When Josh Napravnik moved to Madison, Wisconsin, in his twenties, he found a second home at a “delightfully grimy cash-only bar” one block from the state capitol. The Silver Dollar Tavern was a place where you could spend an afternoon doing crossword puzzles at the bar, the only spot in town that played Thursday Night Football, and where he and his friends invariably ended up at the end of a long night out, splitting pitchers of cheap beer.

Ten years ago, executive producer/creator/writer Mike Kelley rejuvenated the primetime soap opera with the ABC series Revenge. The serial drama, which debuted September 21, 2011, and quickly became a guilty pleasure, told the story of Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp), a former Hamptonite who returned to seek revenge against the wealthy Grayson family and their various hangers-on. Armed with a burning desire for justice, unlimited financial resources, and a pack of red Sharpies, Emily (born Amanda Clarke) eliminated individuals who had framed her father, David Clarke (James Tupper), for conspiring with the terrorists who brought down Flight 197, killing all 247 souls on board. Emily couldn’t account for every contingency, but the fun was watching her take control and remain two steps ahead of her adversaries—especially Victoria Grayson, played by the unparalleled Madeleine Stowe. The phone rings and it’s Mike Lindell, the MyPillow Guy, recovered cocaine addict, believer that the 2020 presidential count was 20 million off, and, apparently, a fan of 1970s Am Radio. After saying hello and introducing myself, Lindell begins howling through the telephone line, ‘Wanna see my picture on the cover, wanna buy five copies for my mother.’ He laughs loud and says, ‘You gonna put me on the cover of Rolling Stone.” I tell him it is unlikely since the story will only be online.

Today’s noir forecast is vice, kidnapping, murder, suicide, narcotics and a sleazy stolen baby racket! Kino’s third volume of Universal-International pix contains two seldom-screened quality urban noirs. Expect genuine dark themes in these sizable-budget location noirs filmed before Universal pulled most production back onto its one-size-fits-all backlot sets. Barbara Stanwyck dominates one show, while noir stalwarts Richard Conte and Dennis O’Keefe anchor the other two dramas, with dynamic showings by Coleen Gray, Edith Barrett, Peggy Dow, Jeanette Nolan, Meg Randall and especially Gale Storm.

As Showtime prepares its Emmy submissions for 2019, one of its contenders is a bit of an outlier: Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Who Is America?”
The seven-episode series, which premiered last July, mixes elements of comedy, satire, sketch, reality, talk and variety — making it the kind of hybrid that could be entered in several categories.
And that’s Showtime’s plan. Although there are unscripted elements to “Who Is America?” (such as the time Baron Cohen got Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio to address the infamous alleged Donald Trump “pee pee tape”), the network is following the precedent set by “Saturday Night Live” in splitting its major submissions in both the comedy and variety/sketch categories.
“Who Is America?” will be submitted in the outstanding variety/sketch series category, where it would potentially face shows like last year’s winner “SNL,” and previous nominees such as “Drunk History” and “At Home with Amy Sedaris.

Sacha Baron Cohen goofed on two liberal figures Sunday on “Who Is America,” trying to get Howard Dean to comment on Hillary Clinton’s gender, and asking Jill Stein about whether climate change is real.
As his character Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick, Baron Cohen brought a conspiracy theory to 2004 Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean: the question of whether Hillary Clinton is actually a man.
“Do you believe Hillary Clinton is actually a woman?” Ruddick asked Dean.

“I know, there’s lots of ideas floating around, and you know, I know her,” Dean responded.
Baron Cohen’s then showed Dean a Photoshopped image of Clinton, pointing to a portion of the image showing Clinton’s leg and asking him to explain a bulge.
“I explain that as maybe the trouser presser did a lousy job,...

Sacha Baron Cohen Reveals How Sheriff David Clarke Would Have Stopped Anti-Fascists in 1930s Germany
When it comes to fascism, controversial former Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke, a supporter of Donald Trump, would rather not take a side.
One year after the gathering of Nazi sympathizers and white supremacists in Charlottesville, Va., left civil rights activist Heather Heyer dead, Clarke appeared on Showtime’s “Who Is America?” and didn’t condemn fascism. But he did condemn anti-fascists.
In 1930s Germany, the rise of fascism brought Hitler to power, leading to World War II, the Holocaust, and the death of hundreds of thousands. Anti-fascists might have put a stop to Hitler’s reign. But that’s not who former Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke sees as a villain.
Interviewed by Cohen’s Finnish YouTube character OMGWhizzBoyOMG, Clarke said he believed anti-fascists were anarchists. “They promote chaos.”
That’s where Cohen, as OMGWhizzBoyOMG, sought some clarification:

Now in its fifth episode, Sacha Baron Cohen continues his crusade to dupe unsuspecting victims on his Showtime series Who Is America? This week’s episode didn’t include the much-anticipated interview with Sarah Palin, but it did feature interviews with former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, former Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke, and pro-gun advocate Dan Roberts.
Cohen donned his pro-Trump conspiracy theorist Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr. PhD persona to chat with Lewandowski and opened a whole can of worms when it came to Trump’s stance on race.
“I can tell you this…I had the privilege of standing next to Trump for 1,000 hours. Never ever have I heard him utter a racist word in his life,” said Lewandowski when Cohen asked him if Trump is a racist.
“The president doesn’t look at race — never has. Its a non-issue,” added Lewandowski, who is known for ridiculing...

David Clarke may have once been the sheriff of Milwaukee County, but as a guy who once told people that they should buy guns and take the law into their own hands instead of calling 911, he was less of a respectable member of the law enforcement community and more of a deranged child who liked to cosplay as one of…

Revenge picked up in "Homecoming" right where they left off in the winter finale: Emily has disappeared after being shot on the night of her wedding, by her husband Daniel.
Aiden (Barry Sloane) and Jack (Nick Wechsler) rush to try to find Emily (Emily VanCamp) after discovering her wedding dress washed up on the shore. Aiden focuses on trying to track Emily using the garter tracker she was wearing, while Jack feels increasingly guilty about forcing Emily to move up her revenge time table, which could have led to bad planning and Emily’s current injury. Aiden sends Jack to update Nolan and continues to search for Emily on his own.
Aiden Rescues Emily
Emily, injured, but alive, tried to get to a buoy where she had stashed a box away in case of emergencies, but she is too weak to grab it and ends up being picked up by a fisherman’s boat.

In this week’s Revenge, we learn that Emily’s shooting has left her with amnesia. (What, should that have been preceded by “spoiler alert”? C’mon. You never thought for a minute that there was even the remotest possibility that she was gonna die, and neither did anyone else. That said… ) In case your memory has been similarly erased by eggnog and/or champagne consumption over the holiday break, let me bring you up to speed on a bit of what happened before – and all that happens in – “Homecoming”…

The Narrow Margin
Written by Earl Felton
Directed by Richard Fleischer
USA, 1952
Single-location films can be a tough sell for some. In some instances, the location might seem too preposterous to be the setting for an entire story, thus creating a sense that the project is based on a gimmick. It requires some considerable storytelling prowess to properly convey the reasons why characters would remain in said location if dangers lurk around every corner, and to create new, plausible threats to keep the interest level high. Trains as single-location settings present some interesting challenges. They offer its passengers the opportunity to peruse its in and outs in many ways, not all of which offer a lot of breathing room. Richard Fleischer turned out to be one such director capable of taking full advantage of the setting with 1952’s The Narrow Margin.

Jay and Silent Bob talk to Australian fans in their new special

Casting has begun for someone to play Wonder Woman in the CW pilot Amazon (with a script written by faboo Young Avengers creator Allan Heinberg) and Deadline has the breakdown on the iconic heroine. I'm continuing to feel optimistic about this adaptation, even if the heroine is named Iris (Iris?) and her background doesn't exactly sound like Themyscira.
Did anyone watch and enjoy Call the Midwife? I don't mean that sarcastically, I never had the time to check it out. For you fans, the BBC announced there's a second season and a Christmas special in the works.
CNN has named former NBC chief Jeff Zucker — who's largely remembered as the man who took NBC from Friends to The Jay Leno Show — as president of the troubled news channel. The development has inspired speculation and suggestions on how...
