Warner Music Group, home to the likes of Ed Sheeran, Cardi B and Bruno Mars, posted higher second-quarter revenues, even as net income fell amid “macroeconomic, currency and release slate headwinds,” the music label reported on Tuesday.
Overall revenue rose 2 percent to $1.39 billion, while net income fell 60 percent to $37 million, against $92 million in the prior-year quarter, due in part to the unfavorable impact of exchange rates on debt repayments.
Warner Music Group CEO Robert Kyncl, in remarks to analysts during a morning call, said music publishing had shown continued momentum, but recorded music revenue fell short of expectations. “We underperformed in recorded music. There’s plenty of room for improvement. And we’re addressing both company-specific and industry-wide issues,” Kyncl said.
Music revenue was undercut during the latest quarter by a lighter release schedule, exchange rate adjustments and lower ad revenue impacting the industry.

London, April 10 (Ians) The race for the Premier League title got closer as league leaders Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Liverpool.
The draw reduced Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to six points over Manchester City, who have nine games left to play, while Arsenal have eight, reports Xinhua.
After half an hour, Arsenal looked to be cruising to end a wait of over 10 years for a win at Anfield at halftime when they led through goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, but Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back for Liverpool in the 42nd minute.
Salah then missed a penalty, but Roberto Firmino’s 87th-minute penalty saved a point for Liverpool and further opened up the title race.
Erling Haaland returned to fitness with two goals as Manchester City kept up their challenge with a 4-1 win away to bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Saturday evening.

London, April 7 (Ians) There is another vital round of Premier League matches this weekend, with everything still to be decided at both the top and the bottom of the table, where everyone below 12th place Crystal Palace is in danger of the drop.
League leaders Arsenal travel to Liverpool on Sunday for what is arguably the most attractive game of the weekend. The weekend kicks off with Arsenal eight points clear of Manchester City after playing an extra game, but that lead could have been reduced to five points by the time they kick off at Anfield, reports Xinhua.
Seven consecutive league wins to make a good case for Arsenal to be favourites for this season’s title, while Liverpool’s recent performances, including a grim 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, also imply that Mikel Arteta’s side can end a wait of over 10 years for a...

Warner Music Group, home to the likes of Ed Sheeran, Cardi B and Bruno Mars, reported lower fiscal first-quarter revenue and earningsThursday as new CEO Robert Kyncl set his sights on “the next phase of our evolution,” while also highlighting “a challenging business environment.”
The latest quarter was hit by timing factors as the comparable year-ago period included an additional week, as well as foreign currency impacts.
Revenue for the quarter ending Dec. 31 fell 8 percent, or 3 percent in constant currencies, to 1.49 billion. That was driven by an 11 percent drop in recorded music (or 6 percent on a constant-currency basis) and a 5 percent decline (or 1 percent on a constant-currency basis) in digital revenue, including a 4 percent drop in streaming revenue. Though Wmg noted that was “underlying growth in total streaming revenue despite a challenged macroeconomic environment.” Music publishing revenue rose 9 percent (or 14 percent on a constant-currency basis).

After Robert Kyncl officially steps down as YouTube’s Chief Business Officer, he will dive right back into the entertainment business with a glamorous new title. Kyncl, who spent 12 years at YouTube and seven years at Netflix before that, will take over as the CEO of Warner Music Group, replacing outgoing chief Stephen Cooper.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced in August that Kyncl would abdicate his Cbo title in 2023 in order to “start the next chapter in his career.” At the time, neither Wojcicki nor Kyncl indicated where the Czech-born businessman would head next, but it didn’t take long before major businesses began bidding for his services. On September 18 — three weeks after Kyncl’s career move was announced — Bloomberg indicated that Warner Music was courting the longtime YouTube operative.

Warner Music Group, home to the likes of Cardi B, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars, reported higher fiscal third-quarter revenue and net income on Tuesday as music publishing revenue grew 30 percent and a bounceback in some parts of the business previously affected by the Covid pandemic.
It also cited “solid underlying streaming growth despite ad-supported pressure” amid macro-economic clouds.
Net income for the latest period ended in June amounted to 125 million, more than double the 61 million recorded in the year-ago period, the company said before the stock market open. Adjusted net income jumped 77 percent from 83 million to 147 million. The improvements came amid higher revenue and “the favorable impact of exchange rates on the company’s euro-denominated debt and a loss on extinguishment of debt in the prior-year quarter.”
Warner Music Group CEO Stephen Cooper told analysts his company was well positioned to withstand any recessionary threat.

YouTube has reportedly inked new licensing agreements with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment -- the world’s two largest record labels. (YouTube signed a deal with the third largest label, Warner Music Group, in May -- though CEO Steve Cooper took the opportunity to excoriate the video giant for underpaying artists and enabling copyright infringement to flourish).
The long-term deals, reached after roughly two years of negotiation, establish royalty rates for Universal and Sony artists whose videos are uploaded to YouTube, as well as any user-generated clips, according to Bloomberg -- including song covers. The deals state that YouTube will police copyright infringement more aggressively, and also help set the stage for a rumored music streaming service tentatively called Remix that's slated to launch next year.

Thanks to some critical statements made by Warner Music CEO Steve Cooper, the contentious battle between YouTube and the music industry has been reheated, and the video site wants to state its case. Its owner, Google, has published a study it backed that supports YouTube’s claim as a positive force in the music industry. The study, which was run by Rbb Economics, states that 85% of “heavy users” who listen to songs on YouTube would get their music from a “lower value platform” if said music was no longer available on YouTube.
The timing of the study is convenient, as it allows Google to respond to Cooper’s recent attack. In a memo to employees, which he authored after Warner agreed to re-up its licensing deals with YouTube, Cooper claimed that YouTube and other similar sites use the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s safe harbor provision as leverage in order...

Throughout the past year, YouTube has battled major record labels in a highly public dispute. The labels allege YouTube has created a “value gap” on its platform between the ad revenue it takes in from music videos and that which it pays out to artists and their partners. At the same time, groups like the RIAA have accused YouTube of exploiting the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (Dmca)’s safe harbor provision, which allows online video platforms to avoid legal responsibility for pirated music so long as they respond to takedown requests from rights holders in a timely manner.
Given all that controversy, the future relationship between YouTube and the music industry has been fraught for some time now, but the video site will continue to work with the third-largest label in the world. It has renewed its licensing contract with Warner Music Group, though the label’s top exec made...

Lamprell came on board after reading the script by Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral), who wrote the original film.

Lamprell, who got his start at Kennedy Miller making Bts documentaries such as The Making of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), describes A Few Less Men as "a silly comedy.".

Lamprell came on board after reading the script by Dean Craig (Death at a Funeral), who wrote the original film.
"It was lovely working on somebody else's screenplay because it was a really solid screenplay structurally," Lamprell said. "I could see that there was a really good movie in there. Dean's a very accomplished writer. The whole guts of it were laid out before me.".
Lamprell, who got his start at Kennedy Miller making Bts documentaries such as The Making of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), describes A Few Less Men as "a silly comedy.".

Legendary Hollywood film studio MGM declared bankruptcy Wednesday, with reorganization plans approved by billionaire investor Carl Icahn under an agreement with Spyglass Entertainment.Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a New York court seeking approval of a "pre-packaged" plan approved by its creditors after rejecting a takeover offer from Lionsgate and its biggest shareholder, Icahn. The plan allows the company's secured lenders to exchange more than four billion dollars in outstanding debt for most of the equity in MGM upon its emergence from bankruptcy protection, the company said in a statement. The main difference between the plan submitted Wednesday and another approved by its major creditors on Friday is linked to Spyglass, which recently released the Clint Eastwood-directed film "Invictus" and is preparing to release "The Tourist" with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. An MGM spokeswoman told Afp that in exchange...
