It is a Thursday morning and Nick Cave – tanned and beautifully suited – is receiving the press in the upstairs room of a charming gastropub in Brighton's Kemptown. Born in Australia and variously resident over the years in Berlin, London and São Paulo, he has spent the past decade becoming one of the seaside town's most celebrated residents. Rock king Cave, as the local paper persists in referring to him when he makes its pages, seems remarkably visible around the town, perhaps because – nothing if not a proper pop star – he declines to dress down. The present writer once saw him in Diy superstore Homebase, dressed almost exactly as he is now: some years ago, a...

In a fallout from last month’s announcement that FremantleMedia North America CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz will replace Tony Cohen as CEO of parent company FremantleMedia, FremntleMedia’s COO Gary Carter has resigned. Carter, who has worked for FremantleMedia since 2005, had been widely tipped for the CEO job. He will now help with the transition to the new CEO before leaving at the end of the year. Carter oversees FremantleMedia’s European operations; serves as the chief creative officer of Fmx, the company’s experimental cross-platform division; and heads Creative Networks, which consists of FremantleMedia’s Worldwide Drama and Worldwide Entertainment departments. “Since joining FremantleMedia, I have been fortunate enough to experience many parts of this company, but believe that it is now time for me to seek out new experiences,” he said in a statement. Carter joined FremantleMedia Worldwide Entertainment in January 2005, having been a consultant for the company since August 2003. Before that,...

Cecile Frot-Coutaz, FremantleMedia North America President, and ITV director of comedy and entertainment Elaine Bedell have emerged as candidates for the job of Talkback Thames CEO. Bedell enjoys the reputation of being a toughie. At ITV she has been in charge of Talkback cash-cows The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. Yet, it’s the drama side that needs building up now that ITV has cancelled its long-running soap banker The Bill. That show contributes 40% of Talkback’s profits. Its cancellation was the reason why Talkback chairman Tony Cohen fired CEO Lorraine Heggessey last week. Simon Cowell and Sony hoover up 70% [...]...

Cannes -- Unseasonably good weather saw temperatures soaring to 86 degrees on the first day at MIPCOM on Monday, boosting the mood as buyers and sellers thronged to the balconies and terraces and business got off to a heady start.
Despite noticeably fewer attendees and areas in the far reaches of the Palais des Festivals where booth space remained unsold, business appeared to be brisk as buyers and sellers sat down to figure a way through a time when many are still finding the going tough.
"There are tough markets around the world, but those are the places where we are trying to work things out," said Ben Pyne, president of global distribution at Disney-abc Worldwide Television. "We're developing relationships that go to a different level, and it's all about problem solving.
Disney said its sci-fi drama "FlashForward" has sold to more than 100 territories, making it its fastest-growing hit to date.

Despite the tough economic realities, the mood is tipped towards optimism as the TV industry is looking to sell audiences on what it knows best: entertainment.
With a raft of exclusive performances, cocktails and parties, there is a sense that glitz and glamour is back on the Croisette, albeit as part of a pretty tough-sell as distributors go all-out to woo buyers to new shows.
Sunday night, global format giant Endemol is hosting an invitation-only chance for 600 clients to watch an hour-long set from Jerry Seinfeld to mark the debut of Endemol's global distribution business Endemol Worldwide as well as promoting such new formats as "101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow."

The royal unveiling. Yesterday, the Netherlands's Prince of Orange and Princess Maxima joined New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg to unveil the New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion in Battery Park, on the southern tip of Manhattan. The $2.3 million structure, designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, is a gift from the Dutch government to honor 400 years of friendship between the United States and the Netherlands. Princess Maxima, in a seasonal interpretation of the event's suggested dress code of "summer white," wore a discreetly sequined white skirt, a cropped cream blazer with a buttoned back, and beige suede heels with a matching clutch. After the unveiling, the Battery Conservancy held its annual benefit luncheon in a tent situated in the park's gardens, where every table was adorned with white and orange flowers from Holland. Guests lunched on treats such as heirloom-tomato tartar and lobster salad, while models, outfitted in Dutch designer Tony Cohen's Spring 2010 collection,...

CANNES -- Following the rampant success of its American Idol and a recently announced focus on the U.S. network drama market, global entertainment producer FremantleMedia took the opportunity Monday at the MIPCOM market here to announce a realigned senior management team with a greater focus on the U.S. television market. FremantleMedia CEO Tony Cohen has upped U.K. production head Alan Boyd to the newly created international role of president of worldwide entertainment, FremantleMedia Production, freeing up Los Angeles-based U.S. entertainment president David Lyle to focus exclusively on getting Fremantle shows on U.S. network television.

International television powerhouse FremantleMedia will be knocking on network doors next week offering "cost-efficient" dramas that are also proven hits in the world TV market. As part of the company's planned expansion in the U.S. drama arena, Jason Daniel has been named head of drama development at the company. "Jason will be at the forefront of our push to continue to expand our drama business in the U.S.," David Lyle, the company's entertainment president, said in announcing the appointment at a news conference Thursday in Beverly Hills. The conference was something of a show-and-tell of FremantleMedia's success during a particularly trying time for the global TV industry over the past year. Fremantle is recognized mostly for its huge stable of classic game show formats and, more recently, its hit format "American Idol", which began as "Pop Idol" in the United Kingdom. But CEO Tony Cohen stressed that the company has a broad range of genres, including hugely successful dramas, that it now will look to bring Stateside.
