how he is sleeping at night, whether he has violent dreams, if he is quick to anger and whether he feels any negative feelings towards other witches – at which point she notices a bleeding cut on Nathan’s hand appear to heal up.

Exclusive: Avenue 5‘s space voyage may be coming to an end. Season 2 of Armando Iannucci’s space comedy, delayed by the pandemic, has not been scheduled yet. I hear it will likely launch in the fall and is expected to be the series’ last. A rep for HBO declined comment.
This is not surprising. Season 1 of Avenue 5, Iannucci’s followup series to the Emmy-winning Veep, premiered in January 2020 and was renewed for a second season in February of that year, just a couple of weeks before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Filming on the new season, delayed by Covid, finally got underway in August 2021 and wrapped in November.
Given the time that has passed, the options on the cast, led by Hugh Laurie, came up, and the actors were released, sources tell Deadline. Some of them have moved on, signing as series regulars on new shows.

HBO has renewed the Hugh Laurie-headlined chaotic space comedy, Avenue 5, for a second season.
Avenue 5 Season 2 is officially on HBO’s proverbial cruise itinerary.
While the freshman HBO sci-fi comedy series, the latest brainchild of Veep creator Armando Ianucci, crosses the midway point of its January 19-launched nine-episode inaugural season, the premium cable channel has seen enough from it to greenlight Avenue 5 for a second season. The outer-space ensemble series, set 40 years in the future, is headlined by former House star (and Veep vet) Hugh Laurie, who plays Ryan Clark, the figurehead actor captain of the titular leisure space vessel that, due to a disaster, is forced to endure a three-year voyage home.
As Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, expresses in a statement:

Veep creator Armando Iannucci wanted to tap into the “madness of crowds” and populism for his latest project. But instead of setting up another political comedy, he decided to set it in space.
Iannucci, who also created BBC comedy The Thick of It, was at the Winter TCA press tour alongside the cast of the HBO show including Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rebecca Front, Lenora Crichlow, Suzy Nakamura and Ethan Phillips.
“I knew after doing ten years of Veep and The Thick of It, I knew I didn’t want to do another political show,” he said. “There’s an air of uncertainty [in the world]… and a sense of foreboding doom and no one is doing anything about it. Avenue 5, we are go for launch. One day after its Sunday night veteran Silicon Valley wrapped its run, HBO said today that its new comedy from Veep creator Armando Iannucci starring Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad will lift off at 10 p.m. Sunday, January 19.

HBO released the first trailer for “Avenue 5,” the new space comedy from “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci.
Set 40 years in the future, “Avenue 5” stars Hugh Laurie as Ryan Clark, the confident and suave captain of a space cruise ship that has luxury amenities like gourmet buffets, a spa, an observation deck and yoga classes. As shown in the trailer, however, things don’t go exactly according to plan.
Avenue 5’s eight-week journey around Saturn is interrupted when the ship suddenly encounters technical difficulties, and it’s up to Ryan and his crew to calm the disgruntled passengers and find a way to deal with unexpected events onboard – though they may or may not be equipped for the task.

If spy flicks are your thing, look no further - Guy Ritchie is back with his hotly-anticipated reboot The Man from Uncle – a stylised take on the '60s television series.
There are stunts and sharp suits aplenty, and Henry Cavill makes himself a favourite for the soon-to-become vacant James Bond role with his performance, but what did critics make of the film?
Digital Spy has rounded up a selection of reviews for The Man from Uncle below:
Digital Spy
Guy Ritchie's The Man from Uncle offers a fizzy antidote to 007's deep psychological probing… There are plenty of stunts snazzily directed by Ritchie with zip and '60-style split-screen - not too overdone - matching the gloss and dynamism of his Sherlock Holmes movies. But, bigger doesn't always means brasher; the set-pieces don't rival the best spectacle that the Bond series has to offer – although the double entendres are sometimes as crass.

Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law returns as his formidable colleague, Dr Watson, in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
A new trailer (see below) has been issued for the film, due out on December 16, along with some character posters, which are included here with the official synopsis. The trailer is also in our video channel on the right of the page.
Official synopsis
Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room...until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large - Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) - and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective.
When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide.

If you are noticing an increase in movie trailers appearing online it can only mean one thing, the holidays are just around the corner. We begin our new day with Guy Richie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows starring the ever charismatic Robert Downey Jr and the very cool Jude Law playing as Sherlock Holmes and Watson. You can also expect to see Noomi Rapace (Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Jared Harris (Mad Men) as the primary villain Dr. Moriarty. There is also a tiny glimpse or two of Rachel McAdams starring in the new action movie before the end of 2011.
The newest trailer has condensed a lot of the action we will be seeing in the two and half minute run, but there are some banter scenes between Holmes and Watson, and you do get to see the wild antics of Holmes as well.

As we're already halfway through October, we'll soon see a deluge of new marketing materials for films being released in the coveted holiday window. Kicking things off is a new trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. This one uses all the same light comedy and heavy speed ramping that was in the first trailer, and confirms that Rachel McAdams returns for at least a cameo. (Unless that is new co-star Noomi Rapace disguised as McAdams, which seems unlikely.) No glimpse of Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes, sadly, but we do get to see more of Jared Harris (Mad Men) as arch-villan Dr. Moriarty. The trailer doesn't show us a lot more of the interaction between Holmes and Watson (Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law) beyond what we saw in previous video, choosing instead to emphasize action. Check it out below and try to determine whether...

With such an insanely packed Christmas, I honestly keep forgetting that a sequel to Guy Ritchie‘s 2009 hit Sherlock Holmes is coming out. Although it was well-received and did fantastic at the box office up against Avatar, I wasn’t a fan due to the completely unengaged story and reliance on unnecessary flourishes from Ritchie. The whole gang is back though and while the story isn’t entirely clear, it looks like our director has amped up his touch even further. It may be entertaining, but with The Adventures of Tintin, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, War Horse, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and many more all hitting theaters within a few days of this, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is close to the bottom of the list.

After a pair of posters and some cut up footage, we now have the full theatrical trailer for Guy Ritchie‘s sequel to his 2009 hit, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. There isn’t much in the way of plot in this trailer, and shows style over very little substance, the main problem I had with the first film. This one looks to be more of the same, so I have very little interest.
But I know many really dug the Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law relationship of the first, and they are up to the same thing again. This time they are joined by the original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace, as well as Jared Harris, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Fry, and Gilles Lellouche.
The trailer will be attached to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, or you can see it below via Apple.
