Today marks the 75th anniversary of Wabe, Atlanta’s choice for PBS and NPR and local news and stories. From the creation of Wabe Studios and the expanded slate of original video and audio offerings to its continued investment in award-winning local journalism, the 90% community-funded public media creator highlighted the power of its portfolio at the Wabe Preview ‘24 presentation held today at the Carter Center.
“The media landscape has changed drastically in the past 75 years, and as we look toward Wabe’s next 75 years, we’ll be adding more original, Atlanta-focused content than ever before,” says Wabe President and CEO Jennifer Dorian. “By investing in original programming and local award-winning journalism, we are well-positioned to continue to evolve with new capabilities, going from only a “station” to a streamer and studio. Our work is rooted locally, but its value and authenticity resonate throughout our region and nation.”

When you think of Turner Classic Movies, the cinephile haven, you probably wouldn’t imagine that Rob Reiner’s delightful 1989 comedy, When Harry Met Sally… would be the opening night attraction and key art representative for the 10th Annual TCM Classic Film Festival, now taking place through Sunday night at the Tcl Grauman’s Chinese and Egyptian theatres. But indeed the times they are a-changin’ and 30 years after its release (which I was around to cover) Reiner’s film with its Oscar-nominated screenplay by the late great Nora Ephron is furthering TCM’s definition of a “Classic.”
When I recently spoke to Festival Director Genevieve McGillicuddy she acknowledged it is a more contemporary choice than the previous openers for the TCM fest, but thinks it is entirely appropriate. “Really, you know that film even when it came out in 1989 was certainly clearly a nod to romantic comedies of the past.

Turner Classic Movies, the last cable channel launched by Ted Turner as an independent media mogul, is hitting its silver on-air anniversary this month. But the TCM brand is well positioned to enter a golden age as the tide turns in the marketplace for cable TV channels.
TCM has spent 25 years building up a community of film fanatics who love the channel itself, not just the movies it screens. The Turner Classic Movies seal of approval draws thousands of attendees annually to the TCM Classic Film Festival, which kicks off its 10th edition in Los Angeles this week, and to TCM-branded screenings in theaters around the country.
Since 2011, TCM has offered film-focused cruises in partnership with Disney and other luxury ship operators. Three years ago, it launched an official fan club — the Backlot — that now has 34 chapters, creating a grassroots network for local promotions such as the “TCM in Your Hometown” contest events.

The TCM Classic Film Festival will pay tribute to Turner Classic Movies founder Ted Turner during a special presentation on April 11, the opening night of the four-day festival now in its 10th year in Los Angeles.
Turner was an architect of the modern media landscape with his pioneering efforts as a cable TV programmer with CNN, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and the 1994 launch of TCM. In the mid-1980s he made a huge bet on the value of timeless content with his acquisition of the pre-1948 MGM movie library, among other vaults. Turner sold Turner Broadcasting System to Time Warner for $7.5 billion in 1996.
“Turner Classic Movies was a passion project of mine, born of my love for classic films,” Turner. “I’m very proud to have played a role in honoring these great works through the years, and hope they continue to provide just as much joy and entertainment to...

It’s been about half-a-year since we learned The Criterion Collection would be departing Hulu soon and bringing its entire streaming library to the new service FilmStruck, alongside films from Turner Classic Movies, Janus Films, Flicker Alley, Icarus, Kino, Milestone, Zeitgeist, Warners Bros. and more. Basically, it’s cinephile heaven, but on everyone’s mind is how much would this service-of-our-dreams cost?
Ahead of a launch on October 19, Turner has now revealed the subscription pricing plans, and thankfully it’s quite reasonable. The subscriptions are broken down into three options. First, for $6.99 a month, you get “a constantly refreshed library of hard to find & critically acclaimed films,” which we imagine will be the Mubi-style of a curated, more limited line-up featuring hand-picked selections from their entire library.
Then, for $10.99 a month, you get access to the entire The Criterion Channel, as well as exclusive bonus content, and “exclusive contemporary and previously unavailable films.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) today announced Trailblazing Women, a multi-year initiative created to raise awareness about the historical contributions of women working behind the camera. The programming event, hosted by actress, producer and director Illeana Douglas, premieres October 1 and airs every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the entire month, and will shine a spotlight on cinema’s greatest female filmmakers and women who challenged gender stereotypes while carving out successful careers in an industry where men hold the bulk of the power.

Jennifer Dorian has been upped to chief strategy officer for Turner Entertainment Networks, which means she’s in charge of strategy development for TBS, TNT, truTV and Turner Classic Movies. She’ll report to Turner Entertainment networks president Steve Koonin. Dorian, who had been Svp network strategy and brand development for the Turner Entertainment Nets, cut her teeth as VP of branding for TNT where, in 2001, she led that network’s charge with its “TNT: We Know Drama” campaign. In Monday’s announcement, Turner noted that branding campaign was a big success for TNT. She followed that up with the “TBS Very Funny” brand launch in ’04 and the rebranding of Court TV as truTV. And the company credits her with the exploration of brand extension into new arenas – such as TCM’s Classic Film Festival.
