Despite being injured while serving in the Navy during WWII after a shipboard explosion, he nevertheless learned how to do stunt and rodeo riding and training horses. He started his career as a stuntman on such shows as The Cisco Kid (1950) and in such films as The Conqueror (1956) and The Ten Commandments (1956).
