It may be going on eight years since a "Star Trek" movie has graced the big screen, but the franchise is arguably more fruitful than it has ever been. Several shows are currently on air, including the much-beloved "Strange New Worlds" as well as "Discovery," which is entering its final season, and plenty more "Trek" is on the way. One of the shows fans have to look forward to in the future is "Starfleet Academy," which will offer a glimpse into the world of the famed school for those who want to boldly go where no man has gone before. And it sounds very much like Paramount is sparing no expense with this particular series.
In a recent cover story for Variety about the future of the franchise, it was revealed that "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" will have the largest single set ever created for a "Star Trek" TV show.

Designing and constructing sets from scratch is just half of a production designer’s job. Depending on the project, there’s also scouting for location shooting. And sometimes, you can’t shoot as is, like on “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
“It’s all fantasy, so we can’t go down the street in Auckland and find a place to shoot,” Ramsey Avery tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel roundtable with Matthew Davies (“Five Days at Memorial”), Mark Scruton (“Wednesday”) and Richard Bloom (“Welcome to Chippendales”). “We ended learning how to make a sheep paddock outside of Auckland look like something else. What we would look for is a couple things: one, what are the bones? Does it have really good graphic shapes in terms of what we’re trying to have this scene say? Where’s the light coming...

“Five Days at Memorial” was developed by John Ridley and Carlton Cuse, but production designer Matthew Davies considers someone else to be the anchor: Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink, who wrote the non-fiction book, “Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital,” on which the show is based.
The Apple TV+ limited series follows the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans. As conditions deteriorated over the course of five days, between the loss of power and flooding, doctors and caregivers had to take drastic measures to care for patients while attempting to bring them to safety one by one. Fink, who served as a producer on the show, was an invaluable asset to Davies and his team as they set about recreating every aspect of the the true story in exacting detail.

Mask of the Devil, the third feature from director Richard Rowntree and co-writer Matthew Davies after Dogged and Nefarious, opens in 1878 somewhere in West Africa. A group of Englishmen led by Captain Ladrao (Geoff Woodman) and Colonel Voleur attack a group of tribesmen in order to steal a sacred mask and in doing so unleash something best left alone.
In the present Mary (Nicole Katherine Riddell; White Sky) is upset because her boyfriend won’t put out because God wouldn’t approve and her father treats her like a child. Deciding to get a job so she can move out she ends up working for Roosh a filmmaker of the adult variety. His current production is a Tarzan parody, and one of the props is a familiar-looking mask.

Matthew Davies has become the fourth housemate to be evicted from 'Big Brother.' The 23-year-old media graduate, who describes himself as a ''prima donna and drama queen,'' left the house to a mixed response from the crowd tonight (04.07.14), but insisted he wasn't surprised by the result. Upon leaving the Channel 5 reality TV series, the controversial contestant told host Emma Willis: ''I don't know why I'm doing this.'' He also said it was ''strange'' to be out and admitted he had been a ''bit bitter'' on the show. He explained: ''I think a lot of them are really likeable in the house...and I...

Despite a reasonably active acting career, Sarah Polley has put together quite an elegant little list of writing/directing credits for her already lengthy resume. Last year, her film Take This Waltz debuted at Tiff and continued on the festival circuit garnering rave reviews all along its travels. A vibrant romantic drama, Polley’s picture employs Seth Rogan, Luke Kirby and Michelle Williams to explore what it means to be in a long term relationship and our inherent human attraction to newness and the things we can not have. And though chock-full of red hot chemistry and openhearted connection, the film is one of warning. Sometimes relationships need time to evolve, as giving in to temptation won’t always make you a happier person.
At the onset of Polley’s plot, Margot (Williams) has yet to learn this lesson. She’s become bored in her 5 year marriage to Lou (Rogan), a stay-at-home cook book writer.

Last week, Welsh rock royalty Funeral For A Friend rolled into Newcastle, packing a hugely enthusiastic audience into the city’s O2 Academy on a night when the air outside carried the first proper chill of the impending cruel winter, but which inside was pregnant with the venomous rock energy of Ffaf and their legion of support acts.
The post-hardcore fivesome brought along three such supports, with both The Bunny The Bear (just plain odd) and The Amity Affliction (energetic and impressive) offering entertaining opening slots before Escape The Fate burst on stage, meshing Avenged Sevenfold guitar licks and complex solos with Bullet For My Valentine vocals and The Used -style melodies, eating up the stage, winning over a lot of an admittedly very willing crowd and burning through a short-feeling set whose perceived speed had more to do with the band’s energy than actual show time. They don...
