Scream Factory is looking to have another great week, as they are once again dominating this Tuesday’s home media releases with their Collector’s Editions for both The Entity and Frankenstein Created Woman, as well as a stunning Steelbook Edition of Joe Dante’s Piranha. Synapse Films has also put together a Special Edition for the criminally under-appreciated Slaughter of the Innocents, we’re also getting a Steelbook for Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and for those of you who can’t get enough Ghostbusters releases, there’s a new Steelbook featuring both the first film as well as its sequel, including some unearthed footage that hadn’t been released previously.
Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for June 11th include Leprechaun Returns, Hi-Death, The 27 Club, Devil’s Kiss, Final Stab, Captain Marvel, as well as the entire limited series set for I Am the Night,...

Viewers looking (desperately) for American leaders to admire can’t do better than to reflect on John Ford’s folksy, at least partly authentic honorarium to one of the greats. Henry Fonda is 100% dead-on as a vision of Abe Lincoln to bring tears to our eyes. Imagine . . . there’s such a thing as political integrity, or simply a person that puts the public good ahead of personal advantage. Criterion’s older extras are augmented with a fine new feature commentary by John Ford authority Joseph McBride.

I never was a fan of Shirley Temple, far from it. I do recall seeing most of her movies years ago. Back in the Sixties Channel 11, in St. Louis, used to have a Shirley Temple Theater on weekend afternoons. My sister Judy, for some reason, had to watch those Shirley Temple films. So I can recall seeing Bright Eyes, the Little Colonel, Heidi, Little Miss Marker and what have you.
To say I was not impressed would be a major understatement. Even as a young kid I realized there was a strict formula to Shirley’s movies, namely her sunny disposition and optimistic outlook would win over cranky old adults and straighten out bratty little kids, who were usually the villains, in her films, and that was about all.
I do recognize and respect Shirley Temple’s place in film history. She was the biggest star...
