Matt Charman, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of “Bridge of Spies,” is adapting the science-fiction graphic novel “A Radical Shift of Gravity” into a feature film.
Todd Lieberman’s production company Hidden Pictures and Idw Entertainment are backing the movie, which follows one family’s struggle to stay grounded amid a massive planetary transformation.
Created by Nick Tapalansky and Kate Glasheen, “A Radical Shift of Gravity” is described as a fable that “explores the ties that bind a family together, the forces that threaten to pull them apart, and the quiet beauty of a world where everyone is floating away.” The story centers on Noah, a father and journalist who is raising a rebellious daughter as their world faces a seismic shift. Noah spends his days documenting the wondrous and terrifying metamorphosis around him as his offspring faces her own challenges of growing older in a radically changing world.

Reality Checks: Do Celebrity Supporters like Brad Pitt and Eva Longoria Actually Help Documentaries?
What do Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Eva Longoria all have in common? They're all executive producers on recent documentary feature films. While celebrities such as these may not be known for their nonfiction filmmaking, they're joining an increasing list of A-list talent attaching themselves to theatrical documentaries in order to catapult a film and its issues to a larger audience. But does the strategy always work? For the release of Matthew Heinemann's intense chronicle of violence and vigilantism along the Arizona/Mexican border, "Cartel Land," on July 3, for example, acclaimed director Kathryn Bigelow recently signed her name onto the project. According to Paul Davidson, Svp at The Orchard — which is releasing "Cartel Land" — Bigelow was an early supporter of the film, and will host screenings and speak on its behalf. "I would say that Kathryn's track record and award-winning filmmaking is world renowned and her involvement as Ep on the movie.

Deemed “unfit” for Tiff, Sebastian Silva’s Nasty Baby is the latest addition to The Orchard’s ever expanding Sundance family grove. IndieWIRE reports that The Next section gem joins Paul Davidson’s other Park City grabs (most ballsy-attentioning getting) items such as Patrick Brice’s The Overnight, Joe Swanberg’s Digging for Fire, docs Bryan Carberry & Clay Tweel’s Finders Keepers and Matthew Heineman’s Cartel Land (both are hitting True/False Film Fest next month). The distrib will release the film later this year, which means there’ll be further ops to catch the film on the fest circuit.
Gist: This centers around a Brooklyn couple, Freddy and his boyfriend Mo, who are trying to have a baby with the help of their best friend, Polly (Wiig). Freddy is an artist, and his latest work is all about babies – it’s clear he’s dying to be a father.

Foreign films and a doc scored well in the Specialty arena this weekend. That isn’t something I get to write very often but it’s a pleasure when it happens. China Lion‘s Breakup Buddies, Tribeca Film‘s music doc Nas: Time Is Illmatic and Bollywood heavyweight Bang Bang all pulled in solid numbers when they debuted this weekend among U.S. speciality films.
By contrast, the weekend’s most notable U.S. indie debut, Jason Reitman‘s Men, Women & Children, took a dive in its first limited runs, while Radius-twc’s music documentary Keep On Keepin’ On again lived up to its name, gathering momentum in its third week.
That so-so start came even though Paramount seemingly did everything right for Men, Women & Children after a premiere at Toronto. The company created a marketing campaign that targeted both social networking-savvy young audiences and the traditional movie-going crowd. The...

Independent music, film and video distributor The Orchard has acquired the worldwide rights to acclaimed sports feature "No No: A Dockumentary." Directed and produced by Jeffrey Radice, the documentary premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and tells the life story of major league pitcher Dock Ellis, who is most famous for throwing a no-hitter under the influence of LSD. It will be available through The Orchard's documentary imprint Opus Docs. "'No No' is a film that showcases a larger-than-life character, whose spirit, attitude, and fight against racism -- not to mention his excessive drug use -- embodied the Zeitgeist of the 1970s. Well-crafted, unique, fun, and layered, it is a film for everyone, not just baseball fans," said Paul Davidson, the Orchard’s Senior Vice President of Film & TV.

Ever since Joss Whedon announced that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would be the Avengers' new recruits in 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," fans have wondered how the duo's mutant heritage would be addressed. While Marvel Studios definitely has the rights to the two long-serving Avengers members, Fox has the rights to Marvel's mutants—rights that include the term "mutant."
Things heated up when "X-Men: Days of Future Past" director Bryan Singer announced that Quicksilver would be in his film too, a move that Joss Whedon has said doesn't change his film one bit. In fact, the film has started taking steps towards casting the two roles, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson reportedly up for Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen in talks to play Scarlet Witch. But if Marvel can't call Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver mutants, then how will they explain their powers?
We're calling it: they're going to be Inhumans.

Saga Volume 2, trade paperback, Brian K Vaughan, Fiona Staples, Image Comics
This is the first of two trade paperbacks I splurged on this week, though technically I’ve saved money by choosing to follow Saga in trades rather than monthly books. Saga is the uh, saga of a couple from opposing races in a galactic war who have eloped and made a baby. Word of Marko and Alana’s marriage has gotten out and mightily pissed off the leaders of both sides, who have sent various assassins to deal with what they see as an abominable union. The book is narrated from the future by the couple’s child, Hazel and kicks off with Marko’s parents teleporting themselves into the lives of the refugee family.
Brian K Vaughan is a brilliantly talented writer; Runaways is probably my favourite comic series and Y: The Last Man is similarly superlative stuff.

What a week. Dark Horse, DC, Marvel, Image, Idw. So much storytelling! It’s overwhelming. Let’s go brain-hopping, shall we?
Colder #2 was so great we gave the issue its own review.
Darwyn Cooke’s Before Watchmen: Minutemen has managed to turn what some labeled a gimmick into heart-wrenching fare that gives emotional weight to the original. No small feat. Issue #5 continues to add multiple dimensions to Hollis Mason and the original masked gang, shedding both light and shadow. If you avoided Before Watchmen for moral reasons, you might still want to give Minutemen a try. It’s that good.
For fans of the Marvel movie universe, there is no better beginning fodder for you than Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers #1. I want to marry it. Jerome Opena’s art is so good I could throw up a planet. The scope is so huge it could take on all nine (nine?...

“Mutantkind’s final war starts here. If you don’t know which side you’re on, check your DNA.”
The Age of Apocalypse event that rocked the Marvel Universe in the 90s is one of the most ambitious displays of storytelling to ever grace the panel. Many fans who were able to follow the X-Men franchise in that time look back on it fondly. For four months we experienced an alternate world in which Charles Xavier dies before ever realizing his dream, Magneto becomes the patriarch of the X-Men, and Apocalypse conquers North America, rounds up homo sapiens, and puts them in slave pens.
It...

Here’s the Fifth and final Marvel teaser for the Age Of X, which was accompanied by the tagline:
Survive the Age Of X with Revenant and Reaper!
Age of X begins in January and will tell the story of mutantkind’s darkest days, although specific plot details are currently unknown… Looks to me like our comic guru, The Baron, was right in his theory that these are re-named X-Men, that sure looks like Rogue in the foreground to me. Read his theories in full here.

Here’s the Fourth Marvel teaser of the Age Of X, which was accompanied by the tagline:
Survive the Age Of X with Cannonball and Magneto!
However our resident comics expert Baron Fortnightly has done some digging and come up an interesting theory… Check it out:
Age of X begins in January and will tell the story of mutantkind’s darkest days, although specific plot details are currently unknown.
The Baron thinks that some of these “new” characters will be revealed as existing characters in disguise. Basilisk will be Cyclops, Berserker will be one of the Proudstar brothers. Perhaps the X in Age of X will be Xavier, and the mutants with Magneto are those that feel Xavier’s softly, softly approach doesn’t work. The group looks quite militant, but the weapons look low tech – Gambit is holding a civil war era musket, and Berserker a stone axe.

You know who’s pretty good? That, rapper Drake. You ever hear his mix-tape “So Far Gone”? It’s pretty good. If you Google it or something you can download it for free. It’s a mix-tape, so it’s perfectly legal. I don’t think his studio album will be very good, but at least we’ll have the mix-tapes.
So welcome to This Week in Comics, which is at least as good as a mediocre studio record.
