Pop history is littered with prolific partnerships, but the artist-producer pairing is arguably one of the most indispensable. Not only can an intrepid knob-twirler coax the best out of an artist, the most fruitful of these collaborations are often reciprocal. Think George Martin and the Beatles; Timbaland and Missy Elliott; or Jam & Lewis and Janet Jackson. Taylor Swift and former Fun guitarist-drummer Jack Antonoff have both achieved commercial and critical success outside of their work together, but their alliance over the last several years has, more often than not, resulted in pop magic.
The duo first worked together over a decade ago, on the unassuming “Sweeter Than Fiction,” a song from the British-American film One Chance. The following year, Antonoff co-wrote and co-produced three tracks for Swift’s blockbuster album 1989, the success of which propelled him to the top of every A&r exec’s wish list, helming tracks for Pink,...

Debuting at Las Vegas’s CinemaCon – and online soon thereafter – the trailer for Todd Phillips’s follow-up to ‘Joker,’ the Best Picture nominee that won Joaquin Phoenix the Best Actor Oscar, blew up the internet late Tuesday night. The two-and-a-half-minute promo answered many lingering questions about the film.
As the title suggests, it’s very much about the mad love shared between Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga’s Harlene Quinzel/Harley Quinn. In DC Comics lore, Quinn starts as a psychiatrist who is then lured into Joker’s orbit; here it appears that she’s already one of his fellow inmates at Arkham Asylum when they meet.
Recent news leaks and some photos suggested that the film, which won the top prize at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, would be a “jukebox musical.” It’s still a little unclear just how much singing-and-hoofin’ Phoenix and Gaga will do,...

“Joker: Folie à Deux” drops its first trailer, with Joaquin Phoenix reprising his award-winning supervillain role. Lady Gaga will be playing Dr. Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn. Given Gaga’s New York roots, I expected her to have a Brooklyn accent, but she didn’t. Don’t expect her to sound like Arleen Sorkin, Tara Strong, or Margot Robbie’s version. Perhaps the accent isn’t present yet because she hasn’t fully transitioned into Harley; she’s still the psychiatric doctor. Zazie Beetz who is Joker’s love interest Sophie Dumond in the first film will also return. Are we going to have a love triangle? The first film finally gave Joaquin Phoenix his flowers because it won him Best Actor at the Oscars and other Award Winning bodies. It is hard to top the first movie so they decided to try something new with this sequel. It is going to be a musical.

The coaches of The Voice knew exactly the song they needed to perform to kick off the new season.
Just weeks ago, judges Chance the Rapper, John Legend, Reba McEntire, and Dan + Shay came together for a powerful, uplifting rendition of “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” backed by a massive choir. On Wednesday, The Voice shared a behind-the-scenes video of how it all happened.
“We went with ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’ because that’s what the world needs right now,” said Chance in the video.

Ringo Starr has been a professional musician for years and has dedicated his life to creating and consuming rock music. In the early 1960s, when The Beatles rose to fame, they had the opportunity to see and meet many other bands. One night, they attended a concert in Miami for a band Starr loved. He was disgusted by the way other people were enjoying the music, though.
Ringo Starr was not happy to see people dancing to rock music
In 1964, The Beatles went to America. As they traveled around the country, they often crossed paths with the American band The Coasters.
“When we were in New York, The Coasters were on there, and then when we were in Florida, they were there, too,” George Harrison said in The Beatles Anthology. “Everywhere we went, even when we were in California, The Coasters were advertised.”

As is tradition, the coaches of The Voice have gathered for a special group performance ahead of the singing competition’s return next week.
This time around, the song of choice was Jackie DeShannon’s 1969 classic “Put a Little Love In Your Heart” (which Annie Lennox and Al Green also turned into a hit in 1988). Judges Chance the Rapper, John Legend, Reba McEntire, and Dan + Shay turned in a rousing rendition of the uplifting tune, getting an extra assist from a full-throated choir.

If there’s a pop musician of the last 60 years who deserves a great documentary, it’s Antonio Carlos Jobim. Some might bristle at my description of him as “pop.” In Brazil, where Jobim, one of the prime architects of bossa nova, is considered a national treasure, he’s simply thought of as a composer, placed on a pedestal along with classical Brazilian composers like Heitor Villa-Lobos. Jobim’s gorgeously complex chord structures — the aural equivalent of melty-colored Impressionist paintings — were arguably more jazz than pop.
Yet we’re long past the point where pop can’t include all that. Just consider Steely Dan’s “Aja,” an album of luminous jazz modalities that also happens to be the purest pop. Jobim, though he wrote in assorted forms, was quintessentially a composer of pop songs, and they had a tranquil forlorn incandescence all their own. There was something in the air...

John Lennon proposed to his first wife, Cynthia Lennon, when he learned she was pregnant. They’d been together for years, but he hadn’t wanted to commit in that way, finding it embarrassing to have a wife and child. Even after they tied the knot, though, Lennon didn’t fully commit to her. He cheated multiple times throughout their relationship. According to those close to him, he barely even tried to hide it. His school friend said Lennon had no shame about his infidelity.
John Lennon frequently cheated on his first wife
Lennon and Cynthia married in 1962. Per the book The Love You Make by Peter Brown and Steven Gaines, when their marriage ended in 1966, he admitted to her that he had cheated multiple times.
“John had confessed to dozens of infidelities committed during the eight years of their marriage, none of which she had suspected. He claimed in...

In 1973, John Lennon separated from Yoko Ono and began a relationship with the couple’s assistant, May Pang. Ono was aware of this; according to Pang, Ono got them together in the first place. After a whirlwind 18-month affair, Lennon returned to his wife, however. While he wrote off the affair and the events surrounding it as temporary confusion, Pang said she continued to see him in the years after their relationship ended.

When Ono first told Pang she wanted her to begin a relationship with Lennon, she resisted. Pang said she didn’t want to disrespect their marriage, even though she recognized they were having problems. Eventually, though, Lennon charmed her, and they moved in together.

John Lennon and his first wife Cynthia got together when they were teenagers. When The Beatles blew up, both of their lives changed forever. There was no going back. And at some point in the midst of the newfound chaos of being famous, John began to stray from his teenage sweetheart with a groupie or two… or 300.

There always seemed to be women vying for John, and that only magnified times 10 when he became famous. Everyone from groupies to actors to journalists had taken their shots with the Beatle. According to The Love You Make by Peter Brown and Steven Gaines, only a few weeks prior to Cynthia discovering John with Yoko in their home he had confessed to all of his infidelities.

The Library of Congress announced the newcomers, a roster that also includes Mariah Carey’s modern holiday classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and the original 1985 theme from the Super Mario Bros. video game. The latter becomes the first music from a video game to enter the registry.
In all, 25 albums, singles and other recordings were added to the roster, representing a time span of more than a century. See the complete list below.

Songwriter, composer, producer and arranger Burt Bacharach, a dominant force in American popular music for half a century, died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 94.
Bacharach’s publicist Tina Brausam revealed the news on Thursday.
As a tunesmith, the nonpareil melodist Bacharach found fame in every medium.
His songs — many of them written with lyricist Hal David — became chart-topping successes, particularly in the hands of vocalist Dionne Warwick. Among ’60s songwriting duos, only Lennon-McCartney rivaled Bacharach-David in terms of commercial and artistic achievement. Bacharach collected six Grammys as a writer, arranger and performer from 1967-2005.
His music was ubiquitous on screens both big and small in the ’60s and ’70s, and he was recognized by the Academy Awards and Golden Globes for his work on “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) and “Arthur” (1981). He collected a 1971 Emmy for a TV recital of his work.

Fitness for the Prosecution: Von Horn Sings Song for the Lonely in the Digital Age
In the digital age, perhaps now more than ever, love is still the only thing there’s just too little of, to borrow from the famed Bacharach tune which Jackie DeShannon recorded way back in 1965. It’s certainly the elusive absence gnawing the considerable void of the lead character in Magnus von Horn’s increasingly poignant sophomore film Sweat, which focuses on the somewhat isolating effect of social media stardom on the life of a fitness instructor/influencer in Warsaw. If Swedish helmer von Horn’s 2015 debut The Here After (a drama which shares similar themes with last year’s Waves from Trey Edward Shults) brought him back to his native country, his latest film displays an astute cross-cultural straddling in a feature which explores universal motifs in decidedly Polish parameters.…

“America’s Got Talent” season 15 continues on June 9 with another two-hour episode showcasing the best (and worst) auditions. In this phase of “Agt,” an act needs at least three of the four judges to give them a “yes” vote to advance to the next round. If two or more judges buzz the act, it is immediately eliminated.
Each judge, along with host Terry Crews, has one chance to hit the “golden buzzer” and send an act straight through to the live performances. Terry was inspired to press his golden buzzer on the season 15 premiere by the performance of the Voices of Our City Choir. Their mission is to serve the homeless community of San Diego. In their audition they sang “Sounds of the Sidewalk,” an original tune written and produced through their songwriting clinic. The “America’s Got Talent” winners list is full of solo singers. In fact, there are seven so far throughout the show’s 15-year run: Bianca Ryan (Season 1), Neal E. Boyd (Season 3), Kevin Skinner (Season 4), Michael Grimm (Season 5), Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. (Season 6), Grace VanderWaal (Season 11) and Kodi Lee (Season 14). However, a singing group has never prevailed … until now? Ahead of Tuesday’s third episode, NBC has released a sneak peek video of Resound, a humble singing trio from Richmond, Virginia (watch above). Do they have what it takes to make “Agt” history?

Musical artists keep blessing our ears with virtual performances in these times of social distancing, and Sam Smith is the latest to get in on the action. The singer, songwriter, and angel on Earth just crooned their own rendition of "What the World Needs Now Is Love," a 1965 hit popularized by Jackie DeShannon. The song features rather poignant and timely lyrics, most notably including the opening line: "What the world needs now is love, sweet love. It's the only thing that there's just too little of."
When Smith shared the heavenly cover on Instagram, they captioned the video, "Just woke up. Having a coffee and felt like singing . . . I haven't felt like singing for a few weeks now. Feels good. Have a beautiful day today everyone. The sun is out for you." Consider our spirits lifted. Hear Smith's full cover in the video ahead, and kindly join us in crossing...

Taylor Swift didn’t have the best Grammy nominations morning last Tuesday, getting snubbed in Album of the Year for “Lover” and Record of the Year for “You Need to Calm Down.” Still, three nominations ain’t too shabby, and a win for Song of the Year for the title track from “Lover” would be very, very notable.
If she prevails, Swift would be just the fifth solo woman to win Song of the Year and the first since 2008. Yup, you can count on one hand the number of solo women who’ve taken home the award, which goes to the songwriter(s). Since the inception of the category in 1959, the only solo female songwriters to triumph are Carole King for her and James Taylor‘s classic “You’ve Got a Friend” in 1972, Julie Gold for Bette Midler‘s “From a Distance” in 1991, Alicia Keys for “Fallin'” in 2002, and the...

Six of the eight artists still in the running on “The Voice” saw their performance on Monday’s show make the top 10 on iTunes as of noon on Tuesday. That means each will get the benefit of the vote multiplier. That should help them avoid being in the bottom two, who will be eliminated right away when Carson Daly reveals the results on the May 15 episode.
That dubious distinction is likely to go to Jackie Foster and Rayshun Lamarr. Neither of these artists saw their tracks do well in the overnight sales figures from iTunes. Lamarr, who has had to sing for survival for two of the past three weeks, only sold enough of his version of John Lennon‘s classic “Imagine” to make it to #36. Foster foundered with her cover of Whitesnake‘s “Here I Go Again,” moving only enough units to get to #48.

Foster foundered with her cover of Whitesnake‘s “Here I Go Again,” moving only enough units to get to #48.

On Monday’s episode of “The Voice,” the Top 8 artists sang one solo apiece. The goal for each contestant was to make it into the top 10 on iTunes by Tuesday at noon Et so that they reaped the benefit of a vote multiplier. We can report that a whopping six of the acts registered enough sales to earn this bonus.
They are: Kyla Jade with her version of “Let It Be” by The Beatles; Britton Buchanan for his rendition of “The Rising” by Bruce Springsteen; Brynn Cartelli for her take on the Jackie DeShannon classic “What the World Needs Now is Love”; Kaleb Lee with the traditional “It is Well With My Soul”; Pryor Baird with his performance of “Change the World” by Eric Clapton; and Spensha Baker with the Maren Morris hit “My Church.”

The Top 8 artists on “The Voice” each sang one solo on the two-hour episode on Monday May 14. The goal for each of these would-be winners of season 14 is to make it into the top 10 on iTunes by Tuesday morning so that they can reap the benefit of a vote multiplier. The bottom three vote-getters as revealed by host Carson Daly will have to sing for the Instant Save on Tuesday’s show.
That is what happened last week to Christiana Danielle from Team Alicia Keys and both Rayshun Lamarr and Jackie Verna from Team Adam Levine. Each had to sing one more song to try and win votes cast by viewers via Twitter. Lamarr ended up winning the popular vote with his cover of the 1973 Marvin Gaye standard “Let’s Get It On” and, thereby, avoided elimination.

On the May 14 episode of “The Voice,” the Top 8 will take to the stage to sing for America’s votes. The goal of each artist is to make it into the top 10 of iTunes by noon on Tuesday in order to reap the benefits of the vote multiplier. The three contestants with the highest vote totals as revealed by Carson Daly on Tuesday’s show are guaranteed a spot in next week’s finals. The two acts with the lowest tallies are automatically eliminated. The three in the middle of the leaderboard will sing once more in the hopes of winning the one remaining slot via the Instant Save.
Of the four coaches, only Blake Shelton still has all three of the artists that he brought to this stage of the competition. Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys are down to two apiece while Adam Levine has only one contestant still standing.

This time on the podcast, Scott is joined by David Blakeslee to discuss Roberto Rossellini’s The Flowers of St. Francis.
About the film:
In a series of simple and joyous vignettes, director Roberto Rossellini and co-writer Federico Fellini lovingly convey the universal teachings of the People’s Saint: humility, compassion, faith, and sacrifice. Gorgeously photographed to evoke the medieval paintings of Saint Francis’s time, and cast with monks from the Nocera Inferiore Monastery, The Flowers of St. Francis is a timeless and moving portrait of the search for spiritual enlightenment.

Happy 70th birthday to the legendary singer/songwriter/painter/soul of Saskatoon/Parisian free man Joni Mitchell. Props to the woman for years of candor about the music business and her own restless musical evolution. When both Charles Mingus and Prince care to toast your work, you might be awesome.
In the age of The Kids Are All Right, emotional Joni Mitchell covers may seem a tad trite, but let me remind you: The woman’s songs are unbelievable, and it’s often wonderful to hear him them sung and reinterpreted by other artists. It can also be a jarring experience as you’ll hear with a couple of entries on this list, but let’s explore: 10 Joni Mitchell covers worth hearing.
1. Diana Krall, “A Case of You”

Can you guess our pick for the best performance of the season? Better yet: Can you guess the One male vocalist who made our list?
Maybe you’re done with the twelfth season of American Idol, but I’m not. Before we officially switch off our DVR season pass and lock ourselves in for So You Think You Can Dance, let’s take one last look at the low-rated, but luckily lady-dominated season and pick the 10 best performances.
10. Kree Harrison, “What the World Needs Now”
Kree really impressed me with song choices early on in the series. This girl chose two Susan Tedeschi songs. She picked an effing Faith Hill song that ended up being great and original. And most impressively, she chose this sung-to-death Bacharach tune and improved on its original version (by the lovable Jackie DeShannon) by rendering the song in her glum, disarmingly unembellished voice. Starting out in a cappella?...

Look, maybe you and your stepson are right and American Idol has jumped the shark. I accept your wrongness/common sense. But if you tuned in last night to the Top 6's "Burt Bacharach/Songs You Wish You Wrote"-themed evening, you can't deny that it delivered everything that has ever mattered about American Idol, including vocal triumphs, ferocious attitude, the dismal failure of a teenage dandy, Randy Jackson's gift for thoughts, 17-year-olds being forced to perform the songs of Jackie DeShannon, and Ryan Seacrest's attempts at empathy. Every time he nervously puts his hand on Lazaro's shoulder, it's like a deleted scene from Speilberg's A.I. is upon us.
Then there's the other emotionally troubled member of the American Idol brain surgeon gallery: Mariah Carey. I've defended her long enough and still believe she delivers an iota's worth of real advice every 15 minutes or so, but man,...

Los Angeles — Hal David, the stylish, heartfelt lyricist who teamed with Burt Bacharach on dozens of timeless songs for movies, television and a variety of recording artists in the 1960s and beyond, has died. He was 91.
David died of complications from a stroke Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his wife Eunice David.
He had suffered a major stroke in March and was stricken again on Tuesday, she said.
"Even at the end, Hal always had a song in his head," Eunice David said. "He was always writing notes, or asking me to take a note down, so he wouldn't forget a lyric."
Bacharach and David were among the most successful teams in modern history, with top 40 hits including "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "That's What Friends Are For." Although most associated with Dionne Warwick, their...

We're owed an apology after last night's episode of Mad Men, because it just re-confirmed everything we know about this klatch of swingin' victims: Betty's petty, Pete is pete-thetic, Megan is a responsible and understanding diplomat in the nightmarish Draper cult, Peggy is Lady Bird Johnson's superfly niece, and Roger is a thin rectangle with some silver on it. Oh, and Don? He is Don right now, which is neither a compliment nor an insult. He simply remains the most static and uninteresting character on the show, and he shows no sign of upending his unthinkably monotonous arc. Fortunately, I was still able to unearth five fuh-haaaaabulous moments from last night's investigation of Betty's lingering resentment, Ginsberg's quirky rage, and Sally Draper's potential to be an adorable version of Aileen Wuornos someday. Let's clap at some fabulous things, gents and gentleladies.
1. Forget 1966: Megan's autumnal ensemble is all ready for the '70s.

Thank God Jackie DeShannon wasn’t singing about zombies in 1965′s What the World Needs Now is Love, because for the love of the genre, do we really need to clog up more shelf space at home, at Best Buy, at Redbox, with more zombie movies?
Even the most easy-to-please zombie fan might be a little worn out recently, and a sequel to a lackluster Quarantine doesn’t exactly excite the idea of another zombie movie. Director John Pogue keeps everything rather simple, perhaps too simple, with every tried-and-true staple of the zombie movie used, and again, perhaps abused. Even so, with all of this mentioned, Quarantine 2: Terminal kept its ambitions low, and in turn, salvages most of our eye-rolling at another Dtv zombie movie (it hits some screens theatrical for that old contractual obligations).

Well now, that was much better! (Thanks to writer Nancy Oliver.) But I really want to thank the delightful Denis O'Hare and James Frain who had me gleefully chortling through half the episode. That's the half without Sam and family, Arlene, Jason, Sookie and Alcide. After a real dark turn last hour, Frain set Franklin's emotions free and he was riotously all over the place. Meanwhile, O'Hare was everything that an evil overlord should be: wry, sarcastic, bloodthirsty, decisive, smarter than and ten steps ahead of his subjects.

The Multiverse Theory has nothing to do with lengthy poetry. Also known as "eternal inflation" -- a concept to which all payers of college tuition can relate -- it suggests that our universe is but a nano-particle in an infinitely vast megacosm. If this is correct, then somewhere out there may be an Amerika identical to ours except for one thing: Great records that never made the pop charts on our shores -- whether due to a twist of fate or a lack of payola -- comprise the smash hits and timeless classics in that far-off realm. In Part 1, we traveled to a galaxy in which Judee Sill, Graham Parker, Jackie Deshannon and Bessie Banks were the brightest stars. In another corner of space-time, these are the golden oldies: 1. Jesse Winchester, Sham-a-Ling-Dong-Ding If you're looking for an echo, you can't beat...

London, June 19 – Phil Collins, former member of Genesis, has bagged the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame gala.
This year’s inducted songwriters include Leonard Cohen, Jackie DeShannon, David Foster, and R and B band Earth Wind and Fire.
“For a songwriter, it’s a huge honour. I was very surprised when I got the news,” the BBC quoted Collins as saying.
The legendary musician said that that when organisers contacted him regarding the award, he thought he would be giving away the award, not receiving it.That’s something that I never thought.

Having once rumored to be more than a friend with Taylor Swift, John Mayer has made public his admiration toward the songstress. At the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York on Thursday night, June 17, the "Your Body Is a Wonderland" hitmaker praises the country singer of being fearless in creating songs.
Before presenting the Hal David Starlight award to the "You Belong with Me" singer, the 32-year-old singer told the crowd, "I'd always ask everyone who has ever worked with her 'who is actually writing those songs?' " He continued on, "I got the chance to one night ask her. We sat down, started playing guitars, and ... she writes those songs. I've never seen a more fearless creator."
In introducing the 20-year-old, the former boyfriend of Jennifer Aniston also gushed, "She's no accident." He added, "You could put her in a time machine in any era and she would have a hit record.

Rocker John Mayer hailed Taylor Swift's lyrical prowess at the Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday, June 17 by insisting her huge success is "no accident". The Grammy-winning country sensation was honored with the Hal David Straight Award, an accolade given to promising young songwriters, for her work on hit tunes like "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me".
And the 20 year old was given the ultimate praise by Mayer as he introduced Swift to the stage to present her with the award at a celebratory dinner in New York. The Inspirational Song choices are available on iTunes, so we thought we'd offer some suggestions for the "American Idol" Top 7.
We will admit that the song list is rather weird -- some of the songs don't exactly strike us as "inspirational," plus you have to automatically discount certain songs. For example...
The Idols should probably steer clear of the other Idol songs. Like "A Moment Like This" is the No. 1 Kelly Clarkson "Idol" moment, so we're not sure they should try that one. Doing other Idol hits is just a little too meta. We'd call that a big no-no.
Then there are the over-played barf-worthy songs like "Greatest Love of All" and "That's What Friends Are For." We'd advise steering clear of those too, especially since "Greatest Love" should just be retired after Cordelia Chase did it for the "Buffy" talent show. Then there are a few duets on the list,...

Leonard Cohen and producer/composer David Foster will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2010. The 75-year-old "Bird on the Wire" singer has endured a difficult few months after collapsing onstage in Spain in 2009 and postponing a string of European concerts in early February to recover from a sports-related injury, but he will be saluted by the prestigious organization this summer, when he joins Foster and Earth Wind and Fire's members Maurice White, Philip Bailey and Verdine White among the songwriting inductees.
Jackie DeShannon, Johnny Mandel, Larry Dunn and Al McKay will also be honored at the gala. Hall of Fame chairman Hal David says, "Our 2010 inductees are truly representational of the heart and soul of the world's popular music soundtrack.
