“Zone of Interest” director Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech was a mistake, “Son of Saul” director László Nemes said. Though he praised Glazer’s film as “an important movie,” Nemes told The Guardian in a statement that Glazer “should have stayed silent.”
In Glazer’s speech, he said that he and producer James Wilson “stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza.”
Nemes explained in full, “‘The Zone of Interest’ is an important movie. It is not made in a usual way. It questions the grammar of cinema. Its director should have stayed silent instead of revealing he has no understanding of history and the forces undoing civilization, before or after the Holocaust.”

László Nemes, the director of acclaimed Holocaust film Son of Saul, has spoken out against the speech made by the The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer, when he accepted his Oscar last weekend.
Glazer has ignited support but also a huge backlash with his speech, in which he said he and his producer James Wilson “stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza.”
Now Nemes, who won the foreign language award in 2015 for his film about the Holocaust, Son of Saul, writes in The Guardian newspaper:
“The Zone of Interest is an important movie… Its director should have stayed silent instead of revealing he has no understanding of history and the forces undoing civilisation, before or after the Holocaust.

Danny Cohen, executive producer of Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama The Zone Of Interest, has said he “fundamentally disagrees” with the director’s politically-orientated Oscars acceptance speech.
Accepting the International Feature Oscar last Sunday, Glazer spoke at length and highlighted what he described as the shared ideology behind the film’s subject matter and contemporary world events.
“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present — not to say, ‘Look what they did then,’ rather, ‘Look what we do now.’ Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It shaped all of our past and present,” Glazer said.

The BBC has bowed to a torrent of pressure from Jewish staffers and groups by cutting scenes of an Apprentice contestant from the You’re Fired companion show following antisemitic tweets.
Controversial contestant Dr Asif Munaf’s scenes are understood to have been recorded over the weekend but will not be shown on the upcoming companion show.
BBC staffers are said to have been “shocked” by the decision to have filmed the scenes. A Telegraph report last month revealed that Munaf had been given diversity training after making antisemitic posts on social media including writing that Zionists are a “godless satanic cult” and references to the “trial of the zionist antichrist.”
At the time, a BBC source told The Telegraph, “had this content been posted before filming took place, Asif would not have been included in the show.”

Exclusive: The BBC director general has held “listening meetings” with staff as the British broadcaster seeks to address internal unrest over perceived bias in its coverage of the Israel-Gaza war.
Several BBC insiders said Tim Davie and other senior managers have sat down with employees in recent weeks, giving them the space to air concerns about the corporation’s output since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
Deadline can reveal that one such meeting took place on January 12, when around two dozen employees, including senior presenters, challenged Davie with allegations that the BBC was being biased against Palestinians.
Similar meetings have taken place with workers who feel the BBC’s output has been unfavorable to Israel. The Daily Telegraph reported last week that at least 22 Jewish staff members have submitted formal complaints about antisemitism and the social media activity of presenter Gary Lineker, who recently reposted (and later deleted) a call...

The film premiered this year at Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix, the fest’s second most prestigious award.
Based loosely on Martin Amis’ 2014 book of the same name, “The Zone of Interest” stars Christian Friedel as Rudolf and Sandra Hüller as Hedwig, along with Daniel Holzberg, Ralph Herforth and Sascha Maaz. The film was shot entirely in Poland and Germany by award-winning cinematographer Łukasz Żal.
Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman called the film “chilling and profound, meditative and immersive, a movie that holds human darkness up to the light and examines it as if under a microscope.” Gleiberman continued in his review,...

Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White are putting their bodies on full display for “The Iron Claw.” The “High School Musical” icon and “The Bear” breakout star play brothers Kevin and Kerry Von Erich, Aka the Texas Tornado. “Triangle of Sadness” actor Harris Dickinson portrays David Von Erich, with “Mindhunter” star Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, Emmy nominee Maura Tierney as matriarch Doris, and Lily James as Kevin’s wife Pam. Vertical is shifting the theatrical release of Rebecca Miller’s romantic comedy “She Came to Me” by a week. The film, which stars Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei, will open on Oct. 6 instead of Sept. 29, when it was originally slated to premiere. Vertical opted to change its release strategy after Apple decided to move the opening of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” to later in the month. “She Came to Me” was granted an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which means that the cast will be able to do promotional activity around its release despite the fact that actors are on strike against major studios and streamers.
“In light of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ release date shift, we jumped at the opportunity for the Oct. 6 date for ‘She Came to Me,'” Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey commented. “It is a competitively less crowded weekend which...

Peter Dinklage takes creative inspiration from a sexual experience with Marisa Tomei amid marital struggles between himself and Anne Hathaway in the first trailer for She Came to Me.
Rebecca Miller (Maggie’s Plan) wrote and directed the romantic-comedy film that hits theaters Sept. 29 from Vertical Entertainment. The feature centers on an opera composer (Dinklage) who is married to a therapist (Hathaway) and has a fling with a tugboat captain (Tomei), which leads to a professional breakthrough for him. Brian d’Arcy James and Joanna Kulig also star.
“I’m suffering from a temporary blockage at the moment,” Dinklage says in the footage. Later in the trailer, Tomei tells him, “I was really angry at you, and now it turns out I’m your muse.”
She Came to Me counts Danny Cohen, Amanda Ghost and Vince Holden as executive producers. Hathaway, Miller, Len Blavatnik, Damon Cardasis, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon are producers.

Jonathan Glazer’s chilling Holocaust portrait “The Zone of Interest” received a six-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival this year — and eventually its Grand Jury Prize.
IndieWire now exclusively shares the A24 film’s release date, set for a limited opening on December 8 in time for awards season. A24 also shares two new images from the film featuring Christian Friedel as Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and Sandra Hüller as his wife and accomplice Hewdig Höss. At that same Cannes, Hüller also starred in Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall.”
The film’s official synopsis belies what’s going on under the surface, as Rudolf and Hedwig “strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden” directly adjacent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where Höss was the longest-serving chief commander.

Courtney Barnett has big plans for the rest of 2023. The Australia singer-songwriter has crafted a new instrumental album called End of the Day, out September 8th, as well as a brief North American tour in which she’ll perform one set of the new songs and one set of tracks from her back catalog.
The music in End of the Day began as a group of compositions Barnett wrote with her longtime collaborator, Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, for the score to Danny Cohen’s 2021 Barnett documentary Anonymous Club. A year later, however, the artist found herself coming back to the brief improvisations, and decided to turn them into something more cohesive. The resulting album comprises 17 tracks Barnett tweaked and re-recorded into one seamless work.
An instrumental album already offers a change in artistry for Barnett, who became a critical darling in the 2010s for her brand of lyrical, almost spoken-word indie rock.

In The Art of Documentary, host and Oscar-nominee Jim LeBrecht takes listeners — and potential documentarians — on a journey with six filmmakers, who reveal not just what drew them to the medium but how they’re helping to reshape it.
The executive producer and sound engineer, best known for co-directing the Oscar-nominated disability rights doc Crip Camp with Nicole Newnham, kicks off each of the six episodes of the Film Academy original podcast by asking his guests about the incident that lit their fuse as documentarians. In the conversations that ensue, the filmmakers — Danny Cohen (Anonymous Club), Bing Liu (All These Sons), Chase Joynt and Aisling Chin-Yee (No Ordindary Man), Kirsten Johnson (Cameraperson), Garrett Bradley (Time) and Roger Ross Williams (Life, Animated) —unpack how their unique perspectives and identities shape their creative narratives and careers.
The discussions yield insights into how far documentary has come from its often exploitative cinéma vérité roots.
