Scarlett Johansson is one of the few MCU actors who have managed to maintain a splendid career after being part of such a highly beloved franchise. One would think that after her successful run in the comic book universe, the actress would want to avoid joining any more franchises and instead focus on showcasing her talents in independent features.
Yet, this assumption is far from the truth. As the dust settles on her MCU departure, the actress has taken a bold move that could prove to be a misstep in her otherwise successful career.
Scarlett Johansson in and as Black Widow | Marvel Studios
Defying fan expectations, Johansson is helming not one, but two acclaimed franchises, i.e. Transformers and Jurassic World. What could possibly be a huge gamble for her career, the actress is one of the leads in the upcoming Jurassic World reboot, apart from having a voiceover role in the Transformers franchise.

After the release of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ the superhero media landscape was rocked by allegations against Jonathan Majors, who portrayed Victor Timely in ‘Loki’ Season 1 and Kang the Conqueror in ‘Quantumania,’ set to be a pivotal villain in the Multiversal Saga.
Jonathan Majors’ career took a downturn following his arrest in March 2023 on charges of assaulting a woman rumored to be his girlfriend. Subsequently, he faced layoffs from multiple projects, departure of his manager and PR team, and the withdrawal of several commercials featuring the actor.
Then, nine months after the incident, a guilty verdict was reached, and Majors received a probation sentence. Shortly after, Disney terminated Majors from his role as Kang, the character he portrayed in both seasons of ‘Loki’ and the ‘Ant-Man’ movie.
Subsequent to his termination, ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ underwent an internal re-titling to ‘Avengers 5.’ Rumors began circulating that the studio was...

Jonathan Majors’ career has been in somewhat of a freefall ever since he was arrested in March 2023 after an alleged assault of a woman he knew and was rumored to be his girlfriend. Then, last year 9 months after the incident occurred, the guilty verdict came and Majors was sentenced to probation. Almost immediately Kang was fired from Disney and fans got the confirmation that he won’t be proceeding as Kang, the role he played in both seasons of ‘Loki’ and ‘Ant-Man’ movie.

The inaugural San Quentin Film Festival — the first film festival to be held inside a prison — will take place Oct. 10, 2024 at the maximum security correctional facility located near San Francisco.
The one-day event, designed to spark collaboration between incarcerated people and the entertainment industry, will include a screening of A24’s Sing Sing, which stars Colman Domingo and a cast of formerly incarcerated actors. The festival will include both new feature films that depict the prison experience and short films made by incarcerated filmmakers.

Move over, Chris Pratt. The Lincoln Lawyer actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is a new leading man for Universal and Amblin’s latest Jurassic World movie. Dinosaurs will rule the world again on July 2, 2025, when the film stomps into cinemas.
Edwards’s Jurassic World movie is a fresh start for the beloved franchise, with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return. The next installment also leaves the original trilogy’s stars, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, in the rearview. David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, is penning the screenplay. It’s hardly unusual for TV journalists to spend time at the movies, but never has a weekend of festival programming seemed so tailor-made for us. The Chicago Critics Film Festival kicked off its 11th edition with a lineup that was fairly bursting with small-screen talent and resonance.
Opening night on May 3 saw the Chicago premiere of Sing Sing, which stars Colman Domingo, who had already reinvigorated The Walking Dead franchise before winning an Emmy for his role in Euphoria. Elsewhere, his co-star Hunter Schafer, one of Euphoria’s many breakouts, gave a gorgeously wounded performance in Cuckoo, a new horror-thriller from Tilman Singer.

Did Anna Wintour add more tables to this year’s Met Gala? Because the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art felt especially crowded on Monday evening, May 6, teeming with Hollywood A-listers wearing a plethora of artful looks. And while not everyone leaned into the evening’s theme, “The Garden of Time,” for the most part the stars acquitted themselves well in looks that ranged from quiet elegance to over the top and outrageous.
Even with the nature-centric theme, the night surprisingly was highlighted by some stars in neutrals. Nicole Kidman offered a great backstory for her black and white Balenciaga gown, while Cardi B served up the night’s best drama in a Windowsen black gown that almost spanned the width of the museum steps. Flesh-toned gowns likewise were abundant, including Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta and Lizzo in a custom floral-inspired corset gown by Paris-based designer Victor Weinsanto.

Colman Domingo opened up about the inspiration behind his 2024 Met Gala look, which he says was a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman and André Leon Talley.
Domingo was among many celebrities who walked up the steps of The Met to celebrate the new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” This year’s gala theme was “The Garden of Time,” and Domingo wore a cape that extended from his jacket and paired it with wide-legged pants.
“They both wore capes when they were at the Met,” Colman told E! at the event. “Everything I do, I feel like it’s gotta be for the culture. It’s gotta be more than just for me.”
He continued, “I wanted to honor these brothers who were here before me as well.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will now take the helm of Universal Pictures' latest Jurassic World movie, but David Leitch was briefly attached to direct before deciding to part ways with the project.
At the time, we were told that Leitch stepped away after coming to the realization that his "creative input would be minimal due to the project’s fast-tracked status," and the filmmaker has now elaborated on his reasons for bailing on the film.

Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), William H. Macy and Clifton Collins Jr. have joined director Clint Bentley’s “Train Dreams,” Variety has learned.
Production on the film, from Black Bear and also starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, began earlier this month in Spokane, Wash.
“Train Dreams” is the sweeping and poignant tale of Robert Grainier (Edgerton), a day laborer employed as a logger helping to expand the railways across America. Forced to spend prolonged periods of time away from his wife, Gladys (Jones), and their young daughter, Grainier struggles to make sense of his place in a rapidly changing world. As his story unfolds, he experiences great love, unspeakable loss, and unique bonds on a journey that is both distinct and universal. The picture features a script by Bentley and Greg Kwedar (“Sing Sing”), which is adapted from Denis Johnson’s iconic, Pulitzer Prize-nominated novella of the same name.

Acclaimed writer John Logan will adapt Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” novel into a feature film for director John Hillcoat.
Hillcoat is also producing along with Keith Redmon for New Regency. Cormac McCarthy’s son, John Francis McCarthy, will serve as executive producer, while Cormac, who died in June 2023, will receive a posthumous executive producer credit.
“It’s incredibly exciting to have John Logan on board,” John Francis said. “Very reassuring in the seemingly long list of good news concerning what was originally such an intimidating undertaking.”
The project was originally set up with director James Franco and star Russell Crowe in 2016, but fell apart over rights to the book.
Based on historical conflicts along the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, “Blood Meridian” follows the journey of the Kid, a fourteen-year-old from Tennessee, as he navigates the brutal and harrowing landscape of this new era.

The synopsis for the Western, known for its descriptive violence, reads: “Based on historical conflicts along the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, the story follows the journey of the Kid, a 14-year-old from Tennessee, as he navigates the brutal and harrowing landscape of this new era.”

Said Morgan, “Blood Meridian has been one of my favorite novels since first reading it in 1985. It’s a majestic, beautiful and uncompromising book and I’m thrilled to be able to help bring Cormac McCarthy’s dark masterpiece to the screen.

Three time Oscar-nominated scribe John Logan is adapting National Book Award-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West for the big screen for New Regency.
John Hillcoat, who previously adapted McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road, will direct and produce along with Keith Redmon for New Regency.
The sprawling novel is widely considered one of the greatest works of American literature. Published in 1985, Blood Meridian or The Evening Redness in the West is an epic tale of the violence and depravity that attended America’s westward expansion which brilliantly subverts the conventions of the Western novel and the mythology of the Wild West. Based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, it traces the fortunes of a 14-year-old Tennesseean who stumbles into a nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered and the market for their scalps is thriving.

Life is finding a way to fill the cast of the new Jurassic World sequel from the original Jurassic Park co-writer David Koepp. The new film has been courting actors like Scarlett Johansson, and recently, it is being rumored that Dev Patel and Colman Domingo are being sought out for roles. It’s a new era for dinosaurs. Jurassic World: Dominion concluded the sequel trilogy and in their alternate universe, humans and Earth’s prehistoric creatures are now living side-by-side in the modern world. Following reports suggesting Dev Patel might be joining Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic City, more names are now in the casting mix.

First David Leitch was directing, then he was out due to ‘creative differences’. Then, Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker behind Rogue One and The Creator was in, working on a script by original Jurassic Park writer, David Koepp.
Since then, Scarlett Johansson and Dev Patel are both rumoured to have signed up for the project which, unbelievably, is set to arrive in cinemas next summer.
While huge productions like this one aren’t well known for coming together quickly and then going on to be brilliant, we’re heartened by the stories that originally circulated suggesting that Universal was looking to fast track this production...

There’s no information on who Dev Patel might play in the Jurassic World movie, but Richtman added that Colman Domingo is being eyed to play the villain. Take all this with a grain of salt for now, but Patel and Domingo would make for excellent additions to the cast.

This is a stacked weekend for movies that could get awards attention but probably won’t, both in theaters and on digital platforms. First up is a lively ode to one of cinema’s musical masters.
The contender to watch this week: “Ennio”
Giuseppe Tornatore‘s documentary about influential composer Ennio Morricone has been a long time coming, and not only because Morricone’s career dates back to 1946. “Ennio” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2021 and was released in Italy in 2022. But don’t take its delayed domestic debut as a bad omen: The movie is a spellbinding tribute to the two-time Oscar winner, who wrote the scores for “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Days of Heaven,” “The Untouchables,” “The Hateful Eight,” and Tornatore’s own “Cinema Paradiso.” The talking heads include Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Quincy Jones, and Bruce Springsteen. Following a theatrical run in February,...

Nia DaCosta is headed to the 28 Years Later franchise.
The filmmaker, who helmed last year’s The Marvels, is in talks to direct the second film in Sony’s upcoming horror trilogy, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Danny Boyle, the director behind the 2002 original movie 28 Days Later, is returning to helm the first sequel film from writer Alex Garland, who penned the first feature.
THR previously reported exclusively that the long-gestating feature follow-up, in addition to a second film, had landed at Sony Pictures, with Garland penning both scripts. At the time, THR reported that Cillian Murphy, who starred in 28 Days Later and won the Oscar earlier this year for his titular role in Oppenheimer, is set to serve as executive producer for the new project and could potentially appear in it.

Las Vegas – First, for those who care, CinemaCon has witnessed the first sneak of Antoine Fuqua‘s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” and if you’re a hardcore fan, you will be quite happy with the results so far. Jaafar Jackson is at his best on stage playing his uncle and, truth be told, his dance moves are uncanny. Nia Long has a moment as Michael’s mother Katherine Jackson and there is a brief glimpse of Colman Domingo as the notorious family patriarch Joe Jackson.

Hollywood has been obsessed with biopics for what seems like forever, but it's hard not to admit that our current film landscape is reaching critical mass with movies about famous people. I guess when they've run out of recognizable IP, they've gotta center stories about recognizable faces instead. Last year alone we saw "Maestro," "The Iron Claw," "Napoleon," "Ferrari," "Nyad," "Priscilla," and "Big George Forman," not to mention brand movies like "Blackberry," "Tetris," "Air," and "Barbie." And then, of course, there's "Oppenheimer," which not only took home seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, but also became the highest-grossing biopic of all time. No shade to our boy Oppy, but it seems like a new film from Antoine Fuqua is coming for that title and the fact it's a movie about the most famous musical performer to ever live certainly gives the project a leg up on the father of the atomic bomb.

Not everyone is thrilled that there’s a biopic being made about pop sensation Michael Jackson. The director of “Leaving Neverland,” the HBO documentary that delves into accusations of Jackson’s alleged child abuse, last month accused director Antoine Fuqua’s film of being “a complete whitewash” and that it aims to “completely rewrite the allegations and dismiss them out of hand.”
However at CinemaCon on Wednesday, “Michael” producer Graham King took the stage to say that the new biopic, currently in production, “will get into all of it.”
King promised “Michael” includes 30 songs and recreations of Jackson’s performances throughout his career but also depictions of “his life outside the public eye, things many people have never seen before.”
“Everyone has an opinion on him,” King said about Mj, acknowledging the blinding accusations that surrounded his career, saying that ultimately the film is a portrait of a “complex” man,...

Warner Bros. Lands ‘Black Samurai’ Movie From ‘The Color Purple’ Director Blitz Bazawule (Exclusive)
In a competitive situation, Warner Bros. has landed “The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule’s next project, which takes on the legendary Yasuke, an African warrior who became the first Black samurai.
Sources tell Variety that Warner Bros. beat out three other studios and streamers’ bids on the script, tentatively titled “Black Samurai,” which Bazawule wrote on spec and will direct and produce under his Inward Gaze banner.
After impressing the industry with his 2018 debut “The Burial of Kojo,” helming episodes of Ava DuVernay’s “Cherish the Day” and working with Beyoncé on her feature-length visual album “Black Is King,” Bazawule made his major studio debut with 2023’s “The Color Purple.”
