To mark the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition – The Complete Adventure on 5th September, we’ve been given a copy to give away.
Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture became the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Music, Original Score. The film successfully launched the Star Trek franchise beyond the original television series, despite having been rushed to theaters with incomplete special effects and forced editing choices.
In 2001, director Robert Wise revisited the film to refine the edit and enhance the visual effects. His updated vision was released on DVD in standard definition and embraced by fans but has never been available in higher definition until now. Meticulously assembled and restored by producer David C. Fein with Post Production Supervisor, Mike Matessino, both of whom originally collaborated with Wise,...

Making good on their promise to deliver a singular virtual fan experience, the cloud graphics company Otoy has mounted its first project under a sweeping rights deal with “Star Trek” creator The Roddenberry Estate.
Variety reported last summer that Otoy would produce everything from holographic and digital renderings of the famous Starship Enterprise vessel to TV and movie sets. In its first staging, the company has reunited the living original cast and crew of the first-ever “Star Trek” pilot for a rendering of a founding set.
In an episode titled “The Cage,” director Robert Butler provided extensive behind-the-scenes materials to help in the recreation. Additional team returning included Sean Kenney, who played Captain Pike beginning in “Star Trek: The Menagerie,” and Chris Hunter, son of Jeffrey Hunter, who played Captain Pike in the pilot. The life work of Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek,” will be meticulously captured and catalogued in a new digital archive from leading tech company Otoy.
The multimedia Roddenberry Archive will produce everything from holographic and digital renderings of the famous Starship Enterprise vessel to TV and movie sets. The effort will be formally announced at the annual Star Trek convention Creation in Las Vegas this Friday, by the Roddenberry estate and artists Denise and Mike Okuda, Doug Drexler and Daren Dochterman.
The project will include key texts and documents from Roddenberry’s career, as well as images, blueprints and models. The archive will span the flagship “Star Trek” series, original films, and subsequent spinoffs. Often considered to be the best entry in the Star Trek movie series, 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan stands up to multiple viewings. From the stripped down plot, a departure from the more philosophy-heavy Star Trek: The Motion Picture, to excellent cast performances, Khan is always worth your time.
In fact, Paramount are celebrating the movie this month with a live virtual screening on April 25th, which is being hosted by Mark A. Altman and Daren Dochterman of the Inglorious Treksperts‘ podcast. With more demand for virtual screenings and fan events due to coronavirus, the studio are running these events to showcase its back-catalogue of titles, with content available through Cya.Live.

In my mind, I have always found Exorcist III not only scarier than the original film. Ever since I saw the film on home video in the 90’s, I think the film becomes even more haunting as I get older. Later, I heard that Blatty, the author of The Exorcist and the writer/director of Exorcist III, had to re-shoot an ending that included an exorcism which was mandated by the studio. For years, a “director’s cut” has been on the whispers of genre fans worldwide. Late last year, I found a tasty morsel of information that this rumored “director’s cut” was happening. Bigger genre sites picked it up immediately after our little site was the first to dig up the info from the source, TheNinthConfiguration.com, some credited us to finding the info and bringing it to the attention of many, most of the sites didn’t attribute us.

I wasn’t a big fan of the creature design that was used to bring Doomsday to life in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. All I saw was one of the giant trolls from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. The alien monster could have looked a lot different, though. Some concept art has surfaced that was created by Vance Kovacs (Thor, Men in Black 3) and shows a very different creature design that is a bit more terrifying than what we saw in the movie. There is also concept art features some action fight scenes between the film's heroes and the destructive monster.
I also included some cool concept art by prop illustrator Daren R. Dochterman that features some of Batman’s weapons and gadgets that he used in the film. The set of wonderful toys includes Kryptonite-laced grenades, batarang with multiple cutting edges,...

Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!

Thanks to our friends at AICN we have some HD TV spots for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. They were created by Daren R. Dochterman, who is a VFX artist, production illustrator, concept artist, and storyboard artist. He has worked on such films as The Chronicles of Riddick, Tron: Legacy, Se7en, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and Iron Man 2.
Dochterman worked on the Director's Edition release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. As a superfan of the material and a true geek, he used his skills to take the Blu-ray footage and re-assemble it using the disc's HD source material. These never-before-seen TV spots look beautiful. Here is some background on Dochterman's involvement with Star Trek: The Motion Picture: In what is perhaps his crowning achievement to date (in the VFX field), Dochterman served as Visual Effects Supervisor for 2001's amazing "Director's Edition" of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

We Are Movie Geeks were on hand last night as American Cinematheque kicked of their Star Trek.To Boldly Go film series at the historic Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. The evening began with my favorite of all the Trek films, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Seeing it on the big screen after 32 years was definitely a treat and most of the people in attendance agreed. It was not only fun and sentimental, but really paid homage to all the work that went into a production of that scale in a time before CGI and digital effects.
Surprisingly, the film held up very well for its 1979 release date. The music by Jerry Goldsmith was moving and evoked more than one round of applause during the opening and closing credits from the sentimental audience, who also applauded when names such as Roddenberry, Shatner, Nimoy and Doohan came up.

To celebrate the Star Trek film series, American Cinematheque has chosen six of the eight films in the franchise, plumbing deep for gems in the Trek universe that haven’t necessarily received the tribute they deserve. From series creator Gene Roddenberry, all of these films embody the ideals of sci-fi’s first franchise that have endured for more than 40 years. May they continue to live long and prosper for many more. The series will run Thursday, March 24 – Sunday, March 27. Thursday evening begins with my favorite of all the Trek films, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Who isn’t sobbing when Scotty and Kirk take the shuttle out to see the Enterprise for the first time?
The Star Trek tribute at the Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028), will include 35mm screenings of The Wrath Of Khan and The Search For Spock, plus The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country in 70mm.

The Art Directors Guild Film Society and American Cinematheque will honor four of the designers who worked on "Star Trek" -- John Jefferies, Joseph R. Jennings, Herman Zimmerman and Scott Chambliss -- at "Star Trek: 45 Years of Designing the Future," on Sept. 27 at the Egyptian Theatre.
All four will participate in a panel discussion to be moderated by production illustrator Daren R. Dochterman. The evening will also feature video clips from their work on "Star Trek," as well as a screening of the Director's Edition of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."
Documentary video clips of the late Harold Michelson, production designer of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," will also be shown.

Yesterday we told you that the first season of the classic “Trek” has arrived on Blu-ray, and now we’re back to report that all six of the “first generation” films have also made their way to HD. Remastered in high-def and sporting new audio tracks, the collection presents the “Star Trek” films as they have never been seen before.
Two different packages have been assembled, one collecting all six films and another collecting the first three. Each of the films carries over the special features from previous releases, but more importantly delivers nearly three hours of brand new bonus content specially recorded in high-def (and 14 hours total including the standard-def extra).
Check out the full specs after the jump.

Anyone that has read this site for a long time knows I am a pretty big fan of the original "Star Trek" universe. I'm talking Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the gang. I have reviewed all six of the last Original Series DVD releases as well as the DVD releases of Star Trek: First Contact, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis and all four seasons of "Enterprise". Strangely enough I don't consider myself a Trekkie since I love the show, but don't have a very deep knowledge of the universe, and that's an understatement. My favorite movies from the franchise are Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home and I have no idea when was the last time I saw the original Motion Picture, Search for Spock, The Final Frontier or The Undiscovered Country. However, that will all change come May 12 as Paramount will release all six of the original Star Trek films...
