See a clip of the interview below.
“Think of the role of [Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks in the film] anchoring a whirling musical around Elvis,” he said, adding that Elvis star Austin Butler performed the Presley songs in total during filming, and a stage performer could do likewise. “We didn’t call cut,” he said. “On a musical stage version you could let it flow. Here's a taste of one of the musical numbers from Memphis performed at the Tony Awards: The story follows a white radio DJ named Huey Calhoun in the 1950s, who breaks convention by playing what...

Would there be Broadway musicals without the Gershwins? Probably, but happily, that's a rhetorical question.
In the 2012 season, it is striking how much George and Ira still get around, and as Matthew Broderick and Kelli O'Hara sing in "Nice Work If You Can Get It," -- " 'S Wonderful." They sing many familiar Gershwin songs in this new musical, set during Prohibition.
Director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall ("Anything Goes") makes great use of the talent. O'Hara, a gem, earned another Tony nomination for her work as Billie, a tough bootlegger. There's a sweetness to her voice and presence, and she moves well as Billie, a tough bootlegger.
Broderick ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off") plays Jimmy Winter, a feckless, thrice married rich guy with a weakness for chorines and hooch. As lovely as O'Hara is, and as rich as the supporting characters are, Broderick is pleasant and very likeable. His voice is fine,...

Joe Dipietro, Best Book of a Musical for Nice Work If You Can Get Iti gotta say, I'm a kid at heart with this stuff so hearing about my Tony nomination and 10 for the show just makes me feel about 12 years old again It was thrilling morning. This afternoon I have a work session with my writing partner David Bryan, so that to me is celebration - getting to work on the next on These nominations are a testament to Matthew Broderick and Kelli O'Hara and all of the hard work everyone has put into the show.

It’s a big day for the musical Once, but not for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, in the Tony Award nominations out this morning. Once — a romantic comedy involving a flower seller, a street musician, and a vacuum cleaner repairman — received 11 nominations including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, and Best Actress in a Musical. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess also fared well with 10 nominations, including Best Musical. But the troubled Spider-Man production is only a candidate for two awards, for scenic design and costume design. The awards will be broadcast June 10 on CBS. Here are the nominations: Best Play Clybourne Park (Author: Bruce Norris) ;Other Desert Cities (Author: Jon Robin Baitz); Peter and the Starcatcher (Author: Rick Elice); Venus in Fur (Author: David Ives) Best Musical Leap of Faith; Newsies; Nice Work If You Can Get It; Once Best Book Of A Musical Lysistrata Jones (Douglas Carter Beane...

There was a mad crush of premieres this week on Broadway — seven in all, vying to open just under the eligibility wire for this June’s Tony Awards. (Nominations will be announced Tuesday, May 1.) It’s been a surprisingly deep year in each of the four major categories (play, play revival, musical, musical revival).

The Broadway production of Nice Work If You Can Get It has opened on Broadway and the reviews are in. The show has received generally favorable, but not ecstatic, reviews. The show stars Kelli O’Hara and Matthew Broderick, has a Gershwin Brothers’ score, recycled from past shows, and a new book by Joe Dipietro. According to Variety magazine’s Steven Suskin, the show is about “a dissipated playboy (Broderick) who falls for a distaff bootlegger (O’Hara), who illicitly commandeers his Long Island mansion to store her illegal hooch. Comic misunderstandings ensue and eventually resolve into four or five sets of happy lovers, plus lots of dancing.”

How many Matthew Brodericks does it take to anchor a Gershwin revue-sical? Just one: He stands stock-still, and the whole show revolves around him. I don’t mean this as a criticism of Nice Work if You Can Get It, the perfectly lovely pan-Gershwin amalgamation of tunes and Prohibition-era tropes cleverly assembled by director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes) and book-writer Joe Dipietro (Memphis). On the contrary, I say it with admiration. Broderick, as he himself has noted on more than one occasion, is not a trained singer or dancer. His unique stage presence depends not on razzle-dazzle but on his ability to slip a dry jibe sideways to his conspirators in the audience: On some level, he’s still Ferris Bueller, and we still feel lucky to be his confidants. The leggy, lissome ensemble of Nice Work steers him from mark to mark, at one point actually rolling him on...
