“We believe that European filmmaking reflects Europe’s positive values. That it can inspire ambition and renewal in Europe’s cultural policies. Europe isn’t just jobs, territories, markets and consumers, European culture also supports multiple identities, democracy and freedom of expression,” the petition said.
Published to coincide with the European Film Forum in Cannes on Monday, it highlighted four key areas where the European Union needed to renew and reinforce its legislation to protect European culture.

The European Commission’s plans for copyright reform have been discussed today (Friday Nov 13) at a meeting hosted by the EC’s vice-president Andrus Ansip in Brussels with a delegation of filmmakers, including Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius and Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier.
The delegation also included UniFrance Films president Jean-Paul Salomé, German screenwriter Fred Breinersdorfer (co-screenwriter of the Berlinale Competition title 13 Minutes), Belgian actor-writer-director Lucas Belvaux, Polish producer-director Dariusz Jabłoński, vice-president of the European Producers Club, and the French filmmakers Eric Lartigau (La Famille Bélier) and Dante Desarthe (Le système de Ponzi), co-presidents of the L’Arp producers’ association, and Denmark’s Annette J. This year's 19th Colcoa French Film Festival will run April 20-28 at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. Colcoa will open with the North American Premiere of Yann Gozlan's thriller "A Perfect Man," starring Pierre Niney and Ana Girardot, who starred in the creepy French TV series "The Returned." The Franco-American Cultural Fund on Tuesday announced the line-up for 19th Colcoa French Film Festival, set to run in West Hollywood from April 20-28.
The event will kick off with the North American Premiere of Yann Gozlan’s thriller A Perfect Man (pictured) starring Pierre Niney and Ana Girardot and close with a yet-to-be-announced feature and the international premiere of Erick Zonca’s television competition selection White Soldier.
The expanded nine-day event will showcase a record 68 films, of which three are world premieres, seven international premieres, 14 North American or Us Premieres and 16 West Coast premieres.
The feature category includes the world premiere of Clovis Cornillac’s rom-com Blind Date and the international premieres of Emmanuel Mouret’s rom-com Caprice and Elodie Namer’s The Tournament.

French cinema industry guild L’Arp and its counterparts in the Us have condemned a terrorist attack on the Paris offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, in which 12 people were shot dead by two armed gunmen. At least four people were critically wounded in the attack.
At time of writing early on Thursday morning local time two men remained at large. They were identified as brothers Cherif Kouachi and Said Kouachi and are understood to be in their 30s.
