If there was ever a match made in heaven, it was Guillermo del Toro and Disney's "The Haunted Mansion." Del Toro is a monster kid through and through. His fascination with the macabre has deep literary and cinematic roots, to be sure. He can break down the gothic artistry of Mary Shelley's writing or grapple with the problematic side of H.P. Lovecraft with as much intelligence and passion as the most respected college professor.
But del Toro's passion for genre goes way beyond the intellectual. It's his whole heart, which you can see in everything he's ever produced. He has a childlike love of ghosts and monsters and anything spooky, so of course he was the right person for Disney to hire to try to make a real version of "The Haunted Mansion" back in 2010.
His particular adaptation had a long history of stops and starts before he eventually departed the project,...

Disney has adapted its theme park attractions into movies several times, and with varying degrees of success. Everyone remembers "Pirates of the Caribbean," but the "Country Bears" movie from 2002 left a significantly smaller cultural footprint. Same with "The Haunted Mansion," the Eddie Murphy comedy from 2003. Now Disney is coming back for a second bite at the apple with the slightly differently titled "Haunted Mansion," written by Katie Dippold ("Parks and Recreation") and directed by Justin Simien ("Dear White People"), in an attempt to capitalize on the familiarity of the brand while capturing what makes that attraction so special.
But what exactly does make that Disney staple so special? If you polled theme park fans, none of them would blink if you called it the greatest theme park ride of all time. And if you asked Disney Imagineers -- the folks who actually design and build Disney theme park attractions -- why it's so special,...

Creepy and goofy are not mutually exclusive experiences. The mood of Disney's iconic Haunted Mansion ride is the result of a disagreement between two Imagineers, Marc Davis and Claude Coats, in the '60s. Coats wanted to make something genuinely scary. Davis wanted the attraction to be more fun. In the end, the Haunted Mansion is both; the mansion is brimming with silly gags, but still runs chills up guests' spines using a flurry of technological and illusory wonders.
In 1969, three years after Walt Disney's death, the long-incubating Haunted Mansion project reached completion at the California-based Disneyland, then sprouted its own iterations...

3Rd Update, Monday, 5:28 Pm: Most of the major studios have not reported their Monday actuals, as is customary due to the holidays. Warner Bros, Sony and Relativity are still off this week, which means Rentrak won’t issue a final report until January 5. What we do know, though, is that Disney’s Into The Woods beat Universal’s Unbroken by the hair of its chinny-chin-chin over the Christmas Week frame.
Some distribs marveled yesterday why Into The Woods, a PG film, didn’t beat Unbroken, which is largely adult-driven. Woods wound up posting a better Sunday thanks to matinees of $8.2M vs. Unbroken‘s $7.5M. Nonetheless, both films have driven a ton of biz to the year-end box office, with each exceeding $46M in their four-day openings. Rentrak currently sees the total weekend at $208.9M, still up 6% over last year’s comparable frame of $196.9M. The 2014 B.O. is at $10.22B,...

On October 16, 1923, Walt Disney and brother Roy signed a contract with Margaret Winkler to make a series of animated cartoons called Alice Comedies. What was then known as The Disney Brothers Studio eventually became The Walt Disney Company, a multi-billion dollar creative force crossing movies, TV, video games and theme parks.
With Disney celebrating its 90th birthday today, we here at Digital Spy are marking this momentous anniversary by picking out our favourite Disney movies. Disney has produced and released an eclectic range of films crossing classic animation (see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), live-action blockbusters (Tron, Pirates of the Caribbean) and trail-blazing Pixar offerings (Toy Story, Wall-e).
Without further delay, here are 13 movies from the Disney back catalogue that we absolutely adore...

Until their 34th animated feature, Disney had been primarily focused on fun, family-friendly kid fare. Happy musicals, with lovable characters and handsome or beautiful protagonists saving the day. Stories like Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty filled their filmography, with only the occasional The Black Cauldron. However, it wasn’t until 1996, with the release of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, that Disney finally released a truly different film. Unlike their previous works, Hunchback was a film with real emotion that dealt with more mature topics such as religion, damnation, and cruelty. Yet it was still able to remain an enjoyable kids movie due to the pompous musical numbers and child-friendly humor.

Today I finally felt like I was hitting my stride. I found a parking place on the street this early Sunday morning and made my 8:30am screening of What They Don't Talk About When They Talk About Love which takes place in a special school for the mute, deaf and blind in Indonesia. A series of love stories told with a gentleness most easily summarized by one of its characters, Boys love what they see and girls love what they hear. The film is a sweet look — not always innocent — at love inside this special school, told with a narrative style and rhythm dictated by its actors being mostly blind, deaf or mute. Kiril Razlogov, Artistic Director of the Moscow Film Festival, and I had a great long talk about Russia, the new Ministry of Culture and how film fits into its political system and what is happening today with Russian films as we walked to the Glbt annual brunch at the Grub Steak (I can no longer recall who sponsors this I have been going to it for such a long time) I had thought it started at 10am but at 10:30am the line to get in was down the block and no one was going in until 11am, so we made our own party greeting those in line whom we knew. It was great to see Marie from Wolfe Releasing along with her colleague and to hear about the great response they have been getting internationally to their online movies. Kiril and she discussed Russian films and digital delivery. She is still deciding whether to go to Berlin as she is so busy at the home office. I looked for Jenny Olsen whom I always see there if no where else but she was not there yet. We visited with a few other friends and acquaintances and then Kiril and I parted ways as he went to see a film (he's concentrating on seeing the U.S. Films and I'm concentrating on international and particularly Latino and Eastern European films). I went to interview director Sebastian Silva whose Old Cats was in Sundance 2009 and The Maid which won the Dramatic Jury Award here in 2011 and whose film Crystal Fairy so impressed me this year. I will write about this wonderful interview after I have seen the second film he has here, Magic Magic, produced by Frida Torresblanco and Christine Vachon. My discussion after the interview with producer rep and publicist, Stephen Raphael of Required Viewing, who also happens to have been born in Chile, about the film's producers, Fabula, the company of Pablo and Claude Lorrain (No, Tony Manero) and the line producer who also line produced Il Futuro, the Chile-Italian coproduction film I also saw today verged on the weird for the number of coincidences and inter-relationships. The oddest coincidence was that while Stephen was awaiting his two Chilean clients to arrive at Sundance from Santiago, his luggage was lost and they discovered it had been sent mistakenly to Santiago! Between films I went to parties: UCLA / The Wrap party where I did not see Teri Schwartz, Dean of the UCLA film school or Sharon Waxman of The Wrap, Texas Party, but I was unable to squeeze in the Ida cocktail to which Laurie Ann Schag of Netflix and the the Ida Treasurer invited me as I had to run back to the Holiday Village to see The World According to Dick Cheney, a 110 minute life saga of this man who ran our government into the ground as told by himself, a man unable to think of a single fault in his own character when asked the question along with other questions about himself, all of which he could answer with a flawless alacrity – except for that one. He could only conclude that his only fault was not being able to name one. I went to see the Serbian film Circles at the urging of my friend Geno Lechner who played the wife of the protagonist. The fault of this film was in identifying characters 12 years after a horrible incident that took place among the characters which determined the story. I still do not know who was who and yet I understood the relevance of the story very much, especially because I was just in Sarajevo for the Festival and Talent Campus this summer and loved it so very much. This played out the tragedy of a man whose good deed in saving a Muslim cigarette vendor in Croatia during the Serbian Croatia War created circles of greater import like a stone which is dropped in the water. Finally, I changed my mind from seeing Wajma to going with the flow and seeing Escape from Tomorrow which is receiving lots of press because of possible copyright infringement of Walt Disney's IP. This surreal comedy of a man going insane at Disneyland or Disney World left me feeling dizzy and surreal myself. I think it is good as a work of art but without any commercial potential. I think, like the Barbie Doll enactment of the Karen Carpenter Story so many years ago, Sundance may be the only chance for anyone to see this film. With that as my finale for the evening, I drove home feeling disoriented to meet a depressed Harlan who had been unable to procure any tickets for the evening screenings. For having done a full day's work without a flaw, the evening's films and lack thereof left the two of us out of sorts. Oh well, there's always tomorrow, but I'm already undecided about whether to attend Acme PR's inaugural breakfast or go to see The Lifeguard. I've had enough docs on political issues and so will skip 99% The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film. There is always so much to do that no matter what you choose, you wonder if you should be somewhere else; that is the dilemma of these festivals with so many choices! See you tomorrow!

Disney animated films aren’t all sweetness and light. Here’s our list of the studio’s 11 darkest moments…
Despite the studio being synonymous with wholesome family fun, Disney’s animated classics are rife with dark and unsettling moments. The kind of moments where you can’t help but think, “Crikey, this is a bit intense for a kid’s film!”
These are the moments which prompt you to look back to your own childhood, and remember nights of disturbed sleep and those confused questions to parents like, “Simba’s dad will come back in the end won’t he mum?”
Some of these scenes are deliberately meant to be scary, some are uncharacteristically dreary, but some make the list purely due to their disturbing nature. Regardless of what makes such a scene so dark, there’s one thing that connects them: they are all among the most memorable in Disney’s impressive canon.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Boccaccio ’70 (1962)
Synopsis: Four legendary filmmakers direct some of Europe’s biggest stars in Boccaccio ’70, a landmark anthology film. Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico Fellini (8½), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more through four stories of unashamed eros. Modeled on Boccaccio’s Decameron, they are comic moral tales about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy. Monicelli’s “Renzo e Luciana” (cut out of the original American release) is a frothy tale of young love and office politics in the big city. Fellini’s notorious “Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio” features Ekberg as a busty model in a milk advertisement whose image begins to haunt an aging prude. Visconti’s “Il Lavoro” stars Romy Schneider as a trophy wife enduring her husband’s very public affairs,...

A little over two years ago, AfterElton.com brought readers a list of the 37 Hottest Guys in Theater, and since then, the New York Stage has only become increasingly sexified. The lines between Broadway and Hollywood continue to blur, and as young men come to recognition in NYC, they're often quickly whisked away to Tinseltown to showcase not only their amazing talent, but often they're breathtaking good looks.
While it's tempting to include every Hollywood hottie who graces the stage on this list (a certain Lee Pace and Luke Macfarlane spring to mind), the point here is to honor the men who are mostly known for rockin' the live stages here in New York.
And so, without further ado, we present, in alphabetical order, the list (39!) of this year's hottest guys in theater!

The first great Walt Disney Pictures movie based on one of it’s legendary park rides was Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and director Guillermo del Toro is working on a live-action film based on Disney’s Haunted Mansion, that will thankfully not be a comedy.
Now, the LATimes reports that Walt Disney Pictures is working on a new film that will be based on a planned park attraction that actually never made it into existence at Disney’s parks called, The Museum of the Weird. The project is being written by Ahmet Zappa.
The Museum of the Weird was being put together by longtime Disneyland imagineers Rolly Crump and Claude Coats. The proposed walk-through attraction was originally meant to sit adjacent to The Haunted Mansion, complete with its own restaurant, and promised to showcase ghostly organists, magical carts, talking chairs and other surreal and odd exhibits.

Disney has announced that it is developing a movie based on the abandoned attraction The Museum of the Weird. However, Disney now plans to take the abandoned attraction and turn it into a movie. The attraction was conceived by Claude Coats and Rolly Crump, the same men behind The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. The Museum of the Weird was designed (more)...

The cool thing about this new Disney film project is that it's based on a Disney theme park attraction that was never brought to life, The Museum of the Weird.
Disney is rocking the mouse house with films based on their theme park attractions. It all started with Pirates of the Caribbean, now Guillermo del Toro is making a Haunted Mansion movie, there's a film based on Tomorrowland, The Enchanted Tiki Room is rumored to be in the works, and another one based on the whole theme park experience called Magic Kingdom, which is being directed by Jon Favreau. Now the studio is adapting theme park attractions that have never been built.
The Museum of the Weird was an idea that Walt Disney was interested in perusing back in the 1960's, but it never got off the ground. 50 years later the idea has started on the road to being brought back to life.

Eventually, there will be no Disney theme park attraction, real or imagined, that doesn't hit a movie screen. Pirates of the Caribbean was only the beginning. Guillermo del Toro has a deal [1] to make a Haunted Mansion film (a new one, that is, but not a sequel) and Jon Favreau will direct [2] the Night at the Museum-like Magic Kingdom. Now The Museum of the Weird, an attraction that was planned but never built, is edging towards development. The La Times [3] reports that Disney is talking with Ahmet Zappa about writing a film based on the planned attraction. (He's also writing a Tiki-themed film that might have taken inspiration from the Enchanted Tiki Room.) What was the idea behind Museum of the Weird? Rolly Crump and Claude Coats designed the Museum of the Weird with the idea of spotlighting a parade of ghostly organists, magic carts, talking chairs and other surreal exhibits.

That’s weird. Disney has created storylines based on its own theme park attractions. Now an attraction that Disney never built could actually become a movie. “The Museum of the Weird” is an attraction that Walt Disney liked himself back in the 1960s, but never was developed. According to Los Angeles Times, Disney is in discussion with screenwriter Ahmet Zappa to adapt the attraction’s ideas into a full length movie. The original attraction design was to spotlight a parade of ghostly organists, magic carts, talking chairs and other surreal exhibits. The design was from the Disney theme-park creators Rolly Crump and Claude Coats. It was to be built next to the Haunted Mansion with a restaurant, but the more ambitious pieces were incorporated into the mansion instead, according to the La Times. The La Times wrote, “Zappa’s idea is for the museum to be refashioned as a film...

If you've ever been traveling, you know just about every state has a museum of the weird and wild somewhere along its roads. Except, of course, for the great city of Austin, Texas, which is proud to be weird everywhere all year round. Still, if anyone could pull off the mother of all weird museums, it would most likely be Disney. And a little help from Frank Zappa's son wouldn't hurt either.
According to the La Times Disney is in discussions for a movie based on the museum with screenwriter Ahmet Zappa.
A half-century ago, well-known Disney theme park creators Rolly Crump and Claude Coats designed the "Museum of the Weird" with the idea of spotlighting a parade of ghostly organists, magic carts, talking chairs and other surreal exhibits. Walt Disney wanted to use the museum as an adjunct to the Haunted Mansion, complete with its own restaurant. But the museum was never built,...

Ever since the success of their theme-park-ride-turned-live-action-feature Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney has been working diligently at turning their other rides into films. The idea is that the movie's success will bring people into the parks, a sort of reverse promotion if you will. Plenty of rides are being developed, but this one is sort of left field as The Museum Of The Weird, an idea that Walt Disney liked back in the 1960's but that never got off the ground, looks to be headed for the development pipeline. Disney is in discussions for a movie based on the museum with screenwriter Ahmet Zappa (son of Frank), reports the La Times. Jon Favreau will not be returning to direct Iron Man 3. He confirmed the news himself this afternoon via Twitter after Vulture got the internet buzzing earlier in the day. Instead of opting to complete the superhero trilogy, Favreau will helm Magic Kingdom for Disney as his follow-up to his upcoming July release, Cowboys and Aliens.
Favreau tweeted only a few minutes ago saying, "It's true, I'm directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I've had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best."
It was only a week ago Favreau was spilling the beans on what he understood Marvel's plans were for the future of the franchise telling MTV, "Kevin Feige, who's been involved with superhero movies with Marvel movies since the X-Men films, is very aware of his path and how to weave [things together], so in theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor,...

Welcome back to the second part of this countdown of the most overlooked songs from Disney animated films. I will continue this list with seven additional entries, whereas the third part will feature the top ten (ranked). As always, not everyone will agree with my choices, so post away in the comments section to let your voice be heard. Let’s begin!
“After Today” (A Goofy Movie)
A nostalgic film that captures the excitement of growing up as a teenager in the 90s, A Goofy Movie is a father-and-son story at its heart, showing Max and dad Goofy bond as they experience misadventures on their wild road trip. The first song, “After Today,” follow Max as he journeys to school on the first day of the year. What makes this tune so catchy are the numerous pop culture references, amusing characters that chime in every now and then, and a feel-good melody.

You might have noticed the coverage of this years ultra-sized Fantasia film festival in the Reviews and Interviews column of the site from a number of contributors taking in the festival: Mack, Shelagh, Peter, Todd, and myself, as well as a plethora of other Twitch writers hither and yon. Covering a festival of this size is a massive undertaking and I hope you enjoyed all the updates, interviews, and reviews. Rest assured there are still a few more to come. As Fantasia winds down with a screening of Metropolis Extended Edition and full orchestra, it seems to have been a raging success this year across the board. The festival announced its Jury and Audience awards, and they are below. It seems that the Subversive Serbia sidebar was a big hit, with controversial A Serbian Film getting one of the big audience awards.

Guillermo Del Toro has announced that he’s going to write and produce a new The Haunted Mansion movie. Actually, at one moment, we all thought that he’ll be in charge for directing the whole thing as well, but guess that now that’s not an option, since he said:
“Only producing and co-writing with Matthew Robbins for now. I would love to direct it if the timing allows it but I already have the next directing project ready to be announced in a week or so. Big and unexpected and full of invention.
Haunted Mansion is, however, so perfect- because into it I can finally pour decades- most of my life-of admiration and veneration for Rolly Crump, Marc Davis and Claude Coats and the incredibly stylized and impossibly cool world they created.
The movie I am imagining and that I dream of bringing forth is a full-on shrine...

Hey gang! Yesterday it was announced that director Guillermo del Toro was going to develop a new horror film for Disney based on the classic Hunted Mansion ride. The movie will obviously be called, The Haunted Mansion. This time around it looks like we are actually going to get a nice old finished horror film, and who better to that then Del Toro? I think it's okay for everyone to get excited about this movie because it's going to be nothing like that crappy Eddie Murphy version. I think it's very cool that Disney is letting Del Toro make this! The kid in me can't help but be incredibly excited.
Here's a full transcript of what Del Toro said at the Comic-Con panel:
I went to Disneyland the first time when I was three years old, and I was a lump of fat about this big. And I fortunately was...

The saying goes that the hero of your story is only as great as your villain, On podcast #124 I made a bold statement that the key difference between classic Disney movies and Pixar films is their villains. I love Pixar films, but in my mind classic Disney movies like The Jungle Book and The Lion King are still superior films, principally because they all have the missing ingredient Pixar lacks; iconic, classic and memorable villains. Pixar films are anything but weak, some credit must go towards the heroic characters who inspire courage, hope and charm their ways into our hears, but the same can't be said about the Pixar characters whose job it is to create havoc and fear with their malicious deeds. Whether you love or hate Disney, it cannot be denied that they have come up with some greatest on screen villains in movie-making history. Here is my...
