The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.
Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

One man is preparing for a “quite unbelievable” Oscars night, having found himself nominated three times this year in the same category.
Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould is up against himself twice over, after being recognised in the category for his work on three movies – Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, The Creator and Napoleon.
Corbould has two previous Oscars to his name – for Gladiator and Gravity. He told the BBC that this year’s close-to-hand competition could be “the kiss of death,” and said:
“I might have three seats and have to play musical chairs!” The best part? “I get invited to three different after parties.”
Corbould has been working in the film industry for nearly five decades, having followed his uncle into special effects. Colin Chilvers previously won an Oscar himself, for his work on the 1978 movie Superman. He also worked on The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Condorman...

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “The Creator,” “Godzilla Minus One,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “Napoleon.” Our odds currently indicate that “Godzilla Minus One” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “The Creator” (18/5), the new “Guardians” entry (9/2), “Napoleon” (9/2), and the latest “Mission: Impossible” chapter (9/2).
Included among the 17 individuals in this lineup are 13 first-timers who constitute the category’s largest newcomer rate since the minimum annual amount of nominated films was set at five in 2011. This vast majority comprises all four “Godzilla Minus One” team members, dual contender Simone Coco (“Mission: Impossible” and “Napoleon”), three artists from “The Creator”, two from “Guardians of the Galaxy” (Theo Bialek and Alexis Wajsbrot), two more from “Mission: Impossible” (Jeff Sutherland and Alex Wuttke), and one more from “Napoleon” (Luc-Ewen Martin-Fenouillet).

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

As had been generally expected, Gareth Edwards’ futuristic sci-fi film “The Creator” proved to be the favorite among visual effects practitioners. The film topped the feature competition at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards, claiming five wins including one in the leading category for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature.
Wednesday night at the Beverly Hilton, it also won the categories for created environment, model, compositing and lighting and effects simulations. Also, in the feature competition, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” collected two awards for the digital character (the emotive Rocket) and virtual cinematography. “Oppenheimer” grabbed the trophy for practical effects, and “Nyad” took home the award for supporting VFX. Sony Pictures Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was the big winner among the animated features, collecting four awards.

Best Visual Effects is one of my personal favorite Oscar categories, but this year it’s one without a single Best Picture nominee in the bunch, which isn’t that uncommon — it happened most recently in 2020. Not that it necessarily matters, since not a single movie that has won Best Picture has also won this category going all the way back to Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. In fact, that was the last Best Picture winner to even be nominated in this category.
Two of the movies nominated this year received no other nominations, while the others only received one or two additional below-the-line bids. What’s interesting is that there is only one visual effects nominee that is also nominated for its production design: Ridley Scott‘s “Napoleon,” which only received three below-the-line nominations total. Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” pulled off a surprise tally at the Oscar nominations announcement, riding in with three bids, the most for a movie that was not recognized in the Best Picture category this year. It cracked Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects, signaling significant support for the Apple Original Films’ historical epic, particularly in the last category as it took out powerful contenders like “Society of the Snow,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Best Picture nominee “Poor Things.” Since the VFX race looks to be up in the air, “Napoleon” may have a stronger chance of emerging victorious than most awards pundits think.

Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould scored a rare hat trick on Tuesday, grabbing three VFX Oscar nominations, for his work on Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi thriller The Creator, Ridley Scott’s period epic Napoleon and Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
The veteran SFX supervisor previously won Academy Awards for Gravity and Scott’s Gladiator. This year’s noms are the sixth, seventh and eighth in his career.
He wasn’t the only veteran to score multiple Oscar nominations this season. His fellow nominee, Simone Coco, a VFX supervisor at Industrial Light & Magic, also scored nominations for Dead Reckoning and Napoleon. These are Coco’s first and second nominations.
Four-time Oscar winner Richard King received a pair of sound nominations, as supervising sound editor and designer of both Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic Oppenheimer and Bradley Cooper Leonard Bernstein movie Maestro. These are his seventh and eighth Academy Award nominations.

Also scoring nods was Poor Things’ Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan; UK production designers Shona Heath and James Price; musician Jerskin Fendrix in score; costume designer Holly Waddington; and the make-up and hairstyling team of Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Josh Weston.

When “Napoleon” visual effects supervisor Charley Henley began planning the massive Battle of Waterloo sequence with director Ridley Scott, the initial discussions centered on the question of how to stage it like the spectacles of Hollywood past. “We wanted to get as close as possible to an old David Lean movie where there are thousands of extras and you’re doing it all live,” Henley told IndieWire. “One of the ideas was to shoot in Ireland using the Irish army, but we pretty quickly realized we couldn’t afford to do that.”
A variety of economic factors — as well as the need to strip the production down due to Covid-19 — meant that “Napoleon” would have to rely heavily on digital effects to realize Scott’s epic vision, but the core principle of doing as much as possible practically remained. “One of the key things for me was getting something real into every shot,...

At the turn of the millennium, Gladiator revived Ridley Scott_. But despite constant rumours, he’s never returned to the world of his greatest hit… until now.
Here’s what you need to know.
1) It’s a Ridley Scott joint
Scott might have ceded the director’s chair for Blade Runner 2049 to Denis Villeneuve, but rather than delegate the Gladiator sequel, he’s kept it for himself. Production is set to get underway when he finishes his quiet, intimate drama (read: massive battle-tastic historical epic) Napoleon, which is currently in post-production.
It’s funny to see him taking on back-to-back sword-swinging behemoths – back in the early 2000s, Scott nearly turned down the offer from super-producer Dino De Laurentiis to direct Hannibal, because he thought it was about the Carthaginian general and his elephants, and couldn’t face climbing another Gladiator-sized mountain straight away.Apparently he has even more energy today,...

Two years ago, siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell shared in four Grammy wins for the album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” (Album of the Year; Best Pop Vocal Album) and its single “Bad Guy” (Record of the Year; Song of the Year). Now, they have concurrently earned their first Oscar nominations for co-writing the song “No Time to Die” for the James Bond film of the same name. If they prevail later this month, they will become the fourth brother-sister pair to both be honored by the academy and the first to win for the same film.
The first brother-sister Oscar champs and first sibling winners overall were Douglas Shearer and Norma Shearer. In 1930, he triumphed in the Best Sound category for “The Big House” while she took the Best Actress prize for “The Divorcee.” They were followed by Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore, who respectively...

The Visual Effects Society is gettin’ in toon for its 18th annual Ves Awards. The group said today that it has expanded the number of categories open to animation projects for its 2020 trophy show and also is launching a new category: Outstanding Special (Practical) Effects in a Photoreal Project.
Animation projects now can compete for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a CG Project and in all three compositing categories: Outstanding Compositing in a Feature, Episode and Commercial. The 4,000-member group said the expanded eligibility reflects meaningful conversations with animation industry leaders and recognition of trends where live-action and toon production are blending and the legions of outstanding compositors working in animation.
The new Special Effects category was introduced after careful consideration by the Ves Awards Committee and collaborative discussion with prominent members of the Special Effects community, the Ves said.

Most of those who have earned the honor of Ves Fellow in the past decade have been recognized by the Visual Effects Society for on-screen innovation. But this year’s honoree, Susan Zwerman, is equally distinguished by her off-screen accomplishments. Zwerman is the studio executive producer for Exceptional Minds, a visual effects and animation school for young adults on the autism spectrum and a studio that employs those artists on projects ranging from “Game of Thrones” to Marvel Studios blockbusters.
“I encourage many young adults on the spectrum to go into visual effects and animation,” says Zwerman, an industry veteran of more than 40 years. “It’s a nice challenge, and I feel they live up to it.”
The org will recognize Zwerman, Neil Corbould and Harrison Ellenshaw as this year’s Ves Fellows — a title granted for exceptional achievements and sustained contributions to the art, science or business of visual effects — in a ceremony Oct.

While “Avengers: Infinity War” topped the 17th annual Ves Awards (to be held February 5th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) with six nominations, “Black Panther,” Marvel’s other Oscar frontrunner, was shut out. And Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed “First Man,” another frontrunner, was included in the supporting category as a result of its invisible VFX. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” meanwhile, was also snubbed.
However, joining “Infinity War” in the top VFX category were a surprising list: “Ready Player One” (with five nominations), “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “Christopher Robin” and “Welcome to Marwen.” Joining “First Man” for supporting VFX were “12 Strong,” Bird Box,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Outlaw King”.
In animation, Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” with four. They were joined by Illumination’s “The Grinch” and Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs.

John Boyega (Star Wars) has jumped on board an new fantasy horror film project called A Spriggan as an executive producer. The film will be developed in the UK and it comes from writer and director Keir Burrows (Anti Matter) and producer Josephine Rose (Slaughterhouse Rulez).
The story for the film follows "a recently widowed mother who returns to her father’s isolated hotel only to find a sinister folklore presence haunting the land."
In UK folklore, Spriggans were "depicted as spirits related to the trolls of Scandinavia. They were often characterized as grotesquely ugly, wizened old men with large child-like heads. Although small, they were often considered to be the ghosts of giants, with the ability to swell to far greater size. The character has become the subject of a host of manga series in Japan."

Along with the excitement building up for “Alien: Covenant” has been an undercurrent of apology. A couple of months back, VFX supervisor Neil Corbuld stated that following “Prometheus,” director Ridley Scott “listened to the audience” and learned “that they want more aliens” in the upcoming movie. I’m not quite sure that was criticism about the film, but nonetheless, Scott does take some of the failures of “Prometheus” onto his shoulders.

Created to serve, Michael Fassbender’s Walter, the world’s most advanced synthetic companion, tumbles off the production line in the all-new viral clip for Ridley Scott’s prequel-sequel, Alien Covenant.
If you’ve been keeping pace with Covenant‘s development cycle, you’ll know that Walter is one of two androids to feature in the horror flick – the other being David, also portrayed by Michael Fassbender – and is considered an instrumental member of the crew as the embark on humanity’s first large-scale colonization mission. He’ll be working under Katherine Waterston’s terraforming expert Daniels, who spearheads the search for a wayward distress call on a remote alien planet. And if that wasn’t enough to prove Alien: Covenant is poised to steer the franchise back to its putrid horror roots, VFX expert Neil Corbould has warned fans that the imminent sci-fi adventure is the goriest entry in...

Let it be known that Alien: Covenant will be teeming with blood – lots and lots of blood.
IGN caught up with VFX supervisor and all-around industry stalwart Neil Corbould, who revealed that Covenant is the goriest entry into Ridley Scott’s franchise by quite a margin, after the production team went through “a few gallons of blood” while filming. Corbould knows a thing or two about working with on-screen violence, too, considering that the effects expert has credits on Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down, and his comments only align with early signs that Scott is steering his sci-fi icon back to its slimy horror roots.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that Ridley Scott and his creative team are dialling up the violence just for the sake of it, though. As Corbould tells IGN, the director made a conscious effort to implement practical effects wherever possible in an effort to heighten realism.

Coming out of the latest (and greatest?) trailer for Alien: Covenant, you’d struggle to find anyone that was left bemoaning the lack of blood and extra-terrestrial gore. As part of his mission to drag the series back to its putrid horror roots, writer-director Ridley Scott has reportedly made a conscious effort to address the criticism leveled at Prometheus and use it as a means of improving Covenant. Spoilers: it involved adding more Xenomorphs.
Set a full decade after the doomed Prometheus voyage went to pot in spectacular fashion, Alien: Covenant heralds humanity’s first ever large-scale colonization mission. Headed up by Katherine Waterston and Michael Fassbender – he’ll play Walter, an updated version of the David synthetic – the crew decide to break course in order to answer a distress call (!), and it’s here, on a desolate planet with zero sign of life, that things start to go awry.

It’s been a busy few days in the Alien: Covenant camp and the juicy tidbits just keep coming.

Among the media blowout, we learned a little more about the ways in which Ridley Scott and Co. pinpointed what worked – and, perhaps most important of all, what didn’t work – in 2012’s Prometheus, before splicing together the film’s best elements with those found in the original Alien movie. The result? A back-to-basics sci-fi sequel that isn’t afraid to unleash true terror upon the moviegoing masses. And there will be blood, lots and lots of blood.

Xenomorphs, Facehuggers, Chestbursters – three nightmarish pillars of Ridley Scott’s Alien universe that will all be present in Alien: Covenant, which is set to extract the very best elements of Prometheus and dial the scare factor up to 11.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

The first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has hit. Gareth Edwards’ spinoff tale of a group of rebels working to steal plans for the Death Star isn’t related director to the new trilogy that began with The Force Awakens last year, but should still make for a solid adventure by the looks of it.
We wanted to get the trailer up right away, so take it all in and save the date!
The trailer looks fantastic, seeing the assembly of the Death Star, familiar uniforms and locations from A New Hope, and friggin At-at’s on a beach around palm trees. I have to say I am pretty excited about this one. Have some thoughts of your own? Share them on our Facebook page.

No other craft finds itself so prominently featured in the minds of movie executives. The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects awards up to four individuals who play the most important roles in crafting a film’s visual effects. I should note that the sorts of films that get nominated in this category tend to feature dozens if not hundreds of individuals on their visual effects crews. As a result, determining which supervisors will be nominated can be tricky from this far out. More than any other Oscar category, blockbusters tend to score here. Being a “prestigious” and...
