Louis Digiaimo, a veteran casting director whose credits include “The Godfather,” died Saturday after suffering a stroke earlier this year, according to media reports. He was 77. Digiaimo actually started his career with “The Godfather,” and while some would argue it could only go downhill from there, he went on to cast “The Exorcist,” “Rain Man,” “Gladiator” and “Donnie Brasco,” the latter of which he also produced. Digiaimo also served as the casting director on Ridley Scott‘s “Thelma & Louise,” meaning he gave a then-unknown actor named Brad Pitt his big break. Scott was clearly impressed by his work, as he.

Andrew Davis Returns To Stony Island
By Alex Simon
Director Andrew Davis made his name with hard-hitting action blockbusters like The Fugitive, Under Siege and The Guardian, but like most filmmakers, his first effort was a small film with a modest budget and a lot of heart. Davis’ directing debut Stony Island was shot in 1977, helmed by the then 30 year-old who had made a name for himself as a cinematographer, and conceived as a love letter to the South Chicago neighborhood where he grew up. Based loosely on the story of Davis’ younger brother Richie (starring as a fictionalized version of himself), who grew up as one of the few white kids in a largely African-American neighborhood, Stony Island follows a group of young musicians who try to form an R&B group in their racially-mixed neighborhood. Featuring the film debuts of now-notable names such as Dennis Franz, Susanna Hoffs,...

"Donnie Brasco" was like no mob movie that came before it. Based on a true story, that of FBI undercover agent Joseph D. Pistone, who spent years infiltrating New York's Bonnano crime family, its mobsters were decidedly unglamorous petty criminals, guys who had to resort to breaking into parking meters to make their monthly nut. It was directed by an Englishman best known for a Hugh Grant romantic comedy. Its hero, who never fires a gun except on the FBI firing range, was played by Johnny Depp (then best known for quirky, vulnerable man-child roles) and his mentor was played by Al Pacino (as a tired, rumpled mafioso, about a million miles from his Michael Corleone or Tony Montana). That it worked at all was miraculous, especially considering how different it might have been with its initial star and director. The result was a modern classic that made a grown-up...

New York -- First Line Entertainment and producer Edward Bass are partnering to launch three features, including the thriller "As Good as Dead," starring Andie MacDowell, Cary Elwes and Brian Cox.
The other projects are Nick Stagliano's modern-day Western "Good Day for It" and "The Shadow of the Shah," a biopic about the Shah of Iran's twin sister.
"Dead" stars Elwes as Ethan, a left-wing extremist who goes on the run after killing the reverend (Cox) behind a white supremacist group. MacDowell plays the widow who hunts him down with two redneck accomplices (Frank Whaley, Matt Dallas). Jess Wexler plays Ethan's estranged wife, and Laura Harring plays his neighbor.
Jonathan Mossek is directing the feature, which he wrote with Erez Mossek and Eve Pomerance. Hubert Gibbs and Bass are producing, and Jonathan Pillot and Heidi Jo Markel are exec producing. Principal photography is under way in New York.
