Back to the Future star Lea Thompson stated that her mainstream film career ended after she had her kids. Thompson was a rising star through the 1980s but she was pushed to TV roles in the ’90s. Thompson found success in her role as Lorraine McFly in Robert Zemeckis’ three-part time travel flick. Before that, she was Tom Cruise’s pair in the 1983 film, All the Right Moves.

Will Trent will be back for another go-round. Amid strong ratings, ABC has renewed the drama series, starring Ramón Rodríguez, for a third season.
The renewal is not surprising, given the series’ ratings success. Season-to-date, Will Trent is a top performer across both linear and streaming, and is gaining ratings momentum among adults across all platforms, up each week since its second-season premiere on February 20. The sophomore drama recently reached its highest rated episode ever on March 5, delivering 9.02 million total viewers in seven-day metrics. Since Season 1, the show has reached nearly 70 million total viewers across platforms.
Will Trent received an early Season 2 renewal last year on the heels of Season 1’s promising performance. The series led the ABC freshman pack as the No. 1 new drama in total viewers (9.9 million) and adults 18-49 (1.65 rating) after 35 days of viewing across linear and digital platforms.

Duckie may have had it out for Blane, but the feud extended behind the scenes as well, as Jon Cryer and Andrew McCarthy did not jive while making teen movie classic Pretty in Pink. Now, Cryer says that has all settled…but who gets to go home with Andie?
Appearing on The View (per Entertainment Weekly), Jon Cryer said of Andrew McCarthy, “He and I famously did not get along when we were shooting Pretty in Pink…It was because there was tension. Interestingly, I saw him backstage and we had a lovely time, we had a great talk. Thank you!”
Cryer went on to detail why he and McCarthy didn’t get along during Pretty in Pink, citing issues that were far deeper that what we see onscreen. “At any rate, what I realize now, he wrote a terrific memoir called Brat, he was already struggling with alcoholism back...

Pretty in Pink has all the earmarks of a John Hughes film: It takes place in the Chicago suburbs, it features many of the Brat Pack actors who were regulars in his movies, and it was propelled by a vibrant, modern soundtrack. But Hughes didn’t actually direct Pretty in Pink — Howard Deutch did. That doesn’t mean, though, that Hughes’s fingerprints weren’t all over it. Speaking at a Steel City Con panel, Andrew McCarthy said that Hughes maintained a constant presence on the set, even though he wasn’t directing. Screen Media will be presenting the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film is based on Bob Rich’s novel “Looking Through Water” and is adapted for the screen by Rowdy Herrington (“Road House”). It follows a father who, in an attempt to reconnect with his estranged son, invites him to Belize to compete in a father-son fishing competition.

At this point, it's probably not a spoiler to say that a key "Yellowjackets" character is alive and somewhat well. That character is Vanessa "Van" Palmer (Lauren Ambrose and Liv Hewton), and if we're being honest, she's kind of living the best life out of all the show's plane crash survivors. Why is that? Well, she has her own video and DVD rental business, While You Were Streaming, smack dab in the middle of an undisclosed Pennsylvanian town. If you are even the slightest bit familiar with the work we do here at Slash Film dot com, it shouldn't be a surprise that we consider this the best possible fate to have.
What also isn't surprising is that Van has very good taste in movies, and also knows a thing or two about Hollywood's bizarre queer history. That's because While You Were Streaming is filled with Easter eggs to mainstream queer cinema,...

ABC has renewed drama series Will Trent, starring Ramón Rodríguez, for a second season. This marks the first ABC freshman show to get a renewal decision this season and comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale on May 2.
The early pickup does not come as a surprise. As Deadline has reported, Will Trent has been leading the ABC freshman pack and was considered a shoo-in for renewal. The series, from 20th Television, is ABC’s No. 1 new drama this season in total viewers (9.9 million) and adults 18-49 (1.65 rating) after 35 days of viewing across linear and digital platforms. It is the strongest series in the Tuesday 10 pm hour in total viewers — a longtime weak spot for ABC — since Big Sky during the 2020-2021 season. The series is improving its time slot over comparable weeks last season by 143% in total viewers and by 25% among adults 18-49 this season. It also gains...

It's an age-old question; what happens to all of the cool props and production pieces made during a movie? In some instances, the pieces are preserved in museums or in safekeeping by the studios, but in special cases, the items go home with the cast and crew. Henry Winkler famously kept some of his Fonzie jackets from "Happy Days," to later auction them off to support charity. "Some Kind of Wonderful" director Howard Deutch later married Lea Thompson, who starred in the film, and the couple kept one of the portraits made of her character to hang in their home. And now, "Infinity Pool" star Alexander Skarsgård is the proud owner of his own cloned head.
Directed by Brandon Cronenberg, "Infinity Pool" is a sci-fi horror film about a couple on vacation in a remote land with a zero-tolerance policy on crime who find themselves involved in a tragic accident.

Exclusive: Veteran TV lit agent Amy Retzinger is departing Verve where she has been a partner for more than 11 years. She just confirmed her exit in a company email with the subject “New Adventures…”
In it, Retzinger revealed that she is leaving agenting and plans to focus her efforts on a plastics reclamation startup, acting on her passion about eliminating single-use plastics. She also may pursue career opportunities in hospitality, I hear. This coming summer, Retzinger and her family will be moving to Portugal where their children have been enrolled in school for next fall.
Retzinger was the first agent outside Verve’s founding trio of Bryan Besser, Adam Levine, and Bill Weinstein to join the partnership two years after the agency was launched. She added TV lit experience to Verve, whose founding partners all hailed from the feature side of lit representation, and spearheaded the agency’s television strategy.

People forget how movies were consumed in the eighties and nineties. Now, you can stream millions of titles, which are available at the click of a button. But, back in the day, you had to rely on whatever was playing on TV or, if you were lucky, a trip to the local video store. One of the films that were ubiquitous was The Great Outdoors, a John Hughes-penned family comedy, which paired his favorite actor, John Candy, with the great Dan Aykroyd. The story of two feuding fathers spending time at a summer cabin, it has all the hallmarks of a great John Hughes movie. It has the slapstick, the silliness (the subtitled raccoons crack me up), and yes -even some heart in the unexpected climax.
Indeed, this became a staple of cable tv, and in fact, AMC still shows this movie pretty frequently. There’s something endlessly rewatchable about Hughes at his best,...

With the popularity of nostalgia-driven shows like "Stranger Things," interest in '80s pop culture always seems to be taking new and exciting directions. One such example is the fascination with the classic movies of the decade. Sure, everyone knows about the heavy hitters like "Back to the Future," " E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "The Terminator," and "The Breakfast Club." Yet, there are many other films from the 1980s that need respect, and that's what this list is about.
Here, we'll look at the movies of the '80s that deserve some love and devotion. These movies should become references in TV shows, have cosplays made of them, or at least be included in your next '80s movie marathon. So make sure to grab your favorite scrunchie, a bowl of popcorn, and a can of Tab (or whatever soda you can safely drink), so we can totally explore some fantastic...

The 1987 comedy "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is one of the late John Hughes' best movies. On the project, Hughes pulled a triple duty: he wrote, directed, and produced the film. That, however, wasn't suppose to be the case; Howard Deutch, who had just collaborated with Hughes on "Pretty in Pink," was originally set to direct the Thanksgiving classic, but once Steve Martin came into play, Hughes had a change of heart. "He loved Steve Martin," Deutch said in "John Hughes: A Life in Film," a 2015 biography written by Kirk Honeycutt.
In "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," Steve Martin plays Neal Page, an impatient and snobby ad executive who's in a rush to make it home to his wife and children for Thanksgiving. Page's assumingly straightforward trip from New York back home to Chicago becomes a convoluted -- and hilarious -- disaster after repeated unfortunate encounters with Del Griffith (John Candy), a slob,...

One of the more minor asterisks in writer/producer John Hughes' canon is the 1988 comedy "The Great Outdoors," which paired Dan Aykroyd and the late John Candy as mismatched brothers-in-law whose two families come together at a Wisconsin lake resort.
Slapstick hilarity ensued, including water skiing mishaps, a steak-eating contest and a giant bear attack. The movie, which was the third pairing of Hughes and director Howard Deutch after the teen pictures "Pretty in Pink" and "Some Kind of Wonderful," got lousy reviews and broke even at the box office.

Andrew McCarthy was barely mentioned in the original New York magazine article that coined the term “the Brat Pack.” But in the public consciousness, the star of “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Pretty in Pink” was still lumped in with the group of red-hot young actors that included Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe and Judd Nelson. After getting sober and realizing how conflicted he felt about Hollywood stardom, McCarthy went on to direct for TV and write for magazines. As audiences continue to be fascinated with the movies, music and fashions of the 1980s, McCarthy has finally embraced the snarky label with his new memoir “Brat: An ’80s Story” from Grand Central Publishing.
Why did you call your book “Brat” after fighting that description?

Howard Deutch isn’t a name that you might hear all the time but he’s done a few very well-respected movies over the course of his career. As a director, he’s someone that appears to have a pretty decent sense of humor but isn’t afraid to get a little gritty and a little silly at the same time. Some of his movies have been a little too nuts to really get into since the hokey feeling they give is a little uncomfortable for some folks, while it’s perfect for others. But one element that’s kind of seen in a lot of

Howard Deutch wasn’t sure he was the right man to oversee “Pretty in Pink.” The aspiring filmmaker had met producer and writer John Hughes while directing a music video for his previous examination of high school social castes, “Sixteen Candles.” However, he’d never overseen a feature film and the prospect terrified him.
“I was honest with John and told him I didn’t feel equipped,” Deutch remembers. “He said, ‘all you have to do is get those performances for me and you can do it.’ That always made me feel secure when I was feeling insecure about so many other things.”
Thirty five years later, “Pretty in Pink” is a certified classic and remains a cinematic touchpoint for generation after generation of teenagers who see their own heartaches, triumphs, and insecurities reflected in the lives of Andie, Duckie, and Blane. The film was recently re-released in theaters by...

It’s been 34 years since Molly Ringwald uttered the words, “I just wanna let them know that they didn’t break me.” This line has not only served as the defining message of Howard Deutch and John Hughes’ Pretty in Pink, but it also became a rallying cry for an entire generation of Andies and Duckies that were made to feel like outsiders. Naturally, the high school experiences of Andie (Ringwald) and Duckie (Jon Cryer) still resonate with today’s youth, and the same can be said about the majority of Hughes’ work since he strived to give ...

“Sydney Pollack said ‘everything’s a love story’, and it is. Everything is, if you think about it,” says Howard Deutch. He’s chatting to us ahead of the remastered Blu-ray release of Pretty In Pink which he directed from a script by John Hughes, first released some 34 years ago in 1986. It was Deutch’s feature directorial debut, one of several collaborations with Hughes and with his follow up Some Kind Of Wonderful (also written by Hughes) it arguably formed the apex of ‘80s teen romance as we know it.
Deutch is chatting to us via Zoom – the norm during lockdown – but for some reason we can’t get his camera to work. No wall of books to nose at, or Californian skies to envy, just a blank screen. But in a weird way perhaps it’s fitting – we’re flashing back to the ‘80s to recall the story of Pretty In Pink,...

The films of John Hughes and the resulting compendium of actors who starred in them, lovingly remembered as the Brat Pack, define a particular era of pop culture, inextricably linked with the fashions and customs of 1980s white America.
A common formula comprised of misfits and outsiders was the Hughes charm, perhaps embodied best by muse Molly Ringwald. After the success of 1984’s Sixteen Candles, Hughes wrote 1986’s Pretty in Pink on a whim of the performer’s reverence for the title track by the Psychedelic Furs.
Directing duties were handed off to Howard Deutch, here making his debut (but later directing the Hughes penned Some Kind of Wonderful shortly after in 1987).…...

Banana Split
Stars: Hannah Marks, Dylan Sprouse, Liana Liberato, Luke Spencer Roberts, Meagan Kimberly Smith, Haley Ramm, Jessica Hecht, Addison Reike, Jacob Batalon | Written by Hannah Marks, Joey Power | Directed by Benjamin Kasulke
April (Hannah Marks) has spent the last two years of high school in a relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse), from first frantic make-out session to final tear-stained breakup. In the aimless summer between graduation and college, the newly single April mends her heartbreak by striking up an unexpected friendship with an unlikely candidate: Nick’s new girlfriend, Clara (Liana Liberato).
With an oddball title like Banana Split I was expecting a quirky, just as oddball rom-com. However what you actually get is a touchy tale of two women who should be enemies, after all they’ve both dated and slept with the same guy, but instead find a common bond that leads to a sweet, tender platonic...

The celebrity-wannabe energy infusing contemporary culture’s understanding of tech executives, the most recent generational coat of paint applied to the corporate domination of everyday life, has found an unusual and ill-fitting home in “The Current War: Director’s Cut,” the latest film from director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”).
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2017, where it was received with a collective shrug, the film was then caught in limbo as its original distributor, The Weinstein Company, dissolved in the aftermath of sexual assault charges brought against company co-head Harvey Weinstein (whose producing credit here has been removed). While waiting for a proper theatrical release, Gomez-Rejon re-edited the film, hence its new colon-necessitating but not confusion-abating title.
Not that there’s anything confusing about this real-life 19th century drama. The story of Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon...

Get ready for Zoey 101. With a hit Netflix series, a new blockbuster sequel and some of the best red carpet outings recently, it's official: Zoey Deutch has become the coolest girl in Hollywood. And that title has been a long time coming for the 24-year-old, whose look-a-like mom is Back to the Future star Lea Thompson and acclaimed director Howard Deutch. After a few attempts at breaking out with roles in movie adaptations of major young adult novels (Before I Fall and Vampire Academy) earlier in her career that ultimately proved unable to ride the wave started by Twilight and The Hunger Games, Zoey finally broke out in a little movie no one saw coming: Set It Up, which quietly debuted on Netflix...

In the November cover interview for Cosmopolitan, the actress opened up about her lifelong mental health struggle. "I came into this world with anxiety," the 24-year-old told the outlet. "I used to hold my breath from anxiety when I was a baby and it would make me faint." Deutch, whose parents are Back To The Future actress Lea Thompson and Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch, shared that her anxiety can be painful and all-consuming, but it keeps her centered. "There are times when it's debilitating," she revealed. "And there are times when it...

Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) has signed on for a key role in HBO’s pilot about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers. Shannon will play Jerry Buss, majority owner of the Lakers during a period highlighted by the team’s Showtime era during the 1980s. The Untitled Showtime Lakers Project (fka Showtime) is set to start production next month.
Written by Max Borenstein (Godzilla), the project is based on Jeff Pearlman’s nonfiction book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. Executive producer Adam McKay is directing the pilot, which chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that won five NBA titles and defined its era, both on and off the court.

Editor’s Note: Koren is a millennial movie geek and while we were hanging out at Comic-Con this year, we started talking about classic movies and almost every movie we mentioned, she told us she hadn’t seen it! Over the course of Comic-Con our group would mention a movie, to see if she had seen it, and I started making a list of classic movies that she has never seen. There are hundreds of moves on this list that will continue to grow! I asked her if she would be willing to watch these movies and share her thoughts on these films that she is seeing for the first time. I thought this would be cool and interesting to get a millennial’s point of view of these classic films.

Meredith Stiehm, co-chair of the Writers Guild of America’s agent negotiating committee, has signed with Verve talent agency.
She’s the second high-profile WGA leader to sign with Verve in recent days. “Big Fish” screenwriter and WGA West board member John August announced on June 28 that he had signed with Verve, which had agreed to abide by the WGA’s new rules governing talent agents on May 16.
Stiehm is also one of eight named plaintiffs in the WGA’s April 17 suit against CAA, Wme, UTA and ICM Partners, alleging the agencies have been acting illegally in collecting packaging fees. The WGA directed its members five days earlier to fire their agents following the major agencies’ refusal to sign onto a new Code of Conduct, which bars the agencies from collecting packaging fees and from owning interests in production companies.

Verve Talent and Literary Agency is in preliminary talks with the Writers Guild of America to sign the guild’s code of conduct, sources tell Variety.
The guild is believed to have made some modifications to its initial code to make it more palatable to agencies like Verve.
If a deal is signed, it would mark a major breakthrough in the month-long standoff between Hollywood agents and writers. The nine-year-old agency would be by far the most prominent of the nearly 70 agencies that have agreed to the code.
The WGA and Verve had no comment about the negotiations.
Members of the WGA approved the code in March, with the requirement that agents cannot represent WGA members unless the agents agree to bans on collecting packaging fees on and owning stakes in production companies. The code also requires agents to provide the guild with a copy of the agreement or a...

Oscar nominated actor Michael Shannon is now on board the movie Swing that is described as a “romantic coming-of-age drama set in the world of elite varsity rowing.” The movie is being directed by Howard Deutch and written by Vojin Gjaja, “a former armor officer in the United States Army, the screenplay is based on his experiences as an oarsman at Columbia University.”
The story is said to be similar to Friday Night Lights and Dead Poets Society. “Set in 1999, it centers on a group of friends and crew teammates in their last year of college whose lives are changed forever when a Vietnam vet (Shannon) takes over as coach of their dysfunctional team.”
This sounds like Shannon will be playing sort of a heartwarming role. I think this will be a stretch, as he is generally super creepy. If he can pull it off, I’ll be impressed. I...
