One of the best international thrillers ever has almost become an obscurity, for reasons unknown – this Blu-ray comes from Australia. Edward Fox’s wily assassin for hire goes up against the combined police and security establishments of three nations as he sets up the killing of a head of state – France’s president Charles de Gaulle. The terrific cast features Michel Lonsdale, Delphine Seyrig and Cyril Cusack; director Fred Zinnemann’s excellent direction reaches a high pitch of tension – even though the outcome is known from the start.

Some so-called sophisticated ‘sixties romantic dramas have dated pretty badly, as it’s not easy to create a movie acceptable to a fickle audience, that doesn’t end up with attitudes, politics or even costumes that don’t look ‘wrong’ just a few years later. I’ve found that enjoying Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s takes a conscious act of selective blindness. The music, the style, the images were swooningly vital to an audience perhaps ten years older than this reviewer. Hepburn’s ravishing Holly Golightly misses...

"The Furniture" our weekly series on Production Design. Here's Daniel Walber
This week marks 50 years since the release of Is Paris Burning? (not to be confused with documentary classic Paris is Burning) an epic that hasn’t quite stood the test of time. In the tradition of The Longest Day, it harnesses a cast of thousands to tell the story of a single, crucial moment of World War Two: The liberation of Paris. French stars like Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon take roles in the Resistance, while the likes of Kirk Douglas and Glenn Ford play American generals. There are cameos from Simone Signoret, George Chakiris and Anthony Perkins, to name only a few.
Directed by René Clément with a script by Gore Vidal and Francis Ford Coppola, you’d think it would be more popular. Still, it’s worth revisiting, and not only for its two Oscar nominations (art...

Remember the last time you got really sick? That time that you could do nothing but throw up and curl into a fetal position on your bathroom floor? It was awful, right? Now imagine having the same thing happen when you're out in the wilderness. Naked. With lions hunting you. That's what happened to Ryan Holt, a participant on this season's Naked and Afraid Xl. Stuck in the African Badlands, the 31-year-old from Roxbury, Maine, fell ill while out on the 40-day challenge. It's unclear whether Holt ate something bad, drank some tainted water, or simply had his body give out.

Hey it’s almost time for the final season of Californication so let’s talk about what it’s going to be like to be for someone brand new to the series and what it means for her future career. While this is still ultimately about the life of Hank (David Duchovny), I can’t deny that there will be at least one person piggy backing on the success of the series and the increased viewership it will likely have from the big push that this is Californication’s last season on Showtime. For Tara Holt, her career will get a boost, or at least that’s what she’s no doubt hoping and what I honestly want for her.
When you’re just starting out as an actor, your choice of role is pretty limited. For Holt, she’s mostly been taking on small parts like Bar Girl, College Girl,...

Crime stories are usually difficult to turn into a comedy, but the challenging duty is accomplished in the pilot of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. From the creators of Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine chronicles the 99th Precinct, a police force with a new captain determined to whip his team into shape.
The series stars Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta, an officer who has it pretty easy when it comes to his profession. Since Jake’s record of arrests is solid, he handles his day-to-day in a joking manner.

Patty Andrews Returns: Bette Midler revives the ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B’ [See previous post: "Patty Andrews: The Andrews Sisters' Last Surviving Member Has Died."] In 1974, a year after Bette Midler repopularized "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B," Maxene and Patty Andrews reunited for the World War II Broadway musical Over Here. (Laverne Andrews had died in 1967.) With a score by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, and book by Will Holt, Over Here, a mix of rose-colored nostalgia and social criticism, ran for a year. (Photo: The older Patty Andrews.) Three years earlier, Patty Andrews had starred off-Broadway in the Sherman brothers’ Victory Canteen, a sort of prequel to Over Here. The show, also featuring Sherry Alberoni, Lorene Yarnell, and Anson Williams, ran for seven months. Rift between Maxene and Patty Andrews Following that last major hit, the two surviving Andrews sisters, both San Fernando Valley residents, went their own way. According to reports, in the two decades...
