In an unsurprising move, a sequel to 2012.s Project X has been ordered because of the fact that the original made a ton of money off a nothing budget. But rather than breaking the mold with the title for the follow-up, those involved simply decided to name it Project Xx. Which, while pretty obvious, suggests that the raunchy comedy will pick-up right where the original left off. The Wrap were the first to report that the Todd Phillips-produced sequel is currently in pre-production. At the moment though we.re still not sure if either the film.s trifecta of stars (Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, and Jonathan Daniel Brown), its director Nima Nourizadeh, or its writing team of Matt Drake and Michael Bacall will return. However, the last details we had on the sequel suggested that Bacall had been asked to write a draft of the script. Project Xx has...

Three days later, I’m still not quite sure what to make of Charlie Countryman. A messy, compelling fever dream of a film, it cleverly blends magical realism and the quest archetype with a Shakespearean love story and pulse-pounding action sequences, but it’s also by no means a home run. Trying to assign the film to a genre proved fruitless, and drawing its plot and characters out on paper in attempt to discern some deeper meaning only left me confused. Clearly, director Fredrik Bond (known for his music videos) prioritized style over substance with his first feature film. And to Bond’s credit, it’s filled with some strikingly beautiful moments. Outside of those moments, however, it’s difficult to get on Charlie Countryman‘s side, given its utter lack of concern for coherent storytelling.

Charlie Countryman is a beautifully photographed, masterfully acted, and completely frustrating mess of a film.
After the death of his mother, Charlie (Shia LeBeouf), is told by the woman’s ghost that he should to go to Bucharest. The drug-addled, wayward youth jumps at the chance to follow his mother’s wishes and books a seat on a plane to a city he’s less than familiar with. Once on board, he befriends an elderly man who tells the story of his beautiful daughter awaiting his arrival. If you have seen the trailer, you know the man ends up dead midflight. On a mission from a deceased family member whilst sitting next to a corpse, one might think our hero would immediately abort mission. However, Charlie treks on, especially after one glimpse of the stunningly beautiful yet totally bereft daughter, Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood), in the flesh. The two exchange pleasantries,...

Country Bumpkin: Bond’s Debut a Grating Escapade of Disingenuous Cliché
Swedish born Fredrik Bond, who’d made a notable name for himself as a successful director of commercials, makes his feature film debut with Charlie Countryman, unfortunately a clipped version of its initial moniker, originally titled the The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman upon its premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. This indeed is a misfortune, because Bond’s catchy title was the only original aspect about the film, now with as denuded a calling card as its content is absent anything of consequence. Inane, banal, and thoroughly unrealistic, the film plays like the interrupted fantasy of some melancholic teenager who falls asleep listening to ultra-hip tracks on his iPod.
We meet Charlie (Shia Labeouf) in a hospital, dazed as he waits with his father (Vincent D’Onofrio) to say goodbye to their wife and mother (Melissa Leo) as...

Chicago – What happens when you give people two months in Romania to make a movie about a lost soul dealing with grief, love, drug use, and general excess? You get a spoiled, bizarre, annoying piece of work like “Charlie Countryman,” starring talented people given absolutely nothing to do that proves that talent. It’s a film more in love with slow-motion shots of its abrasive lead running to electronic dance music than anything approaching character or plot. It’s like watching the travel video of the most annoying guy you know.
Charlie Countryman (Shia Labeouf) can talk to dead people. He meets a man on a plane to Romania and has a brief conversation with him After he drops dead in the seat next to him. The afterlife-chat forces Charlie to seek out the man’s daughter, Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood), with whom he falls in love, of course.

Planning a trip abroad? Watch out for girls like Evan Rachel Wood’s Gabi in Charlie Countryman, otherwise, you’ll have quite the load of baggage to contend with.
While teaching in Romania, screenwriter Matt Drake indulged in a “mild flirtation” with a mother at school. Shortly after, that very school was temporarily shut down by the local police. Why? Because that very mother had an ex-husband who threatened to arm up and snatch their child out of the classroom. The incident left Drake wondering what if he started up a relationship with this woman, and then that question led to the story of Charlie Countryman.
In the film, Shia Labeouf stars as the titular Charlie. When his mother (Melissa Leo) passes away, he has a vision in which she insists that he take an impromptu trip to Bucharest. Charlie obliges, but on the flight to Romania, the man sitting...

So many twenty-somethings of my generation wish they could just escape, be it from a mundane, ball and chain desk job, or a jobless after-college experience, or the debt-filled, stress-fueled lifestyle that our society now generates while we struggle just to keep our heads above water. We sometimes dream of just running away, hopping on a plane for a grand adventure we deserve, taking in all life has to offer – not watching it fly by as we put our nose to the grindstone day and day out, just to pay out our asses to do it again the next day.
That, in essence, is the story of Charlie Countryman, Fredrik Bond’s first directorial feature – except a death in our titular character’s family also prompts his adventure to a faraway land full of beautiful women, new friends, violence, gangsters, and incriminating evidence. A good five months since it premiered at a packed Eccles house in Park City, Deadline reports that Millennium Entertainment have picked up one of the worst films presented at this year’s Sundance paying a “low seven figures” for what is essentially a hollow, dramatic exercise in existentialism that we broken down and muted, could not surprisingly pass off as components of glossy ad campaign for eau de toilette. Despite placing high on the annual Black List, Fredrik Bond’s The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman‘s stars the unaffecting Shia Labeouf, Mads Mikkelsen and Evan Rachel Wood (who finds herself in a slump of her own when you pair this perf with another turkey in the TriBeCa preemed A Case of You). Expect a year-end or 2014 release for the rom-actioner with an additional North American festival showing prior to release.

The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman is not only the directorial debut of helmer Fredrik Bond, but also one of the challenging features former child star Shia Labeouf has taken on to shake up his image, and establish himself as an actor of depth and merit. The original screenplay by Matt Drake centers on the titular character, a young man who makes the mistake of falling for the moll (Evan Rachel Wood) of a dangerous crime lord. Labeouf stars as Countryman, and caused a stir when he confessed he'd dropped acid as an experiment he hoped would help him better understand the role. Since then, this trippy romance premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it earned buzz, but not a domestic distribution deal. Still, all's not lost as The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman is readying for its first foreign audience as part of the prestigious Berlin International Film...

As a fan of Shia Labeouf, I'm glad to see him continuing to operate in more independent territory and avoiding major studio projects. After his solid work in Lawless and his strong work here, it seems the indie scene has revitalized him creatively, and with a movie with Lars Von Trier on the way, the future continues to...

Upstream Color
After the premiere of his mysterious and disturbing head trip Upstream Color, director Shane Carruth extrapolated that he was “in love with a building, an architecture to a story that will feel like a fable or a myth.” When asked about how he compared this film to his debut Primer, he strongly stated that his second feature is “vastly better and not really connected.” They are completely different and he loves how its construction ensures that it “descends into nothing but subtext.”
Kris is derailed from her life when she is drugged by a small-time thief. But something bigger is going on. She is unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world, moving to nematodes, plant life, livestock, and back again. Monday night Park City hosted the World Premiere of The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman and a new image had arrived before it.
The Necessary Death is the feature debut of highly acclaimed commercial video director Fredrik Bond.
It’s a passionate, tender love story surrounded by chaos, violence, and crime, written by Matt Drake (Project X), starring Shia Labeouf and Evan Rachel Wood, about an American who travels abroad, falls in love with a Romanian girl, but runs afoul of her violent ex-boyfriend played by the always unusual Mads Mikkelsen.
The film is sort of a Guy Ritchie movie meets Twin Peaks in which the love story fights with the thriller: violent, bloody, loud, confusing, bordering on soft-core porn and completely full of itself. And, Bucharest looks cool.
The soundtrack from Dead Mono and Christophe Beck and choice of excellent music like M83, Moby and Sigur Ros are obviously...

*Note Updates in next blog: Sundance By Numbers Update
Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.
Bravo Sundance! On all fronts it is carrying through its original purpose and vision.
Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the original visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

How can you be a first-time filmmaker and a veteran all at the same time? Well, if you're director Fredrik Bond, it's easy. For the last decade or so, he's been an acclaimed, award-winning commercials director, picking up honors from the British Television Advertising Awards and being nominated twice for the Directors Guild of America’s Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials. He's been a globetrotter as well, growing up in Sweden, studying in New York, living in England and Los Angeles, and always working his passport for wherever the job would take him. But this week Bond arrives in Park City, ready to prove himself at the feature level with "The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman," and we had a chance to speak with him before the fest about the movie. The first thing he shared was how much he appreciated the Black List-ed script by Matt Drake ("Project X"). "Over the years,...

With the exception of a pair of Fox Searchlight titles (The East and Stoker), Warner Bros.’ Before Midnight and 6 hour mini-series from Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Premieres program is chock-full of acquisition friendly titles. Fourteen in all, the selection includes several returning filmmakers in Drake Doremus, David Gordon Green, Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman and Michael Winterbottom and Joseph Gordon-Levitt — all filmmakers that I accurately predicted would return with product and when we find cast names/star wattage we usually find quality – not surprisingly, four Blacklist listed projects The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (’07), A.C.O.D. (’08), Stoker (’10), The Way, Way Back (’10) (joining the previously announced Toy’s House and Spectacular Now) are among the announcements. And final note: the chances of bumping into either actors Dermont Mulroney or James Franco at a Park City party have now increased: Franco who brings his experimental directed film Interior. Leather Bar....

Sundance Film Festival 2013 is becoming more and more promising seemingly with each passing day.
Last week, we heard the brilliant first line-up, which included the likes of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Kill Your Darlings, The Spectacular Now, Touchy Feely, and Crystal Fairy.
Then came the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier line-ups, which included Sightseers’ Us premiere, S-vhs, and We Are What We Are.
And tonight the festival has announced its line-ups in the Premieres and Documentary Premieres category, and they are somewhat amazing.
Topping the list is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature directorial debut, Don Jon’s Addiction, which is all but guaranteed to be one of the best films of next year.
Also heading to Utah will be Zal Batmanglij’s The East, starring Ellen Page, Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård, and Toby Kebbell, seeing the director re-team with Marling once more following the success of Sound of My Voice.

Shia Labeouf is leaving blockbusters behind with a major role in Robert Redford‘s political thriller The Company You Keep, as well as in Trier‘s erotic drama The Nymphomaniac and another upcoming film, called The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman.
Here’s the first image of the 26-year-old thesp sporting some greasy-looking longer hair with a scruffy beard and mustache, set next to the carefully coifed Evan Rachel Wood(The Ides of March).
Directed by the first-time feature film director Fredrik Bond and based on the Black List script written by Matt Drake (Project X), the noir romance is currently in post-production, also starring Mads Mikkelsen, Rupert Grint, Melissa Leo, James Buckley and Til Schweiger.
The story follows Charlie Countryman (Labeouf), who while traveling abroad falls for Gabi (Wood), a Romanian beauty whose unreachable heart belongs to another, her gangster ex Nigel (Mikkelsen).
Expect that movie on next year’s festival circuit.

"The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman" is coming, and it looks like it could be right around the corner. Over the summer we learned that a Sundance or Berlin premiere was being eyed, and rarely do things happen in a vacuum in the movie world, so keep your eyes peeled for the picture as the first image of Shia Labeouf and Evan Rachel Wood has arrived. Based on the Black List script penned by Matt Drake ("Project X"), the story follows Charlie Countryman (Labeouf), who while traveling abroad falls for Gabi (Wood), a Romanian beauty whose unreachable heart has its origins in Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen), her violent, charismatic ex. As the darkness of Gabi’s past increasingly envelops him, Charlie resolves to win her heart, or die trying. And with a pretty eclectic cast in support including Aubrey Plaza, Til Schweiger, Rupert Grint, Melissa Leo and James Buckley, we're curious...

The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman sees Shia Labeouf continuing to impress and defy expectations, breaking even further beyond his origins as the young lead of the Transformers franchise.
Lawless proved for a lot of people that he’s capable of so much, and with a handful of very interesting projects due out in the next year, we’ve got a lot to look forward to in Labeouf.
Starring in the lead, the first image of Labeouf has now debuted over at Collider, seen opposite Evan Rachel Wood, who plays his love interest, Gabi.

June 29th, 2012, 1:10pm– A new article from Screendaily lists Rupert Grint as one of the speakers at the Creative Content day on July 31 which will highlight the UK industry to global leaders. Rupert will be talking about the Harry Potter phenomenon with producer David Heyman and Josh Berger from Warner Bros. Although this is a closed event for UK and international industry, it is interesting to see how Rupert will help shed light on the UK industry alongside many other prominent and respected people from various branches of creativity. In other news, both Evan Rachel Wood and writer Matt Drake have tweeted that The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman has officially wrapped. Hopefully this means that more information will become available since it is still unclear who Rupert will play in the film. While production of Cbgb has begun in Savannah, Rupert has not begun work as Cheetah Chrome just yet,...

Project X
Stars: Thomas Mann, Jonathan Daniel Brown, Oliver Cooper, Dax Flame, Nichole Bloom, Alex Rose Wiesel, Alexis Knapp | Written by Matt Drake, Michael Bacall | Directed by Nima Nourizadeh
Project X is the latest opus from Todd Phillips, the man behind Old School and The Hangover, who here returns to his Frathouse roots as producer of this high-school based, shot documentary-style comedy that follows one epic night in the life of three teenagers – Thomas, J.B. and Costa – who, in order to up their rep at school, throw an out of control, balls-to-the-wall party to celebrate Thomas’ birthday. With disastrous results. And these aren’t your normal disastrous results either, not unless you class destroying a car, a house and an entire neighbourhood as normal party behaviour!
Like all good movies, Project X is not just a movie about a party that breaks out into a full-scale riot, oh no.

Growing up, I went to plenty of parties, but never one when the parents were out of town. I always felt I missed out on something until I heard the time my younger cousin held such an affair, resulting in $1500 in property damage (in 1980 dollars). Call me uptight or a loser, much as Thomas (Thomas Mann), is in Project X.
Designed to be the ultimate party film, it was based on the recollections of various people who attended outrageous parties while parents were out of town. Cobbling the stories together, Michael Bacall and Matt Drake wrote a script and director Nima Nourizadeh sought out relative unknowns and total unknowns to populate the cast, giving it a fresh feel. Eight different camera systems were used including the main images purportedly shot by an Av studio Dax (Dax Flame) and cell phones given to various extras, who shot moments without others realizing it.

Chloe Moretz‘s titular casting in Carrie has earned a polarized reaction or two (can there only be one polarized reaction?) these past couple of months, but it’s hard to deny they’re getting these adult roles down pat. A few weeks after Julianne Moore found herself playing Carrie’s dangerous, God-fearing mother, BloodyDisgusting reports that Judy Greer (The Descendants) is in formal talks for a part — one only deemed with the title of “Gym Teacher.”
While I really, truly hope her character is only named and referred to as “Gym Teacher” in the actual film, both Stephen King‘s source novel and Brian De Palma‘s original adaptation fill this stock part with one of the few (if not the only) adults who show Carrie any sympathy. It’s one of the bigger dramatic roles — particularly when you talk about a film whose fidelity to actual drama I...

We haven’t reported much yet on The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, which is a shame, because it’s a promising sounding project. So, seeing as there’s a new bit of casting news regarding the film, let’s use that as an excuse to cover all the basics, shall we? The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman started off as a Black List script by a screenwriter named Matt Drake (Project X) that was eventually picked up by Voltage Pictures and given to Fredrik Bond to direct. A studio synopsis for the film explains it by saying, “Charlie Countryman was just a normal guy…until he fell in love with the one girl who will probably get him killed. When Charlie meets the absolutely irresistible Gabi she’s already been claimed by Nigel, an insanely violent crime boss with a gang of thugs at his disposal. Armed with little more than his wit and naïve charm...

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: June 19, 2012
Price: DVD $28.98, Blu-ray $29.95
Studio: Warner Home Video
The party is on in Project X, the R-rated comedy movie that grossed a tidy $55 million.
Written by Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Matt Drake (TV’s Spin City) and the first feature film directed by Nima Nourizadeh, Project X could be called Teens Behaving Badly.
Featuring a relatively unknown cast, the movie tells the story of three high school seniors who throw a birthday party to make a name for themselves. But, as often happens with these kinds of things, word of the party spreads and the night spirals out of the control.
The cast includes Oliver Cooper and Jonathan Daniel Brown in their first movie, Thomas Mann (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) and Miles Teller (Footloose).
Critics gave the raspberry to the film, calling it unoriginal, unpleasant and vomit inducing. Ouch!

In the time since he was first attached to “The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman,” Shia Labeouf has knocked out a couple of "Transformers" movies, and even started his own graphic novel-penning career, while Zac Efron briefly took over the part. With Labeouf back on board, however, he can finally put down his coloring-in kit: with news that two more established actors have joined the crime thriller, all seems ready to go.
Deadline and Variety report that Melissa Leo (who’s currently shooting the Tom Cruise vehicle “Oblivion” in New Orleans) and German superstar Til Schweiger ("King Arthur," "Inglourious Basterds") have joined the project, which is directed by commercials grad Fredrik Bond and written by Matt Drake (“Project X”).
