[The following story contains spoilers for The Woman King.]
Few actors can say that they went toe to toe with Oscar winner Viola Davis, but Thuso Mbedu has done just that in her major studio debut, The Woman King.
In Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic about the West African kingdom of Dahomey, Mbedu plays Nawi, a young girl who quite literally rejects an arranged marriage. As a result, her adoptive father offers her to King Ghezo (John Boyega) so that she can vie to join the Agojie, Dahomey’s all-female regiment of warriors. Nawi quickly proves to be the most gifted young warrior in the group, and through a series of events, she discovers that her biological mother happens to be the leader of the Agojie, General Nanisca (Viola Davis).
The reveal scene between mother and daughter was incredibly personal to Prince-Bythewood, and it consists of dialogue that she...

Swimmer Simone Manuel was surprised when she took the gold in the 100-meter freestyle event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio last Thursday. But that was nothing compared to the shock on her face when returned home to Houston. Exiting the gate at 5:25 a.m. after her overnight flight from Rio, Manuel was met with a hero's welcome of cheering fans and family at George Bush Intercontinental Airport - all decked in their red, white and blue. "I didn't expect that," Manuel said about the homecoming celebration in video from the Associated Press. "But I appreciate all the love and support.

After some rather wonderful library music over the opening sequences, we are introduced to Becky, a young and attractive coed played by Becky Savage (Sweets Cheeks, Foreplay) living in La. We find out that she is uninterested in her life, especially when it comes to her sex life. Although sexless, she sure does have an imagination as we find out when she makes love with Herschel Savage (Honeymoon Haven) who is playing as “Candle Light Lover” according to IMDb. After her rather prolonged (it will happen a lot in this one chaps) imaginary sex session, she wants something to change, so she does what every young girl like herself does… applies to be a prostitute at a Cathouse in Las Vegas!
Once uprooted, she’s put...

Fox Sports has been sued by a former executive who alleges he was denied a promotion and later fired because he is black. In a lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Jerry Davis claims he is a 52 year old black man who worked at Fox Sports for more than 15 years as a director in the music department. When the position directly senior to him became available four separate times, he was passed over "because, as a black man, he did not fit neatly into the company's corporate culture,"

Read the entire lawsuit here. The plaintiff Jerry Davis alleges in a lawsuit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court that the Fox Sports Corporate Group currently employs 34 executives above the VP level – and not one of them is black. “Indeed, to the best of Mr. Davis’s knowledge, no Black person has ever held any position at or above vice president in that division’s entire 19-year existence. Representation of Black individuals in leadership positions in other sports divisions at Fox is, and always has been, similarly abysmal. During the course of its existence, Fox Sports, through its various divisions and entities, has intentionally maintained a practice of directly and indirectly favoring the hiring and/or promotion of non-Black and non-minority employees at senior levels without any legitimate reason. Mr. Davis is a direct victim of this discriminatory practice.” Davis’ lawsuit describes himself as a 52-year-old African-American man, Berkeley grad,...

TCM has put out some great vintage film collections in the last few years. The collections usually have a fair collection of winners and so-so contenders who need the better films to make them palatable and Esther Williams: Volume 2 is no exception. However, to the volume’s credit, it has a better ratio than most sets with 4 good to great films supporting 2 mediocre ones. The set could very well help reel in some younger viewers as the films in this volume have a surprisingly modern feel to them all. This one maybe good, but it might still qualify as “for collectors only”.
