- According to his NY Times obituary, Mr. Dawley had worked for the Pierce-Arrow Company in the art department and was a designer of special cars. It claimed he originated the idea of placing headlights on fenders.
- Dawley joined Pierce-Arrow in 1912, and assisted in the design of almost every model until 1938, when the company folded.
- Formed H.M. Dawley Inc, a film production company, in New York City in 1922.
