- He was working a day job at a warehouse, and writing songs with Roy Orbison in his spare time. One day, Orbison's wife, Claudette, came into the room where the men were working. After she left, Dees said to Orbison, "Pretty woman don't need no money." They laughed, and started writing. Within minutes they had written "Oh, Pretty Woman".
- Dees wrote several other songs with Orbison, including another hit, "It's Over," as well as songs for Loretta Lynn, Glen Campbell, and others. He also recorded solo albums.
