It doesn’t seem possible that it was around 30 years ago that A Flock of Seagulls ran so far away or Modern English melted with us, but it was. The story behind those acts, their biggest hits, and dozens of other New Wave acts are captured in all their ‘80s bad hairdo-ed, brightly colored-glory in “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s.” Written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, with a forward by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and an afterward by Moby, the book examines the New Wave era through the filter of 36 songs associated with the time, such as Gary Numan’s “Cars,” Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film” and The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” Each chapter deals with one act and, while not limited to the group’s biggest hit, explores the story behind that tune and the...

Alison Moyet despairs of "lazy comparisons" that put her side by side with Adele - "purely for the fact that we were two fat girls singing torch songs. It always happens."
The former Yazoo singer, whose album 'the minutes' has been released to huge plaudits this week, presents her evidence with the language she hears on TV talent shows...
Alison Moyet is back, and happier with her sound than ever
"If you watch 'X Factor', every time a fat girl came on, it was 'the next Alison Moyet'," she explains. "Now it's 'the next Adele'. It doesn't hurt me, but I think it's like categorising two gay actors together, or ginger-haired men... it's just silly categorising.
"I do get that we're both stationary performers, but there'll be a talented man, with an electronic background, who has much more in common with me, musically. Or even Pj Harvey...

It’s only fitting that Yaz’s “Only You” closes out the final season premiere of “Fringe”. Written by Vince Clarke, who many will know from his work in Depeche Mode and Erasure, “Only You” is a synthesizer-based ballad. In other words, it creates beauty from inside the cold confines of technology. That’s always been the greatest strength of “Fringe” as well. It has taken the sometimes-cold world of science fiction and imbued the genre with enough heart and emotion to fill a half-dozen other television programs. Even if the fourth season never quite generated those some emotional highs as previous years, it...

Actor and lead singer with the Flying Pickets during the early 1980s, he went on to take roles in several popular TV series, including Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale
Brian Hibbard, who has died of prostate cancer aged 65, first found fame as a member of the Flying Pickets, a group of actors who left the socialist playwright John McGrath's 7:84 theatre group to woo audiences through their a cappella singing. They topped the pop charts in 1983 with a cover version of Only You, trumping Yazoo, the duo of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke, who had reached No 2 with their original recording. This Christmas No 1 single and the group's flamboyant look – gaudy suits, large hats and Hibbard's massive sideburns – led to brief stardom for the Flying Pickets, a name coined because some of them had supported the miners during their strikes of 1972 and 1974. They hit the Top 10 again with another cover,...

Yes, the Beach House album is bringing boardwalk summers back in style. But there will be darkness: come June 5, the latest from Liars drops, Wixiw (pronounced "Wish You"), and its first single/advertisement for itself, "No. 1 Against The Rush," is doing its job pretty well so far. First there was a masterfully creepy music video, and now there's a remix from synthpop king Vince Clarke (he of Erasure, Depeche Mode, and Yaz), so yeah, eighties sonic flashback. The single releases May 28, complete with Clarke remix, one by Matmos and a new B-side. Stream Clarke's below.

As Melinda noted when the new collaboration between former Depeche Mode bandmates Martin L. Gore (who's still officially a member of the group) and Vince Clarke was first announced back in November, "Vcmg" is a pretty weak and unimaginative moniker for their little side-project. Nevertheless, they've already released one Ep titled "Spock" under the name (with a second called "Single Blip" on the way), and now they've announced details of the full-length album, which they're calling "Ssss", like, you know, a snake or whatever. It's due out on March 12th. "[Vcmg] marks the long awaited reunion of electronic pioneers Vince Clarke...

If the creativity they expressed in coming up with their band name is any indication, we’re a little worried about what we may get from Vince Clarke and Martin L. Gore’s reunion effort. The two original members of Depeche Mode are working together under the new moniker Vcmg and plan to release a series of EPs starting Nov. 30. Clarke left Depeche Mode after the British electronic band’s 1981 debut, “Speak and Spell,” and went on to form Yaz with Alison Moyet, and, more recently, Erasure with Andy Bell. Gore, who took over primary song duties following Clarke’s departure, has stayed...

Depeche Mode's Martin Gore has reunited with former member Vince Clarke for a new project. It will mark the first time the pair have worked together since Clarke left the group in 1981. They will release under the name Vcmg. Gore explained that Clarke emailed him about the idea "out of the blue". He said: "Out of the blue I got an email from Vince just saying, 'I'm interested in making a techno album. Are you interested in collaborating?'" (more)...

Erasure have unveiled details of their upcoming 14th studio album Tomorrow's World. The latest release from Vince Clarke and Andy Bell will be released on October 3, and was produced by electronic performer Frankmusik, who has previously worked with the likes of Lady GaGa, Pet Shop Boys and Ellie Goulding. Vince Clarke revealed: "We chose Frank because he is someone who has a different approach to the music, who is sympathetic to synthesizers, and incredibly keen." The album's lead single, 'When I Start To (Break It (more)...

Goldfrapp have announced details of their new single and upcoming tour. The electro duo's new song will be 'Believer', the third cut to be taken from their fifth studio album Head First. The track will include remixes from Vince Clarke, Subway, Joris Voorn and Davide Rossi. The group have also announced a tour for later this year, starting in Bristol on November 9 and wrapping (more)...
