WASHINGTON -- The head of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the government's major funding arm for public broadcast programming, called it quits Friday, after barely nine months on the job. In a joint statement issued late Friday, the CPB board and Kathleen Cox said she decided to leave after completing most of the recommendations made by the consulting firm the McKinsey Group. The study recommended ways to deal with public broadcasting's funding shortfall, among other things. The CPB announced that Ken Ferree will take over as interim head of the agency. Ferree ran the FCC's media bureau under former chairman Michael Powell. Ferree was named CPB's chief executive officer and executive vp less than a month ago.

WASHINGTON -- The Corporation for Public Broadcasting's board of directors on Tuesday announced a change at the top as it named Kathleen Cox president and CEO. She will succeed Robert Coonrod, who has served in that role for seven years. Cox joined CPB in June 1997 and currently serves as executive vp and chief operating officer of the private, nonprofit corporation that oversees the federal contribution to public television and radio. "The board conducted a comprehensive national search and considered a number of outstanding candidates," CPB board chairman Ken Tomlinson said.
