Given that athletics is all about representing - your prowess, your team, your country - it’s ironic how often participants have found themselves erased from its history, an idea Julia Fuhr Mann’s ambitious first feature explores. Using a variety of techniques, including an essay structure and the insertion of modern-day athletes into archive footage, Mann suggests that excelling has always been fine for white men, but if you happen to be an exceptional woman, Black or transgender then nobody wants to put you on a pedestal or podium.
Noting the bias that has long existed by referencing Olympic Games founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who once declared “female athletes act against the law of nature”, Mann highlights key moments of sporting history that have been rewritten. The documentarian comes at the argument robustly and with invention. She also takes a team approach to her material, using a group of her documentary.

Geneva, Sep 29 (Ians) The International Olympic Committee (Ioc) has released its first-ever visual identity in order to bring the Olympic brand and its core values to life, the Ioc announced on Wednesday.
This new visual system has been created to bolster the Olympic brand’s core values, while enhancing consistency, recognition and impact across all Ioc platforms, communications and publications, the Ioc said via a media release.
“The Ioc recognised the need to create a comprehensive foundational identity, designed for use across all mediums and channels,” the release said.
The full brand rollout is expected to be completed by the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The modern Olympics are widely known with the five Olympic rings — blue, black, red, yellow and green, which was designed by Pierre de Coubertin in 1913, but the latest evolution is aiming to bring the legacy of the games into the modern world.
