Long before every conceivable comic book character received a film adaptation in the hopes of becoming the next blockbuster, there was Superman. While box office returns diminished over the course of four movies, the Man of Steel’s big-screen success heralded a crop of other superhero movies. Producers Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan swooped in to acquire the film rights to DC Comics’ other most well-known character, Batman (and they remain executive producers on every Batman movie), along with a more obscure title, Swamp Thing.
Not unlike a common trajectory in the modern comic book movie boom – in which filmmakers who have proven themselves in the genre space are given the keys to superhero properties – Wes Craven was enlisted to write and direct 1982’s Swamp Thing despite his unfamiliarity with the source material. While he would go on to make a name for himself with A Nightmare on Elm Street next,...

Veering sharply away from the visceral horror that put him on the map, Wes Craven followed up the game-changing The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes with the one-two punch of the silly, surreal Deadly Blessing and the comic-book adaptation Swamp Thing. An enjoyable enough romp if taken as an amiably lunk-headed action flick, Swamp Thing starts off with an effectively mounted first act that soon gives way to a lot of splashing around in the swamps, punctuated with some incongruously poetic (and oddly endearing) Beauty and the Beast-type moments, and liberally peppered with all the airboat crashes and cigar-chomping David Hess close-ups you could ever want. Add to that running tally Adrienne Barbeau doffing her wardrobe for some tastefully lensed skinny-dipping and an ultra-suave, Nietzsche-spouting turn from Louis Jourdan as villainous Dr. Anton Arcane and it all adds up to a surefire cult film in the making.

It was announced earlier this year that a brand new Swamp Thing horror movie is on DC’s slate of upcoming projects, said to “investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.” James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) soon became attached to direct for WB/DC, and Mangold provides an update in a new chat with Variety.
During the chat, Mangold stresses multiple times that he’s not interested in treating franchise installments like feature length episodes of a television series, but rather his intent as a filmmaker is to tell complete stories from beginning to end. In other words, don’t expect Mangold’s Swamp Thing to merely be a small part of much larger DC plans for the character.

James Mangold may be bringing one of DC’s creepiest heroes to life. The “Logan” and “Ford v. Ferrari” director is reportedly in early talks to tackle “Swamp Thing,” one of the upcoming films from DC Studio’s first chapter of movies under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s command, THR first reported Wednesday.
It’s unclear whether Mangold would both write and direct the film or his exact involvement. Mangold did however seem to confirm his interest on his Twitter, via a post with a panel from the character’s comic series, drawn by co-creator Bernie Wrightson. The post was also retweeted by Gunn.

Representatives from Warner Bros. Discovery. Sources told IndieWire that Mangold is a longtime “Swamp Thing” fan who approached the new regime at DC with his idea for the film, and that he will both direct and write should the project go forward.

For what feels like the millionth time, a new official slate of projects exists for the DC Universe. Created by DC Studios co-chair and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran (along with a slew of veteran writers), the Dcu will introduce a new Superman and Batman to the world, among other, relatively lesser-known characters. One of which is "Swamp Thing," a film that revolves around a longtime DC Comics hero that has not received the big-screen treatment since the late '80s. The upcoming monster flick, which has "Logan" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" helmer James Mangold in talks to direct, see the Dcu lean into straight-up horror for the first time, submerging "Swamp Thing" into a genre aptly fit for the supernatural character.
In a slate of refreshingly weird Dcu projects, "Swamp Thing" may just be the most exciting addition. Although we've gotten live-action adaptations before,...

Akira Kurosawa wrote the original story for this slam-bang action picture that finally got Cannon Films on a, ‘Hey this is a great movie’ list or two. Mean, nasty, desperate men make an impossible escape attempt across a frozen landscape that might as well be on the moon. Jon Voight gets to use the same eccentric gimmicks that Dustin Hoffman exploited, and comes off great while Andrei Konchalovsky showed Cannon what a brilliant director could do. The show also established Eric Roberts and Rebecca De Mornay as talents to watch.

Only one episode into its first season, Swamp Thing has been canceled by the streaming service DC Universe.
Multiple outlets, including Deadline and Entertainment Weekly, report that DC Universe has decided not to move forward with Swamp Thing, which premiered on the streaming service on Friday, May 31st.
Warner Bros. has not officially commented on the cancellation, but Deadline reports that the streaming service is being "reevaluated" following the "At&T acquisition of Time Warner."
Back in April, StarNews reported that the show's previously planned 13-episode first season had been cut down to 10.
At this point, it looks like a new episode of Swamp Thing will continue to be released every Friday until this season comes to an end. Time will tell if the series can find a home at a different streaming service or network, and we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed.

The Swamp Thing will have to return to its swamp.
DC Universe has canceled the show after a single season, and the news comes after only one episode of the series has aired.
Based on the DC Comics characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, the one-hour drama series followed Cdc researcher Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed), who returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. She develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland, only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby discovers that the swamp holds mystical secrets, and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Mears joins a Swamp Thing cast that already...

Last week's return of "Arrow" to the CW marks the beginning of a new wave of DC television series. Not only have Warner Bros. and DC announced their plans for a "Flash" spinoff series sometime next year but they've also made mention of a Jim Gordon-centric "Gotham" TV series over at Fox.
Marvel Studios may be killing it in the Cinematic Universe, but it seems like DC has television on lock. In fact, DC has always been pretty proficient with their TV series. Case in point being "Swamp Thing: The Series," a TV show based on a DC character made popular by Alan Moore in the 80's. With Guillermo del Toro's plans to include Swamp Thing in his "Justice League Dark" film, we think now's as good a time as any to reflect back on the "Swamp Thing" TV series.

Chicago – After making incredibly influential, low-budget horror films like “The Last House on the Left” and “The Hills Have Eyes,” Wes Craven was essentially at a career crossroads. Keep staying off the radar or join contemporaries like John Carpenter in a quest for more mainstream success. Thus, “Swamp Thing” was born. While it is seen as a cult B-movie now, this was Craven’s attempt at showing he could do something more crowd-pleasing than his dark fare.
The result is mixed, at best. I’m a big Craven fan and would recommend this release just for the commentary track if you are as well (the man’s a great speaker), but I’ve never loved “Swamp Thing” and a rewatch on Blu-ray hasn’t changed my mind.

Swamp Thing is based on the popular DC Comics character and couldn’t be any more different than Craven’s previous film, Deadly Blessing. A departure into science fiction for the horror director and one of Adrienne Barbeau’s early genre films, it’s a Beauty and the Beast romance with some industrial sabotage thrown in for good measure. Just released to Blu-ray / DVD by Scream Factory, Swamp Thing is a great blast of nostalgia for kids of the 1980’s.
Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) has been holed up in the swamps with his sister (Nannette Brown), working on a way to hybridize animal and plant DNA in an attempt solve the world’s hunger problems. Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) enters the picture as a government agent sent to investigate and report on his progress. The two quickly strike up a relationship, but their time together is interrupted when a...

Swamp Thing (1982) is a peculiar entry in the Wes Craven canon. For a director who cut his teeth in porn (most directors began their careers as editors in this field in the early 1970s) and directed such fare as The Last House on the Left (1972) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Swamp Thing is a much gentler film. One of the few PG-rated entries to his credit, it was made just a few years prior to his very own A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the movie that turned the horror film industry on its ear with the introduction of Fred Krueger and which spawned one of the most successful franchises in the genre.
Released on Friday, February 19, 1982 by the late Joseph E. Levine’s long-defunct Embassy Pictures, Swamp Thing is a film version of the DC Comic that was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Set in...

Alrighty, kids! Time to shake off all that moss and swamp water because the Scream Factory has just revealed its official artwork for the release of Wes Craven's Swamp Thing. Check it out and count the days to see Arcane get his ass kicked!
Scream announced Craven’s 1982 adaptation of the DC comic book via its Facebook page, additionally confirming yet-to-be-announced extra features. This release will be the 91-minute U.S. cut, not the extended international version that was originally (and accidentally) released by MGM in 2000. As you may recall, that version created a minor stir when a mother purchased a copy of the film (which carries a PG rating) for her young son and was understandably shocked by the copious amounts of nudity throughout.

Yesterday, we reported the completely non-shocking news that Eddie Murphy has officially been named the most overpaid actor of 2012 by Forbes. And this isn't exactly a new trend for Murphy, who also came in second on the list of most overpaid actors of 2011. In fact, given his mostly abysmal track record since the late 1980s, we'd have to say that poor Eddie is now in the running for the most overpaid actors of all time.
Which got us thinking: Which actors out there deserved to get some of that money that went to Murphy instead? Who are the most underpaid actors of all time?
With that in mind, here's a quick run down of some people who really, really should have gotten paid a whole hell of a lot more than they did for these thankless movie roles:

I remember my first Swamp Thing comic was the second issue of Volume 2 which featured a picture of Dick Durock as the monster in the original movie on the cover. My parents were strict about movies I saw so it wasn't until I went to my father's house the next Summer that I finally got a chance to see the movie on HBO. Being the monster movie lover I am, I fell in love with it.
Years later I picked up the original run by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson and fully embraced the classic 1970s Gothic horror flavor of it. When I heard DC Comics was relaunching Swamp Thing as part of their New 52 initiative, I smiled in glee and couldn't wait to get the first issue. Shout! Factory has announced a June 22 release for the third volume of the Swamp Thing television series on DVD. The set was being offered as part of their Shout! Select online exclusive line of product.
The first volume, comprising seasons one and two of the USA cable series, and volume two (beginning the third season) were released in 2008. This volume would complete the third season and series.
The series, featuring the character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, debuted on July 27, 1990 with a total of 72 episodes. The series largely followed the continuity of the horrid film adaptation by Roger Corman and starred Dick Durock who portrayed the misunderstood creature in both feature films.
While the show was once a top-rated hit for the fledgling cable channel, it was poorly received by critics and fans of the source material.

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

Producer Joel Silver says a new version of Swamp Thing is moving ahead, but won't be ready for a Halloween 2010 release.
The DC Comics character previously featured in two films - in 1982 and 1989 - and a 90s TV series. Actor Dick Durock, who played the creature, died in September.
Joel Silver told Sci Fi Wire that the Warner Bros film was moving along but wouldn't be completed in time for Halloween next year, which was suggested by fans as an ideal release date.
He said: "I don't think it'll be that soon, but we're working on it. It's happening, so we'll see what happens. I mean, it's something I'm excited about doing, and I want to hopefully pull that off, so we're working on that now."
The stories originally told of a scientist who fell into a bog after a chemical explosion and was resurrected as a humanoid mass of vegetation.

A television obituary has slipped through the cracks. Dick Durock has passed away. Who is Dick Durock, you ask? Why, he played the title character in the Swamp Thing movie written and directed by Wes Craven and its subsequent poor follow-up, as well as the television series based on the movies. Also, he played an evil Hulk in The Incredible Hulk television series and was a stuntman on various television shows including Star Trek.
I remember watching that Incredible Hulk episode as a kid, and my first thought was "that second Hulk isn't anywhere near as muscular as the first." Still, in his prime Dick Durock could have undoubtedly kicked my ass.
Just to prove how tough Dick Durock was ... I don't know many people who have long battles with pancreatic cancer. Usually, that takes you out in a hurry. If you could stand up to Lou Ferrigno, pancreatic cancer...

The Actor who played the DC Comics character Swamp Thing in two films and a television series has died at the age of 72.
Dick Durock, a 6ft 5ins former Marine, passed away at his home in Oak Park, California, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, according to his official website.
Durock wore a latex bodysuit and make-up to play the monster in 1982's Swamp Thing directed by Wes Craven; its 1989 sequel The Return of Swamp Thing; and a subsequent Swamp Thing series that ran for 71 episodes from 1990 to 1993.
The actor appeared in dozens of other movies and TV series including the shows Star Trek, Knight Rider, The A-Team, Battlestar Galactica and The Incredible Hulk.
Fans had been hoping Durock would have a cameo role in the new 3D remake of Swamp Thing or at least be able to see his classic creation come to life on the big screen again.

Without a doubt the hardest part of our job reporting on the latest horror news is when one of our own is taken from us. We're very sad to inform you that Dick Durock, best known for his role as the "Swamp Thing", passed away last week at his home in Oak Park, California, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Durock, 72, was the subject of a fond tribute from Erin Blasko of the South Bend Tribune. Excerpts follow:
Born in South Bend in the late 1930s, Richard "Dick" Durock survived an early family tragedy to become a minor Hollywood player and fanboy idol for his role as Swamp Thing in the two feature films and television series of the same name.
Despite his success, he remained a humble Midwesterner at heart.
"He didn't get a big head. He was down-to-earth, very natural," Frank Varrichione, Durock's brother-in-law, said.

Dick Durock, who played the Swamp Thing in Swamp Thing (1982), The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) and Swamp Thing the TV series from the early '90s, died in Oak Park, CA last week at age 72. The six-foot-fiver from South Bend Indiana was a former Marine who found regular work as a Hollywood stuntman and working actor, but it was his role as mossy beast to Adrienne Barbeau's beauty for which he'll be most remembered. As for Mr. Thing, he lives on -- Akiva Goldsman is adapting Alan Moore's reimagining for the big screen.

We're terribly saddened to learn of the passing of actor/stuntman Dick Durock, most recognized by genre fans for his portrayal of Swamp Thing . Durock got his start making appearances in dozens of TV shows such as Battlestar Galactica , The A-Team , Santa Barbara , Knight Rider , Airwolf and many more. Personally, this writer remembers him scaring the hell out of me as the monster in the 1981 two part episode "Frye's Creature" of The Incredible Hulk . The actor went on to play the DC comics character Swamp Thing in Wes Craven's film, again in it's sequel The Return Of Swamp Thing and also for the Swamp Thing television series, which ran for 71 episodes. He was 72 years old.

Hollywood actor and stuntman Dick Durock, most famous for portraying the DC Comics anti-hero Swamp Thing in the original 1982 Wes Craven film, passed away recently after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Durock was 72.
Durock was a television staple for years before donning the green latex suit that made him famous, appearing on The Little House on the Prairie, Quincy M.E., The Incredible Hulk, The Rockford Files, and many other shows. While critically panned, Swamp Thing had a strong cult following and Durock went on to reprise the role of Dr. Alec Holland's mutated alter-ego in The Return of Swamp Thing (1989) and in 71 episodes of the Swamp Thing TV series that ran on the USA Network.
In one of Durock's final interviews, he confessed that he was not familiar with the character before getting the part.
You know, honestly, I wasn't. I grew up in the era with Superman,...

Producer Joel Silver, best known for producing Die Hard, the Lethal Weapon series, and The Matrix series, is planning a new Swamp Thing 3D project for the big screen. “I’m developing a picture now that I’d like to do…I’ll hopefully do Swamp Thing, which is a movie we’ve had for a long time. We think that would be great to do in 3D. There are a couple of projects I’m thinking about (for the format) but not everything. I'm maybe going to do it. I like it." said Silver. The fictional character of Swamp Thing was created by Len Wein and Berni Wrightson in 1971 for the July issue of House of Secrets in the DC Comics Universe. Swamp Thing is a plant elemental or humanoid mass of vegetation, caused by an accident that chemically altered scientist Alex Olsen. He battles evil terrorists and supernatural...
