Sherlock Holmes is everywhere these days -- on the hit BBC series, in huge Hollywood blockbuster films and, as "Elementary" executive producer Robert Doherty pointed out, an inspiration all over TV: "I see his fingerprints on so many shows." But CBS' new version isn't like any Sherlock we've ever seen.
Set in modern-day New York City, "Elementary's" Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) is a tatted-up recovering alcoholic ("Some of my choices in the '90s have made for some time-consuming make-up calls," Miller said of his tattoos. "But not here."); Holmes, fresh out of rehab, is saddled with a sober partner named Watson, who just so happens to be a woman (hi, Lucy Liu!).
At Sunday's CBS Television Critics Association panel, Miller and Liu were joined by executive producers Doherty, Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman to tell us more about the new dynamic they're exploring here, and how they'll incorporate...

CBS' "Elementary" will provide another new take on the classic characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson this fall, and Executive Producer Robert Doherty confirmed on Sunday the cast is growing to include the detective's main nemesis - Moriarty.
"I feel it's important, at the end of the day, to be true to the spirit of the character," the Ep said on Sunday at CBS' portion of the Television Critics summer tour in Beverly Hills, referring to the development of the new James Moriarty.

Although Sherlock fans are known to love a good mystery, they aren’t so great with patience. Thankfully, a recent Comic-Con panel has clued audiences in on exactly what the latest Holmes’ adaption will be about.
The panel featured producers Robert Doherty and Carl Beverly, as well as co-stars Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. CBS’ Elementary has been the subject of wild speculation, since it shares the Sherlock spotlight with BBC’s adaption and contains the genderbend of John Watson to Joan Watson.
Among the questions centering the original Sherlock mythos, star Jonny Lee Miller answered that he wasn’t stressed over becoming the great detective, and that “so many interpretations over the years actually takes the pressure off.” He added that he spoke with BBC’s critically acclaimed Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch, and that the actor was very supportive.

How many Sherlock Holmeses can peacefully coexist in pop culture?
That was the big question hanging over CBS’ Elementary panel at Comic-Con Thursday, with the show seeking to be the third major Holmes vehicle vying for audiences’ attention in recent years.
There is, of course, Robert Downey Jr.’s bombastic big-screen steam-punk version, in which Holmes is more keen on using his fists than his wits. And, more impressively, Benedict Cumberbatch’s marvelous take on the BBC’s Sherlock — a crime drama so brilliant it makes U.S. cop shows look like they’ve been asleep for the past decade.

Two and a half months before Elementary premieres on CBS, the pilot screened to a packed ballroom here at Comic-Con and it was all about the woman. Lucy Liu to be specific. The actress and her casting as Joan Watson in the Sherlock Holmes modernization attracted a lot of attention when it was announced in February. But to today’s applauding Comic-Con crowd Liu, who plays a sober companion to the recovering addict Holmes, seemed as natural to the Holmes iconography as the Facebook, cell phone records, drug addiction and New York Mets references in the pilot. It continued during the panel that followed. “We love you” cried out a fan at the back of the hall as Liu responded to an audience question concerning criticism about her casting. “I think the gender change creates a dynamic and chemistry that you don’t see in the films and the BBC series,...

Aidan Quinn is set to co-star opposite Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu in CBS’ drama pilot Elementary. The project, written by Robert Doherty, is set in present day and stars Miller as eccentric Brit Sherlock Holmes, a former consultant to Scotland Yard whose addiction problems led him to a rehab center in New York City. Just out of rehab, Holmes now lives in Brooklyn with “sober companion” Joan Watson (Liu) while consulting for the NYPD. Quinn will play NYPD Captain Gregson who worked with Sherlock at Scotland Yard after 9/11 and was so impressed with his work that he has invited him to work as a consultant to the police in New York City. Gregson grew accustomed to Sherlock’s “eccentricities” in the U.K., but knows they won’t necessarily fly in the Big Apple. Michael Cuesta is directing the pilot, produced by CBS TV Studios and Timberman/Beverly.

CBS' new series "Elementary" has found one way to get around comparisons to the BBC's "Sherlock" with its own new contemporary-set take on Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" books.
Former "Charlie's Angels" star Lucy Liu has been hired to play the secondary lead of "Dr. Joan Watson" in the New York City-set series which has already cast Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes reports TV Line. Sexual tension will no doubt be in the offering.
Robert Doherty penned this version in which Holmes, a former consultant to Scotland Yard with addiction problems. Now out of rehab, he lives in Brooklyn with Joan Watson, a disgraced former surgeon who now consults for the NYPD.

It seems like we’ve heard Lucy Liu more than we’ve seen her on screen recently, with a lot of voiceover work for films such as the two Kung Fu Panda adventures. But she’s also been finding more reliable work by returning to TV, on the likes of cop show Southland. And soon she’ll be putting that law-keeping experience to use, signing on to play Watson to Johnny Lee Miller’s Sherlock in CBS pilot Elementary. The concept finds the legendary ‘tec re-imagined, with Sherlock (fortunately still a Brit) having finished a round in rehab for addiction issues. He’s now living in Brooklyn with “sober companion” and former surgeon Joan Watson and getting back to his old gig – albeit for the NYPD instead of Scotland Yard. How are CBS planning on distinguishing their modern day re-imagining of the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle creation from the BBC's hit series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman? By making John Watson a woman of course! Deadline reports that Lucy Liu will play "Joan Watson" opposite Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock; a character described as a former Scotland Yard consultant who finds himself in a New York City rehab centre. The female Watson meanwhile lives in Brooklyn and is a former surgeon who lost her license after the death of a patient while consulting for the NYPD. Since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective Sherlock Holmes has broken free of its copyright laws, there have been many to snatch up the character in order to give it a make-over and present it to audiences as something shiny and new. Starting the Sherlock craze was Guy Ritchie, who has taken the character to the big screen in not one, but two action packed movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. The two movies did very well overall at the box office which has lead to others jumping on the Sherlock bandwagon, including the prominent BBC network and now the Us CBS network.

CBS is working on a new "Sherlock Holmes" TV series and has now hired Jonny Lee Miller (Hackers, Trainspotting, "Eli Stone," "Dexter") to play the title character. Robert Doherty ("NYPD Blue") wrote the script and is executive producing. Michael Cuesta ("Homeland," "Dexter," Twelve and Holding) will direct. The new show will be a modern take on the cases of Sherlock Holmes, who will now live in New York City. It's still unclear who will play Holmes, but many are assuming that CBS will make the famous sidekick a woman. Miller most recently starred in Danny Boyle's "Frankenstein" play in London, a role that earning him an Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor. He shared it with his co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, who coincidentally plays Holmes on BBC's "Sherlock" series.

Well, if they were going to remake such an iconic British character, mind as well do it with a British actor in the part, right? That may or may not be the reasoning behind CBS’ official casting of Jonny Lee Miller in their new Sherlock Holmes TV show, “Elementary”, but we’re going to go with it cause it sounds better, and lends to the notion that CBS knows what it’s doing with this endeavor. We’re hoping, anyway. Miller, who was once famously married to Angelina Jolie, is no stranger to American TV. He’s done stints on “Dexter” and more recently fronted his own TV show, “Eli Stone”. In “Elementary”, Miller will play Sherlock Holmes, who has since relocated to New York City to deal with, one presumes, a whole new set of dangerous criminal vermin.
