Christmas comes early this year, as “Journey to Bethlehem” puts words (and music) in the mouths of all who bore witness to Jesus’ birth. Some of those tunes — like “Silent Night” and “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” — will sound familiar enough, though most of the songs — like most of the script — represents a fresh interpretation of believers’ original miracle, courtesy of Adam Anders, making a competent, if undistinguished directorial debut with the least edgy retelling of the nativity story around (which is essentially what the faith-based audience has been asking for).
One half of the duo behind the music for “Glee,” Swedish-born Anders comes to the project after more than two decades of penning and producing songs for boy bands and Disney Channel artists, including the Backstreet Boys (“More Than This”), Nick Lachey and the Jonas Brothers. He was instrumental in the soundtracks of big-screen musicals “Rock of Ages” and “The Prom,...

Early in writer-director Jim Strouse’s Love Again, music journalist Rob Burns (Sam Heughan) receives his latest assignment: a profile on Celine Dion as she embarks on a new tour. When Rob, a defiantly unsentimental Scottish bloke, scoffs at the gig, his editor (Steve Oram) fires back by declaring that Dion is in the midst of a “Celine-aissance.” The legitimacy of that statement is debatable, but Dion is at least experiencing something of a cinematic boomlet, between the gonzo fictionalized biopic Aline and references in films as diverse as Turning Red and Queens of the Qing Dynasty.
In any case, Dion is the selling point of Love Again, with the Canadian pop superstar executive producing, performing new songs for the soundtrack, and co-starring as herself. The central narrative of this syrupy-sweet romantic-comedy, however, follows the romantic entanglements of Rob and grieving children’s book illustrator Mira Ray (Priyanka Chopra Jonas). More than 100 key figures from the UK film and TV industry have signed a letter urging the UK government to take “immediate action” against Iranian authorities for “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights” in their response to the wave of public protests that erupted last year.
The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”

Lee Mack poked fun at Prince Edward during his opening monologue at the Royal Variety Performance.
The stand-up comic hosted the annual celebration at the Royal Albert Hall, which was broadcast on Tuesday (20 December) and attended by the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
In his opening speech, Mack welcomed the audience to the show, before addressing Edward, who is the youngest of Queen Elizabeth II’s children.
“I’ve got three kids,” he told the audience. “The youngest is the naughtiest. It’s always the youngest that’s the trickiest, isn’t it?
“No disrespect,” he added, while the camera cut to a laughing Edward and wife Sophie Windsor.
“There goes the knighthood,” Mack added. “Wouldn’t work for me, anyway. Sir Lee – just sounds like I’m in a bad mood.”

The BBC reports that Ghaziani and Riahi were detained when they appeared in the public without their headscarves on 20 November.
Before her arrest, Ghaziani wrote on social media that “whatever happens, know that as always I will stand with the people of Iran”.
She added: “This may be my last post.”
At least 410 protestors have been killed in the unending demonstrations in Iran as of 19 November in the Khamenei administration-led crackdown on protests, said Human Rights Activists News Agency (Hrana), a...

US talk show host John Oliver has criticised Elon Musk‘s management of Twitter in the weeks since the Tesla billionaire took over the social media platform.
In recent weeks, some of Musk’s most contentious moves have been the introduction of a system where users can pay for verified checkmarks, and the axing of the company’s staff from 7,500 to around 3,750.
On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight (20 November), Oliver said Twitter has been a “total mess” since Musk took the reins, arguing that “many of the worst people on Twitter” seem to think his takeover is a sign that they can unleash vitriol.
“One analysis [found] the use of a racial slur spiking nearly 500 percent in the 12 hours after his deal was finalised, which is pretty shocking,” the host said, “even for a website where a regular trending topic is sometimes just ‘The Jews’.

Comedian and actor Omid Djalili is campaigning for England’s football team to stand in solidarity with protestors against the Iranian regime, during their match against Iran in the World Cup today (21 November).
The star, who is of Iranian heritage, had posted a video on Twitter earlier this week urging players to make a hair-cutting gesture in support of the protests that have swept Iran since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, while in the custody of the country’s so-called morality police in September.
She was arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab in accordance with Iran’s strict religious laws, with part of her hair exposed. Many women and girls around the world have been cutting their hair in an act of protest, with Djalili now urging the England team to get involved.

Government advice is that cinemas can stay open during official mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II.
The majority of UK-Ireland cinemas will remain open this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, with distributors moving ahead with new releases.
Government ‘formal guidance’ for the period of mourning was sent by the UK Cinema Associationto its members yesterday shortly before the Queen’s death was confirmed. The guidance states there is “no expectation” for businesses – including cinemas – to close unless they wish to.
A government update received by the Ukca today and sent to members does not include any changes to this advice.

Actor Gerard Butler was among those paying respect to Pop Idol star Darius Danesh at his funeral in Glasgow today (25 August).
According to a report in The Scottish Sun, the service was attended by around 100 mourners. During the sombre procession, a lone piper played the song “Caledonia”.
The Ugly Truth and 300 star Butler, 51, recently said that he had been “devastated” by news of his friend’s death. Danesh rose to fame on UK talent shows Popstars and Pop Idol. He died at his home in the US aged 41 on 11 August.
Last week Butler paid tribute to his “brother in arms” by sharing a photo on Instagram of the pair smiling.
He wrote in the caption: “I am devastated by the sudden passing of my dear friend Darius, a true brother in arms. My thoughts and love go to his wonderful mum and dad Avril and Booth and his two brilliant brothers Aria and Cyrus.

God Save The Queen. And Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth I.
Queen Elizabeth II was amused today by yet another celebration of her 70th year on the throne. This time, it was a Windsor castle event called “A Gallop Through History,” which the horse-loving Queen delighted in watching.
The theatrical arena event included 1300 performers and 500 horses, and consisted of four acts, each overseen by a different event host, including Top Gun’s Tom Cruise, British actor Damian Lewis, Bridgeton’s Adjoa Andoh and veteran UK performer Alan Titchmarsh.
The event was designed to take viewers on a “gallop through history,” a reenactment dating from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I through the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Highlighting the show was a stage performance featuring Mirren as Elizabeth I whom she previously portrayed in the HBO miniseries Elizabeth I. The Oscar winner also has played Elizabeth II twice in the...

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2020 has, thanks to the generosity of ITV viewers, raised a record £11,552,577 – the most the match has ever raised in the history of the show, which was broadcast exclusively live on ITV and Stv.
For the first time in the match’s history, donations were matched by both the UK government and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, meaning every £1 donated becomes £3 – up to £3 million – until Tuesday 6th October 2020.
This year’s teams of celebrities and former professional footballers played for ‘Generation Covid’, and the money raised will help Unicef stop the spread of coronavirus and limit the impact on children’s lives around the world.
The match, which was played behind-closed-doors at Manchester United Fc’s Old Trafford, ended 1-1 and so went to penalties. The game marked a return to the North West following last year’s game at Chelsea Fc’s Stamford Bridge.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again doesn’t need any real insightful introduction as it is, of course, the decade long-awaited follow up to the 2008 box office smash hit Mamma Mia, advertently coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the former that somewhat evokes a strange similarity to Linklaters ‘Before Trilogy’ in a sort of majestic operatic version of life and trials and tribulations, albeit far more melodramatic and dazzling in its imperfections.
Interestingly Ol Parker’s sequel takes a structural decision in the same vein as Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather: Part II, which is a sentence I truly never thought would exist in this world. It orchestrates itself a sequel to events of its predecessor,...

Heads-up! The following contains spoilers for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, so get yourself to a theater before you read on.
Catchy musical numbers, incredible celebrity cameos, and a postcredits scene? Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is the gift that keeps on giving. While fans have come to expect end-of-movie additions from their favorite superhero franchises, they may not anticipate the short clip that plays after the credits roll in this one.
Once the movie's main plot has wrapped up, the audience is treated to a rendition of "Super Trouper" that's packed with stars - including Meryl Streep. But that's not the final scene to stick around for. The very last clip is actually of a reoccurring character from the film: a customs officer played by Omid Djalili. He tells Hugh Skinner's character, Harry Bright, if Donna rejects him, "have her give me a call." He then...

Like many a big-screen sequel, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” rewards fans willing to stick through the bitter, bitter end of the credits after the movie ends.
Yes, writer-director Ol Parker’s new movie musical — a sequel to 2008’s hit “Mamma Mia!” — has a post-credits scene.
And while the brief vignette doesn’t tease a third installment in the franchise, a mash-up of classic Abba songs with a convoluted soap operatic plot, it does provide a fun bonus scene that calls back to one of the new film’s biggest scene-stealers. (Spoiler alert: Stop reading now if you don’t want to know the contents of the bonus scene.)

If only Stan Lee’s Lucky Man would fully commit to its pulp silliness, it could be an invigorating, fun watch…

The moment a strip club owner (Omid Djalili, playing his character from Black Books) delivers the line “why don’t you put the cuffs on me and we can cha-cha?” is the moment a TV series loses any claim to credibility. Handily for Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, credibility is overrated. If only this show would realise that and fully commit to its pulp leanings.
It clearly wants to, but like a self-conscious toe-tapper on the edge of a dancefloor, it can’t quite bring itself to jump in with both feet and start having any real fun. Until it does, it’s doomed to remain in the uncomfortable no-man’s land between entertaining schlock and serious crime thriller,...

Though clever and cheeky like most Aardman Animations' productions, Shaun the Sheep Movie is a decidedly more slight, if ever quaint, effort for the company. A ruminant character spawned from the Wallace & Gromit short film A Close Shave and later the titular star of the television series "Shaun the Sheep," Mark Burton and Richard Starzak's big-screen debut for the wool-covered once-sidekick deliberately focuses as mightily as it can on keeping itself as snappy and pun-enthused as possible -- with barely a moment wasted with its comedy during the 85 minute running time. Every second crackles with energy and enthusiasm, keeping its playful spirits up high and bewitchingly captures the silly spunk the stop-motion purists provide best in gracious handfuls. But as passionate and loving as the production often becomes, the heart never quite pops out as vitally as it would so plentifully during Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit...

Caroline Quentin, Peter Firth and Pauline Collins have all been added to the cast of a new Charles Dickens drama.
The 20-episode series for BBC One has also cast BAFTA award winner Stephen Rea.
Dickensian brings together some of the writer's most iconic characters as their lives interweave in 19th Century London.
Characters from a range of classic tales will appear in the programme, including Scrooge, Fagin and Miss Havisham.
Rea, who plays Inspector Bucket from Bleak House, said: "Dickensian is the most beautiful re-working of the world of Dickens that you could ever imagine. The characters take on a fresh life, and any actor would be mad not to accept the challenge these great scripts offer."
Collins, who plays Martin Chuzzlewit's Mrs Gamp, added: "You don't need to know Dickens' novels to fall in love with the stories we're telling. It's going to be a real treat to watch.

Dylan Moran and Graham Linehan's Channel 4 sitcom Black Books, starring Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig, was comedy genius. Here's why...
Everyone loves second-hand bookshops, don’t they? The satisfaction of leafing through some dusty volume of antiquarian musings, the rich scent of aged leather bindings, redolent of the past… Add to all that the opportunity to indulge in some intellectual posing and impress the philosophy student lounging in the corner, and you’ve got yourself a full Saturday afternoon’s entertainment.
That is, of course, unless you happen to find yourself in one particular Bloomsbury establishment, presided over by a certain Bernard Black. Make no mistake: our Bernard (Dylan Moran) may have an aesthete’s tousled pallor, but there’s nothing remotely poetic about his attitude to running a shop. Only dimly familiar with the concept of customer service, he rules his domain with a rod of iron.
