In between filming Seasons 5 and 6 of “Better Call Saul,” Rhea Seehorn had no way of knowing that she was prepping for not one, but two Emmy-nominated roles at the same time. That down time away from her work on the beloved AMC show gave her the chance to be part of the team behind “Cooper’s Bar,” a six-episode short-form show airing on AMC+ about a backyard hangout spot that becomes part of a studio development bidding war.
“We did all that work on hiatus, then continue to have a couple of Zoom meetings throughout Season 6 of ‘Saul’ so that the second I got back, we could do some physical production prep, and then go ahead and shoot it,” Seehorn said. “The majority of the people that are on ‘Cooper’s Bar’ are friends of mine, and we just wanted to do something together. So we had a blast.”

Further flexing the muscles of its worldwide sales and distribution operation at this year’s European Film Market, 108 Media has just sealed a deal on Fugly!, an autobiographical comedy written by and starring John Leguizamo, it was announced by 108 CEO Abhi Rastogi. With foreign sales commencing immediately in Berlin, the film will also see a theatrical release in North America via 108 Media and it’s distribution partner, Paladin. Fugly! Is slated to open in the third quarter of this year. A fictionalized rendering of his acclaimed one-man show, “Ghetto Klown,” (which played on Broadway prior to an extensive international tour), Fugly! casts Leguizamo as Jesse Sanchez, a Latino comic who has a near-death experience that forces him to revisit his personal and professional highs and lows. Told in a style that befits the envelope-pushing Jesse–and Leguizamo–the film blends past, present, fantasy, and reality to tell of one man’s hilarious quest for fame,...

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

John Leguizamo, who launched his career writing and performing one-man stage shows, has transferred that voice to the big screen. Leguizamo just wrapped Fugly!, a comedy he wrote and stars in, along with Rahda Mitchell, Rosie Perez, Ioan Gruffudd, Ally Sheedy and Griffin Dunne. Leguizamo plays a New York comedian struggling to make the right choices in his pursuit of love and happiness. A near-death experience forces him to choose between the wife he no longer loves and the college crush he regrets losing. Alfredo De Villa directed the independently-financed film, which Leguizamo produced with Laura Knight and Danny Bigel. The film features animation created by Bill Plympton.

Chicago – Many editions of the DVD Round-Up have featured a different genre and focus for each title within it. This week seems a little more thematically linked as we have a trio of foreign horror films and a few more independent films than usual. Of course, there has to a holiday comedy to spice things up.

Fox's remake of the sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" survived critics' toxic attacks in weekend-winning style, as the Keanu Reeves starrer landed atop the domestic boxoffice with an estimated $31 million in opening grosses.
Overture's urban laugher "Nothing Like the Holidays" debuted much more modestly, with $3.5 million in seventh place. And Freestyle's animated adventure "Delgo" never got started, debuting with just $916,000.
Warner Bros.' comedy "Four Christmases" nabbed second place over its third outing with $13.3 million and an $88 million cume. Summit's vampire romance "Twilight" finished third over its fourth frame with an $8 million performance and a $150.1 million cume.
Two wide releases tumbled from the top 10 during their second weekends. Sony's Chess Records musical "Cadillac Records" fell 54% to $1.6 million for a 10-day cume of $5.9 million, while Lionsgate's action sequel "Punisher: War Zone" slid a big 68% to $1.7 million with a $7 million cume.

There are no ingredients in Nothing Like the Holidays that you're not already familiar with from other big-crazy-family Christmas movies. Then again, so what? The Christmas breakfast my mom makes every year never has anything new either -- in fact, there would be open rebellion if it did -- and that suits everyone just fine.
Nothing Like the Holidays is warm and comfortable in that way, mostly pleasant, mostly well acted, and moderately entertaining. Directed by Alfredo De Villa (Washington Heights), it boasts a luminous ensemble of Latino actors as two generations of Puerto Ricans living in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. It captures the cultural flavor of their yuletide festivities and intra-family squabbling without being so specific that non-Latino audiences can't appreciate it. Details aside, anyone with a family can relate to most of what happens here.

Are you in the mood for a holiday family flick? Then Alfredo De Villa's "Nothing Like the Holidays" is just right for you. Starring John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Vanessa Ferlito, Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz, Alfred Molina and many others, the film follows a family's desperate attempt to celebrate a peaceful Christmas. Here's what the Web's critics have to say about it:
• CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "People do things that are illogical if not outright stupid, and out of character, for the sake of the creaky plot and maybe a laugh."
• Collider's Brian Orndorf: "If the filmmaking fails to a certain degree, the charisma of the performers picks up the slack."
• Kevin Carr at FilmSchoolRejects: "I thought there were some pretty funny moments, most of them courtesy of Luis Guzman and John Leguizamo."...

The players: Director: Alfredo De Villa, Writers: Rick Najera, Alison Swan, Ted Perkins-Lopez, Cast: John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez, Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz, Alfred Molina
Facts of interest: De Villa also directed "Adrift in Manhattan."
The plot: Nothing goes according to plan when the Rodriguez family comes together to celebrate the holidays.
Our thoughts: “Nothing Like the Holidays” is a good alternative to “Four Christmases.” It’s not as silly or as mainstream, but it promotes a similar holiday spirit and will certainly entertain those looking for exactly that. It’s a harmless little film without big surprises, but it has its charm, no doubt.

Serviceable holiday romp thrives on cast
Is it really a cynical gesture to cast Hispanics in the reunion holiday-comedy staple and call it new? It doesn’t have to be, and it isn’t really in Nothing Like the Holidays, the cheerfully broad new comedy about a Puerto Rican family whose grown children return to Chicago for Christmas. The conventions of these films have become so streamlined that each new title is clearly an attempt to cash in on the goodwill of the season, and this risk-free, harmless movie’s rewrite of the usual formula is no more dishonorable than any of the annual offenders.

Twentieth Century Fox's remake of the science fiction classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" unspools into a big 3,560 venues as the widest opener this weekend. Chicago – When it was still called “Humboldt Park” and was probably more closely related to Chicago’s thriving Hispanic neighborhood, Alfredo De Villa’s “Nothing Like the Holidays” was probably a lot more interesting than the cookie-cutter dramedy that ended up on the big screen.
Rating: 2.5/5.0 Just as the title was turned more generic, “Holidays” became a film that we’ve seen dozens of times before. It’s a typical family holiday movie that lives and dies on the likeability of its extensive ensemble cast, but that, unfortunately, sacrifices its believable characters due to its emphasis on quantity over quality. Like last year’s “This Christmas”, every character comes to the dinner table not with a fruitcake but with a problem that audiences can expect to be resolved before the credits roll.

Nothing Like The Holidays Directed by: Alfredo De Villa Cast: Freddy Rodriguez, Elisabeth Pena, John Leguizamo, Luis Guzman, Debra Messing Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins Rating: PG-13 Plot: An eccentric Latin-American family living in the Puerto Rican area of Chicago celebrates Christmas and various life lessons that enhance the holiday spirit. Who’s It For?: Properly, this film isn't limited to an audience of a particular background. However, if you've already got a favorite family Christmas movie, (mine's National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) there are slim chances that this will be any type of a replacement. Hollywood is still waiting to unwrap most of its Christmas offerings, but the boxoffice should get an early holiday present this weekend as Fox launches the sci-fi-themed "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in 3,559 theaters, including 123 Imax screens.
The PG-13 remake, directed by Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose"), combines a classic title -- the original 1951 movie -- with civilization-threatening special effects that suggest images from such previous Fox hits as "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow."
Keanu Reeves plays the otherworldly visitor Klaatu, embodied by Michael Rennie in the original, as the actor returns to the sci-fi arena that served him well with the "Matrix" movies and "Constantine." As an added attraction to further entice fanboys to rush the multiplexes, Fox has attached a first-look trailer for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Things really shift into high gear this week when a bumper crop of award season heavy-hitters and indies stream into theaters, as well as a cadre of movie stars doing what they do best - whether that's Keanu Reeves acting alien, Clint Eastwood brandishing his trademark scowl, or Benicio Del Toro doing his own brand of mumblecore while waging war against fascists.

The future of the United States economy doesn’t look too bright, but it certainly doesn’t look as grim as in Barthelemy Grossmann’s upcoming horror thriller “Fortuna.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film is set in 2100 and envisions an Earth where a collapsed economy and climate crises have eliminated the middle class, leaving a few very wealthy and the teeming masses in severe poverty.
In order to prevent from people from going nuts, the elite sets up a bloody game where one in a thousand receives the opportunity to join the upper class. Little to the contestants know they’re in for something deadly.
Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez have signed on to star in the project. Together with Grossmann, they will play three desperate men competing for the jackpot.

The trailers for the first Christmas flicks this year really start to pour in this week, and Yahoo! recently posted the preview for Alfredo De Villa's "Nothing Like the Holidays," which follows a family struggling with all kinds of troubles and surprises during Christmas time.
John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Freddy Rodriguez, Melonie Diaz, Jay Hernandez and Luis Guzmán star. "Nothing Like the Holidays" opens Nov. 21, 2008. Somehow I feel I've seen this specific kind of movie many many times before. Oh well, happy holidays everybody. As usual, Christmas comes way early at the movies, and I still don't know why. To get everybody in the mood, maybe? In November already? Enjoy!

In announcing the competition slate for the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, Geoffrey Gilmore, its longtime director, said he sees the beginning of a new era in independent filmmaking. "Filmmakers are undergoing a massive expansion in perspective and aesthetic qualities," he said. "Where once independence meant a detachment, a kind of navel-gazing, that doesn't exist right now. Instead, there is engagement and innovation. Filmmakers are going out and engaging the real world in terms of subject matter, vision and innovative storytelling."
Old categories of films long a staple of Sundance -- the coming-of-age picture or the dysfunctional family drama -- are no longer applicable to the competition films in the upcoming festival, Gilmore insisted. These new films tend to be more optimistic about the future, both politically and personally. Where once the independent world created its films almost in reaction to Hollywood and its happy endings, the new independents are drawing on the traditions of the American independent film itself. So if one thing characterizes Sundance 2007, Gilmore said, it is "freshness."
For the festival -- which runs Jan. 18-28 in Park City, Sundance, Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah -- programrs looked at a mind-boggling 3,287 feature submissions. That includes 1,852 U.S. films and 1,435 international movies, an increase over the previous year, when 1,764 U.S. features and 1,384 international films were considered.
The 122 feature films selected include 82 world premieres, 24 North American premieres and 10 U.S. premieres representing 25 countries. The competition section is divided into dramatic and documentary sections for both Independent Film -- meaning American films -- and World Cinema. Each section will present 16 features, for a total of 64 films that screen in competition.
While the number of first-time filmmakers is down, programrs have discovered the phenomenon of filmmakers in "new guises." So Chris Smith, whose American Movie won the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, returns in dramatic competition with The Pool, a Hindi-language film set in Goa, India.
"You anticipate what a Chris Smith movie is, then you look at 'The Pool' and you say, 'That's Chris Smith?' " Gilmore said. He added that no fewer than four of the films in the dramatic competition are in languages other than English.
"American independent filmmakers are reaching out and changing the parameters that used to so easily encapsulate them," Gilmore said. "They are redefining what American independent film is."
Diversity is another factor, but not in the way Sundance programrs formerly used the word. Four Sheets to the Wind was developed in the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Lab by Sterlin Harjo, an Oklahoma resident and descendent of the Seminole and Creek tribes. Adrift in Manhattan from director Alfredo De Villa, who is Latino, focuses on an eye doctor and an aging artist losing his eyesight.
"These are complicated and sophisticated films," Gilmore said. "You can't call them Native-American or Latino films. They no longer are reducible to their origins. They no longer represent a particular community, but are simply American independent works."
Dramatic competition presents a range of subjects from personal stories about life in suburban and small-town America to stories taking place outside the U.S. The documentary competition naturally has films focused on the country's current travails in Iraq, such as Charles Ferguson's No End in Sight and Rory Kennedy's Ghosts of Abu Ghraib, but also on aspects of World War II in Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman's Nanking and Steven Okazaki's "White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki."
Each of the 16 films in dramatic and documentary categories is a world premiere. Programrs saw 856 films submitted for the documentary competition, while 996 features were submitted for the dramatic competition.
Sundance launched the world competition categories in 2005 to bolster the prominence of the international films at a festival long seen as a showcase for American indie films. Director of programming John Cooper said that with the upcoming festival "we now feel the benefit of all the travel we've done (to select films). We have hit our stride with a well-rounded program. Of the 16 films, 13 countries are represented. We found the best films, not necessarily world premieres, to rebuild the respect for foreign films in the U.S."
This year's selections include stories about a writer from China, a nomad in Mongolia, a peasant in Burkina Faso and the aftermath of crime and war in Sierra Leone.
The 2006 Grand Jury Prize winner for "13 (Tzameti)", Gela Babluani, a French director born in Georgia, will return to Park City with The Legacy, a film he made with his father, Temur Babluani. The film looks at culture shock when three French hipsters travel through rural Georgia.
John Carney's Once is a modern-day musical set in Dublin. The Israeli-German production, Sweet Mud (Adama Meshugaat) by Dror Shaul, is Israel's submission for the foreign-language Oscar.
Meanwhile, longtime British documentarian Nick Broomfield ("Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer," "Kurt & Courtney") will showcase Ghosts, a fictional tale of an illegal Chinese immigrant in the U.K.
Traditionally, international films meant art films in the U.S., Gilmore said. "Now these are not necessarily art films. 'Amelie' and 'Downfall' represent a new edge of where international filmmaking is going. It now embraces genre filmmaking all over the world, not just in Asia. Our selections include art, genre films, melodramas and minimalist works that should redefine what international film is in the U.S."
"The films in the world cinema competition contain complex stories that embrace full visions of life and explore topics that transcend the confines of personal, geographic and artistic borders," Cooper said.
The complete list of titles announced Wednesday follows.
Dramatic Competition:
ADRIFT IN MANHATTAN (Director: Alfredo de Villa; Screenwriters: Nat Moss, Alfredo De Villa) -- Set in New York City, a grieving eye doctor is forced to take a closer look at her life; an aging artist confronts the loss of his eyesight, and a young photographer battles his innermost demons. World premiere.
BROKEN ENGLISH (Director and Screenwriter: Zoe Cassavetes) -- A young woman in her thirties finds herself surrounded by friends who are married, in relationships or with children. She unexpectedly meets a quirky Frenchman who opens her eyes to a lot more than love. World premiere.
FOUR SHEETS TO THE WIND (Director and Screenwriter: Sterlin Harjo) -- Cufe Smallhill finds his father dead. Fulfilling a dying wish, he disposes of the body in the family pond and sets off to begin a new life in the big city of Tulsa. World premiere.
THE GOOD LIFE (Director and Screenwriter: Steve Berra) -- A story about a "mostly normal" young man whose small town existence running a faded movie palace is shaken when he comes in contact with a mysterious young woman. World premiere.
GRACE IS GONE (Director and Screenwriter: James C. Strouse) -- A young father learns that his wife has been killed in Iraq and must find the courage to tell his two young daughters the news. World premiere.
JOSHUA (Director: George Ratliff; Screenwriters: David Gilbert, George Ratliff) -- A successful, young Manhattan family is torn apart by the machinations of Joshua, their eight-year-old prodigy, when his newborn baby sister comes home from the hospital. World premiere.
NEVER FOREVER (Director and Screenwriter: Gina Kim) -- When an American woman and her Asian-American husband discover they are unable to conceive, she begins a clandestine relationship with an attractive stranger in a desperate attempt to save her marriage. World premiere.
ON THE ROAD WITH JUDAS (Director and Screenwriter: JJ Lask) -- Reality, fiction and the notions of storytelling intertwine in this narrative about a young thief and the woman he loves.
