You wish to have the curse reversed? You’ll need to win a Tony first! Brian d’Arcy James gave an impressive performance as the Baker in the recent revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Into the Woods.” Despite an impressive stage career, James has never won a Tony Award. That could all change thanks to one of the biggest hits of the 2022-23 Broadway season, and he would break a major Tony stat in the process.
James has amassed a whopping 15 Broadway credits over the course of his career, including “Into the Woods.” He scored his first Tony nomination for the musical “Sweet Smell of Success” in 2002 before picking up additional bids as the titular ogre in “Shrek the Musical” (2010) and for the farce “Something Rotten!” (2015).
The actor also had a hand in shaping characters from two Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning musicals. He originated the roles of Dan...

Once upon a time television was where people who used to be in the movies went to die. I’m not qualified to pinpoint the exact moment where that all changed, but it definitely has. Arguably American cable channel HBO has trumped the movies, wedding the slick production values and top talent of Hollywood with a format that allows for vastly extended running times. This has enabled complex and incredibly dense dramas (like The Wire, Deadwood and now Michael Mann’s Luck) to flourish, telling stories that just wouldn’t fit comfortably into two hours – aimed at a mature audience driven from the multiplex. Martin Scorsese – director of the pilot episode of the phenomenal Boardwalk Empire – has likened this elongated form to the novel, effectively positioning movies as short stories by comparison.

There are those who would bemoan the idea that Boardwalk Empire pours itself at a slow pace. Well, to them I say…you’re absolutely right. However, like a smooth whiskey cascading down the ice, “A Dangerous Maid” will keep whetting your anticipation.
Poor Lucy Danziger (Paz de la Huerta) feels increasingly like a punching bag for Boardwalk Empire, particularly when paired with the transcendentally condesecending Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon), but in spite of her despair “A Dangerous Maid” finally gives Lucy a chance to shine.
Most of “A Dangerous Maid” sees the Boardwalk Empire players yearning for something in the distance just beyond their reach, whether its Lucy longing for the music across the alley, Margaret, Richard and Al Capone all longing for family relations they’ll never have, or Nucky trying to claw his way out of a deepening grave. The only real action comes when our...
