As far as investigators go, Jim Rockford (James Garner) is a bit of a departure from the mostly-polished (Columbo excepted) detectives of television's first decade. A slouchily dressed detective who lived in a trailer and served time in San Quentin, Rockford was cool — if not always collected. "The Rockford Files" ran for six seasons on NBC beginning in 1974 and was later resurrected for a series of '90s TV movies. In that time, audiences were introduced not only to Rockford, but to a cast of supporting characters including his truck driver dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.), LAPD pal Becker (Joe Santos), and the con artist Angel (Stuart Margolin).
Garner passed away in 2014, and only a few "Rockford Files" castmates are still with us today. Those who are still around include notable recurring guest stars like famously mustachioed "Blue Bloods" star Tom Selleck, Egot-winning multi-hyphenate Rita Moreno, and "Happy Gilmore" director...

Drew Barrymore says she got Adam Sandler to confirm that he’s in the process of writing Happy Gilmore 2.
Following comments that Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, shared in March that Sandler showed him a first draft of the sequel, Barrymore says she went straight to the source and texted her longtime friend and 50 First Dates co-star to ask if it was true.
In a preview from the latest episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, she dropped news of their conversation, generating more buzz surrounding the possible sequel.
“I want it. I need it. I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison,” said Barrymore. “I sent Sandler a video [of it]. He sent me another video back and I’m waiting to see if he’s confirming about the Happy Gilmore 2 script.”

Adam Sandler’s sports comedy film Happy Gilmore was a controversial project, as evident in its mixed reviews from critics. It took so many liberties with the rules of golf that even a professional player could not believe the script even existed.

The movie ended up becoming a commercial success, though, and with that, it is getting a sequel. Happy Gilmore 2 has been announced by actor Christopher McDonald.
Professional Golfer Could Not Believe Adam Sandler’s Original Script For Happy Gilmore
Golf pro Mark Lye was hired as Happy Gilmore’s official script consultant and upon reading the paper, he kept crossing out parts that should not be there, probably shaking his head as he did that, and wondering if there was anything they got right. He said via PGA Tour:
“You gotta be crazy. You cannot do a movie like that. They had the green jacket.

Adam Sandler is one of the most prolific comedy actors working in Hollywood right now. The actor has his particular brand of comedy, with his gruff voice, loud humor, and the inclusion of Kevin James in many of his films. Though the actor has proved his acting chops in more dramatic roles such as Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems, his comedic roles are still classics.
One of his breakthrough comedies was the sports comedy Happy Gilmore. The film follows the story of an ice hockey player who competes in a local golf tournament. The film was a huge commercial hit, putting Sandler on the map as a bonafide comedy star. His co-star Christopher McDonald mentioned that Sandler had shown him a copy of a sequel for the film.

As Adam Sandler prepares for a sequel to his 1996 classic comedy Happy Gilmore, which is reportedly in the works, let’s take a look at the original movie starring Christopher McDonald. Playing the role of Shooter McGavin, the antagonist in the movie, McDonald ended up being Happy Gilmore’s main opponent.

However, while the movie catapulted his fame, Christopher McDonald had once come dangerously close to missing out on the role. The iconic character of the talented but snobby golfer in Adam Sandler’s comedy flick Happy Gilmore was almost played by someone else. But thanks to McDonald’s last-minute change of mind, the actor finally landed the role of Shooter.

Happy Gilmore star Christopher McDonald hopes that the Adam Sandler-led sports comedy is driving toward a follow-up.
McDonald, who played villain Shooter McGavin in director Dennis Dugan’s 1996 Universal movie, said during an appearance Friday on Audacy radio show 92.3 The Fan that Sandler recently showed him a draft of the script for a Happy Gilmore sequel.
“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” McDonald recalls. “He shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.” The actor continued, “He did show me that, and I thought, ‘Wow, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans, demand it, damn it!”

Fellow '90s kids, this one's for us. Take one of our greatest comedic stars at the height of his powers, add a little golf (by way of hockey), and sprinkle in one unforgettable cameo by the legendary Bob Barker, and you get a beloved comedy classic in "Happy Gilmore." It may have taken the better part of 30 years, but all signs are pointing to a long-overdue sequel after years and years of rumors over whether "Happy Gilmore 2" would ever actually happen.
The potentially headline-grabbing news, reported with a healthy dose of caveats, comes courtesy of Deadline ... and from a somewhat unlikely source. Rather than getting the news straight from either the studio or Sandler himself, actor Christopher McDonald (who played the awfully unlikable yet aptly named pro golfer Shooter McGavin) revealed the new development while participating in a radio interview on Audacy's 92.3 The Fan. You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Through no fault of his own, Michael Keaton’s fun, nostalgic return as Batman had imploded when The Flash would debut to disaster and his follow-up in Batgirl would equally become infamous by getting shelved and locked away. Keaton is bouncing back in a big way with his second directorial effort, Knox Goes Away. Keaton’s directorial debut came in 2008 with the crime thriller, The Merry Gentleman. The trailer for Knox Goes Away has dropped courtesy of Saban Films and features a quote from our own Chris Bumbray, which was also featured on the poster, which says Keaton gives “A career-best performance.”
Knox Goes Away revolves around a contract killer who, after being diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia, is presented with the opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son. But to do so,...

Carl Weathers almost wasn't cast in 'Happy Gilmore'.The 76-year-old 'Rocky' actor - who died "peacefully in his sleep" at his Los Angeles home earlier this week - won a host of new fans in his 1996 role as Derick 'Chubbs' Peterson, the mentor to Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore, a highly-strung former hockey player who discovers a unique talent for golf. However, he almost didn't get the part as both director Dennis Dugan and star Sandler were unsure about the casting.Dugan told The Hollywood Reporter: "[His agent said] '‘I have a client, Carl Weathers, and he’d love to read for this' And I said, ‘Isn’t he a football player guy?’ He said, ‘Yeah, but he really wants to read for it.’"Adam goes, ‘Oh, man, I don’t know. I didn’t picture that'. [But] he comes in — charming, wonderful, sweet, nice guy — and killed it, and got the part right there.

Rocky Balboa himself, Sylvester Stallone, took a moment to pay tribute to his co-star Carl Weathers, who died Thursday in his sleep at 76.
The actors fought it out in the ring for the first two films of the famous boxing franchise, and they remained friends in the decades following the final installment, 1985’s Rocky IV.
Stallone shared a video on his Instagram Friday, remembering Weathers and their time together in their breakthrough films. In the caption, he partially wrote, “We lost a legend yesterday. My life was forever changed for the better the day I met Carl Weathers.”
In the minute-long video, the Tulsa King star explained that the film franchise wouldn’t have been what it became had it not been for Weathers’ Apollo Creed.
“Today is an incredibly sad day for me,” Stallone began the video. “I mean, I’m so torn up I can’t even tell you.

Carl Weathers, who died Thursday at age 76, made his name as the formidable boxing adversary Apollo Creed in the Rocky films. But it was his career pivot with the 1996 Adam Sandler comedy Happy Gilmore that made him newly relevant to a younger generation. As it turns out, his road to landing in the beloved comedy was an unlikely one.
Dennis Dugan — who directed Happy Gilmore, in addition to such other comedy hits as Problem Child, Big Daddy and the Grown Ups films — tells The Hollywood Reporter that Weathers “literally couldn’t be a nicer guy, and he was so Chubbs. Nobody else could have ever been Chubbs but him.” The film centers on Sandler’s title character, who can’t hack it as a hockey player but becomes a surprising golf sensation, thanks to his monster drives and the assistance of his mentor, Derick “Chubbs” Peterson.

It’s getting to be that I’m afraid to leave the house. I mean, you never know when you’re going to run into a hitman. If you see movies on a regular basis, you know what I’m talking about. They seem to be everywhere, and they’re often going through personal problems that affect their work. But few cinematic assassins have been quite as beleaguered as the one in Knox Goes Away, receiving its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Michael Keaton, who also directed the film, plays John Knox, a contract killer diagnosed with a rare disease causing full-onset dementia within a matter of weeks. And that’s only one of his problems.
Another is the sudden reappearance of his estranged adult son, Miles (James Marsden, not underplaying), who shows up at his home covered in blood and begging for help covering up the brutal murder he’s just committed.

It seemed like he'd be with us forever, but the iconic game show presented and primetime TV mainstay Bob Barker has died at the age of 99. Barker was best known as the long-running host of "The Price is Right" revival, which premiered on CBS in 1972. Barker told contestants to "Come on down!" and ushered them through the fabulous Showcase Showdown innumerable times during his tenure as host through 2007. But even before those three-plus decades of television excellence, Barker had already hosted the popular game show "Truth or Consequences" for 21 years, between 1956 and 1975.
Barker is perhaps the most prolific game show presenter in American broadcast history, but his eminence extended beyond daytime TV. His trademark combination of unflappable reliability, chivalrous old-school charm, and slight underbelly of mischievous caddishness lent itself to a remarkable ability to send up his own persona in cameo roles in films and scripted television series. Barbara Bosson, who received Emmy nominations in five consecutive years for her turn as the divorcee Fay Furillo on the acclaimed NBC drama Hill Street Blues, co-created by her then-husband Steven Bochco, has died. She was 83.
Bosson died Saturday in Los Angeles, her son, director-producer Jesse Bochco, announced.
The actress also was known for her work on three ABC series: as the divorced boss of John Ritter’s San Francisco police inspector on the 1987-89 comedy-drama Hooperman, as the mayor of Los Angeles on the 1990 musical drama Cop Rock and as prosecutor Miriam Grasso on the 1995-97 legal drama Murder One. Salma Hayek Pinault Was Told She Was Too 'Sexy' For Comedy Until Adam Sandler's Grown Ups Came Along
As a producer, Adam Sandler has always managed to attract an impressive litany of talent. Although the films released through Sandler's studio, Happy Madison, regularly get terrible reviews, they tend to be very lucrative and high-profile actors keep coming back for more work. This may be because, as the rumor mill has it, Sandler is a relentlessly decent and kind human being that others love to work with. As such, Al Pacino can be seen in "Jack and Jill," Susan Sarandon appeared in "That's My Boy," and the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Aniston, and Winona Ryder have all played Sandler's wife or love interest in his movies.
In Dennis Dugan's 2010 film "Grown Ups," Salma Hayek Pinault plays Roxanne, a successful fashion designer, and the wife of a talent agent named Lenny (Sandler). "Grown Ups" is about how Lenny is still very close with the circle of...

Chris Farley is one of the greatest comedic what-ifs in recent history. The actor-comedian was an electric standout performer on "Saturday Night Live" and had almost unlimited star potential. Farley tragically died of a drug overdose in 1997, right when his film career was taking off. Had he lived longer, I can only imagine the comedies he'd have put out by now. I could also imagine a world where an older Farley takes a later-career dramatic turn, like his peer, Adam Sandler. He was truly a once-in-a-lifetime comedic talent.
The tragic story of Farley's early end is told again and again, so most people today are aware of his immense comedy skills. He also possessed other, more unexpected, abilities. Farley's last feature film before his passing was "Beverly Hills Ninja." A favorite film of Christian Bale, the movie followed Farley as an orphan who is raised by a gang of ninjas.

While film as a medium is, by design, very focused on appealing to large audiences, the respect of other filmmakers and actors can mean a lot to those in the industry. Imagine the thrill for a young Wes Anderson when he heard that one of his earliest films was considered a favorite by the legendary Martin Scorsese. The validation of one's peers is something almost everybody seeks, and to receive it is a great sign of respect.
Director Dennis Dugan probably isn't super accustomed to receiving praise from his fellow Hollywood types. The director of many of Adam Sandler's feature films, including "Happy Gilmore," "Grown Ups," and the inimitable "Jack and Jill" is probably satisfied enough with the money he's made to accept that he's never going to produce a critical darling. So it may have come as a surprise for Dugan when one of his earliest and least...

Producers of the indie film musical “Americana Dream” have tapped Nashville-based music artists Mary Sarah and Sam Varga to play the story’s central couple, Billie Carton and Lucky Fontana.
Sarah and Varga nabbed the leading roles after an extensive nationwide search for singer-songwriters to act in the original musical written and directed by Ate de Jong and co-written by Variety’s Steven Gaydos.
“Americana Dream” takes viewers behind the scenes of the film’s titular reality TV music competition program, where Lucky and Billie transition from imposters willing to do anything for money and fame, to a real couple, willing to sacrifice their dreams of success for real love and their real music.
Sarah was a finalist on season 10 of NBC’s “The Voice” and is set to star in Justin Ward’s upcoming film comedy “Paradise: The Movie.” Sarah recorded her first album “Bridges,” when she was only...

Robert Hogan, a TV character actor who was a regular on Peyton Place for two seasons and recurred on The Wire and such other popular series as Law & Order and Alice, has died. He was 87. His family said he died May 27 of pneumonia complications at his home in coastal Maine.
Hogan amassed more than 150 credits during a six-decade career, guesting multiple times on such classic shows as Murder, She Wrote, Gunsmoke, The F.B.I., Barnaby Jones, 77 Sunset Strip, The Rockford Files and as Louis Sobotka in four Season 2 episodes of HBO’s The Wire. He also played Greg Stemple in a half-dozen Alice episodes during the early 1980s.
He also played the Rev. Tom Winter — whose affairs certainly were more than clerical — in more than 60 episodes of the New England-set 1960s romantic drama Peyton Place.

Near the pinnacle of director-driven ’70s cinema is this marvelous comedy about a ‘American Miss’ contest, and the swirl of personalities that come to support, promote and ogle the teen beauties just learning the ropes of the good old U.S. hype machine. Bruce Dern, Barbara Feldon and Michael Kidd are just wonderful as the adults in charge of the pageantry; Annette O’Toole, Joan Prather and Melanie Griffifth are among the hopefuls, learning an early lesson in a time honored, entirely bogus Americana ritual: as Michael Kidd says, he teaches these sweet kids to dance and behave like Vegas showgirls. It’s deceptively, distractingly funny — and as true as the day is long.

Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore still has the skills 25 years after the Dennis Dugan film premiered. Sandler celebrated Happy Gilmore’s 25th anniversary on Twitter by showing off his golfing chops in a video.
“It’s been 25 years since I’ve done this, let’ see what happens. Shooter McGavin, this is for you,” Sandler says, dedicated his impressive putt to his on-screen rival. “I’m not lying to you. That is smashed. Smashed. That went pretty well. You’re dead, Shooter.”
In the film, Sandler stars as a retired hockey player who seeks to put his golf skills to the test to save his grandmother’s house. Sandler starred alongside Julie Bowen, Frances Bay and Christopher McDonald, who appeared as Shooter McGavin.
However, Sandler wasn’t the only one channeling his Happy Gilmore character to celebrate the film. Shortly after the Hubie Halloween actor’s video, McDonald shot his own...

2020 was a disappointing year by pretty much every metric in existence – so why should the movies be an exception? Whether viewed in a theater or in the safety and comfort of home, here are 11 films that left me looking for the exits:
10. “Irresistible”: During his tenure at “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart spoke truth to power and keenly observed the hypocrisies and the contrivances of the American political system. As the writer-director of this supposed satire of electoral politics, he vacillates between the painfully obvious and the ludicrously improbable.
9. “Superintelligence”: A sentient AI program (voiced by the ubiquitous James Corden) seeks to wipe out humanity unless do-gooder Melissa McCarthy can convince him otherwise, in another disappointing collaboration between McCarthy and director Ben Falcone, her husband. (Falcone is an inspired comic performer but has yet to make a case for his career as a filmmaker.)

The centerpiece of “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters” is a sweetly engaging story about the improbable autumnal romance between an impossibly demanding celebrity caterer, played by a perfectly cast Jeremy Irons, and the age-appropriate, sight-impaired free spirit (a very winning Diane Keaton) who manages to locate a warm heart beneath his frosty demeanor. Unfortunately — indeed, tragically — this appealing narrative is paid only sporadic attention during the run of writer-director Dennis Dugan’s haphazard amalgamation of loosely interconnected storylines that, save for the scenes involving Keaton and Irons, run the gamut from blandly predictable to overbearingly unfunny.
To put it another way: If “Love, Actually” had actually been as bad as its most vociferous detractors have long insisted, it would have looked and sounded a lot like this misfire.
Most of the events are driven in various ways by the upcoming wedding of a Boston mayoral candidate (Dennis Staroselsky) who frets...

Chicago – Dennis Dugan, in directing Adam Sandler (“Happy Gilmore”), Chris Farley (“Beverly Hills Ninja”) and John Ritter (“Problem Child”), can rightly be considered a comedy director icon. He also for his latest film, “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters,” developed the story and wrote the screenplay for the first time.
An impending wedding is the backdrop for the film, as it weaves multiple storylines regarding the search for love by a colorful group of characters. They include an inexperienced wedding planner nicknamed “The Wedding Trasher” (Maggie Grace), a fussy celebrity caterer (Jeremy Irons) negotiating a “blind date” (Diane Keaton) and a Duck Boat tour guide (Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor) looking for his Cinderella. It all comes together, connecting the love encounters and the nuptials. The film also features Melinda Hill, Jesse McCartney and even director Dugan takes a role.

The title promises disaster, and the movie delivers: “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters” is a witless, charmless, barely-written, indifferently acted, hideously shot, and generally odious waste of 90 minutes.
In stringing together various overlapping love stories, all of them thoroughly irritating and utterly lacking in human insight, writer-director Dennis Dugan seems to be auditioning to take over the painfully inane ensemble pieces of late-period Garry Marshall. I once joked that Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day” made “Love Actually” look like “Nashville,” but “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters” makes “Valentine’s Day” look like “The Shop Around the Corner.”
Dugan has spent the last quarter-century as one of the main co-conspirators of the Happy Madison Death-of-Cinema Fun Factory, but his terrible Adam Sandler movies (including “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” and “Grown Ups 2”) at least offer the allure of big names collecting a paycheck in movies that might not be funny...

As a premise for comedy, a wedding is a fairly foolproof device, allowing characters who would ordinarily never cross paths to meet in increasingly tangled plot strands. You almost have to try to mess that up. Dennis Dugan has definitely messed up in Love, Weddings & Other Disasters, an unfunny, cliched and sometimes offensive romantic comedy, which he wrote and directed.
Jeremy Irons and Diane Keaton must have had better things to do, yet here they are. How bad are these roles? He plays Lawrence, a dapper, fussbudget high-end caterer in Boston, a widower whose friends stop by one day while ...

With a couple's impending wedding as the backdrop, Love, Weddings & Other Disasters weaves multiple storylines as it follows the search for love by a colorful group of characters including: an inexperienced wedding planner nicknamed “The Wedding Trasher”; a fussy celebrity caterer; his blind date; and a tour-bus guide looking for his Cinderella. How their lives and loves intersect is half the fun in this film that proves romance is alive and well... and as crazy as ever! Of course it is. The movie stars Diane Keaton, Jeremy Irons, Maggie Grace, Jesse McCartney, Chandra West, Diego Boneta, & Andrew Bachelor. This should look better than it ...

How does romance survive in an increasingly chaotic world? The interconnected stories of “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters” examine the question with differing results. Led by a star-studded lineup, the Dennis Dugan project uses a roadmap laid out by previous titles like the ubiquitous Christmas classic “Love Actually.” In the process, it packs in as many possibilities as it can during a short ninety-minute runtime.

There are very few actors afforded the opportunity to steer the direction of their own careers without making any compromises, and Adam Sandler is one of the names on that exclusive list. His Happy Madison Productions outfit is responsible for the overwhelming majority of his output, and as a result, the 54 year-old essentially has carte blanche to do whatever he wants.
Outside of his rare forays into more dramatic territory, Sandler’s movies generally feature his established roster of supporting players that includes the likes of Kevin James, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Chris Rock, Peter Dante and Allen Covert to name but a small few. Even the crew largely remains the same, with writer Tim Herlihy scripting twelve of the actor’s star vehicles while directors Steven Brill, Dennis Dugan and Frank Coraci are responsible for helming a combined total of eighteen Happy Madison features.

Defining a successful movie release has been a fraught task lately due to the coronavirus pandemic, as premium theatrical films shift to digital debuts and massive blockbusters get kicked down the calendar.
Thanks to a few transparent scoreboards like the iTunes store, however, the industry can see plainly when a hit is a hit. Last weekend, the Saban Films release “The Silencing” made a lot of noise as the top rental in the country, at the attractive price point of $6.99. The film has amassed roughly $5 million in PVOD sales, insiders familiar with the tally told Variety.
The Nikolaj Coster-Waldau thriller also opened on 79 screens, taking in $53,205 according to box office data, making it the top grossing new film release with the highest per-screen average in the U.S. The modestly-budgeted action film follows a string of other Cinderella stories surrounding low-cost genre fare with popcorn appeal and a bold name...
