In April 2019, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences board of governors decided to change the name of the foreign-language-film category, saying it was “outdated within the global film community.” So they renamed it “international film.” It’s better, but still not precise: All films are international, whether they’re in English or not. This year’s Academy Awards race provides many reminders of that fact.

“We wanted it to be a fairy story, because she was a princess so and I think all fairy stories are horror stories with happy endings,” reveals Steven Knight about constructing his screenplay for “Spencer” as a fairy tale rather than just another biopic. “They’re all pretty horrific, children or people being captured in a castle,” he suggests. “So this fairy story, I wanted to tell with the knowledge that it should be quite scary, because we’re in her head and she’s quite scared.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

After a charged premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer has become one of this season’s hottest contenders. A haunting study of one particular Christmas at Sandringham for Diana, Princess of Wales, as her marriage falters and the Royal fairytale turns grim, Spencer features a landmark performance by Kristen Stewart that has catapulted her to the top of the Best Actress race. Joe Utichi meets Larraín and Stewart to dig deep into the production.
What was the jumping-off point for Pablo Larraín and Kristen Stewart for the film that would become Spencer? The pair share a look and laugh.
“It’s a very reasonable question,” Larraín says.
“And a reasonable start of a conversation,” Stewart agrees.
But it’s also impossible for them to know how to respond. “Depending on how we answer the conversation can go any which way, so which conversation is this going to be?...

“I think we as Latin Americans, are looking both sides at the same time,” declares editor Sebastián Sepúlveda about the unique perspective that he brings, along with director Pablo Larraín, to a film like “Spencer,” which explores a moment in time in the life of an iconic historical figure like Princess Diana.
The austere, dream-like quality of “Spencer” is similar to “Jackie,” the editor’s last collaboration with Larraín, which also explores a pivotal moment in time in the life of another icon, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “When you live in New York or here in Paris, you are like understanding your world as the entire world,” Sepúlveda explains. “I think you become more and more interested in ‘the other.’ It’s very important because it gives you humility. You’re very humble because you know that you’re not the center of everything.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Sepúlveda above.

An air of claustrophobia inhabits “Spencer,” Pablo Larraín’s psychological drama that follows a distressed Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) as she spends the Christmas of 1991 at the Royal Family’s Sandringham estate. That confinement spawns a sensation equal parts austere and foreboding despite all the opulence that surrounds it, one that veteran Production Designer Guy Hendrix Dyas meticulously crafted to mirror the unhappy noble’s headspace at a time when her troubled marriage to Prince Charles was nearing its end.

“Spencer,” Pablo Larraín’s magnificent movie about Princess Diana and how she freed herself from the life she chose, the life that made her a star, and the life that was killing her, opens with a sequence that’s staged, with a deadpan wink, to look like a thriller. At the Sandringham Estate, a preposterously large six-story country mansion that stands on 20,000 acres of the Norfolk Coast, a military convoy arrives, toting crates that look like they must contain oversize weapons. But no, they’re just carrying food — cascades of fruit and vegetables, lobsters the size of Ak-47s. It’s all in preparation for the three-day Christmas weekend, which the British royal family will be spending at Sandringham. The consumption of food — fresh, sweet, savory, luscious, opulent in its abundance — will be at the center of the festivities. As the cooks come in, they, too, walk in formation, and...

The colors are lavish and the gowns are magnificent, but there’s a sense of anguish and mystery in the first trailer for “Spencer,” the much-anticipated biopic about Princess Diana starring Kristen Stewart.
This first look shows Stewart struggling and drifting through these vast palace corridors, but there’s secrets she’s not showing, responding when one of her aides say, “They know everything” by calmly confiding, “They don’t.”
“Spencer” focuses on the one weekend when Princess Diana decided to leave her marriage to Prince Charles during Christmas 1991. Spencer was her maiden name before she wed the British royal. Here’s the full synopsis for the film:
December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game.

Apple TV Plus’ “Lisey’s Story” has been adapted for TV by Stephen King and is based on his bestselling 2006 novel of the same name. The story flits between past and present, fantasy and reality. Directed by “Jackie’s” Pablo Larrain, the audience never fully knows which is which, and in this perfect union of Larrain and King, it makes for a compelling watch.
The series stars Julianne Moore as Lisey Landon. Two years after the death of her husband, world-renowned novelist Scott Landon, Lisey has to face memories of her life and marriage to Scott, which leads her to face visions of unsettling realities.
However, it was up to production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas to bring King’s world to life, delivering his vision as well as Larrain’s. Much of the story centers around a New York farmhouse, a pool and a fantastical dream world of Boo’ya Moon.

Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) have joined Kristen Stewart in buzzed-about Lady Diana biopic Spencer, which is now filming in Germany before moving to the UK.
The producers have today released a first-look image of Stewart as the iconic Lady Di.
As Deadline first revealed, Jackie filmmaker Pablo Larraín is directing the Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) script about a weekend in the early ‘90s when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working and that she needed to veer from a path that had put her in line to one day be queen.
The drama takes place over three days in one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor in their Sandringham estate. The producers have not said who will play Prince Charles and their two children: Prince William and Prince Harry.

The calculated use of color and texture helped create the lavish look of Disney’s live-action version of a classic Christmas story in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” which debuted Nov. 2.
Key contributors to the film’s aesthetic, which grounds fantasy in a palpable reality, were costume designer Jenny Beavan, a multiple Oscar nominee and two-time winner, and production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas, a two-time nominee.
Dyas came on to the project accompanied by a team of concept artists and sought to find an emotional center for Clara (played by Mackenzie Foy). He recalled intense films from his childhood and tried to find the same beats in her journey. “I didn’t want her to feel like she was on a merry-go-round from beginning to end,” he says. “I wanted her to have those darker moments.”

To draw audiences into Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms — the latest retelling of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic holiday tale that inspired the famous Tchaikovsky-scored ballet — production designer Guy Hendrix Dyas, a two-time Oscar nominee (for Inception and Passengers), relies on a sudden burst of color.
The film, opening Nov. 2, begins in the home of its young heroine Clara (Mackenzie Foy) that is "sort of cold and devoid of red," says Dyas. It's drained of warm colors so "the audiences can sympathize with the actors." As soon as Clara arrives ...

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.
I have not noted a “should win” for the feature documentary category,...

The 89th Annual Academy Awards kicked off Sunday at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center, and as expected, the A-Listers came dressed to impress.
La La Land star Emma Stone wowed in a classy, custom-created Givenchy gown, while Hidden Figures star Taraji P. Henson opted for a blue velvet Alberta Ferretti dress, which featured a thigh-high slit. The men looked just as handsome, with Stone's co-star, Ryan Gosling, sporting a Gucci suit, and Fifty Shades Darker star Jamie Dornan in a cream-colored tuxedo jacket.
And while the red carpet looks were undoubtedly fabulous, all eyes were on the night's big winners. See the full list of everyone who took home a shiny statuette and check back throughout the night for updates!

Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards are underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney took to the stage at the Dolby Theatre in a popular adapted screenplay win for Moonlight as the drama earned its second win of the night.
Moments earlier Kenneth Lonergan accepted the original screenplay award for Manchester By The Sea in the film’s first prize. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – winners of this award for Good Will Hunting 19 years ago – presented the honour to Lonergan. Damon was a producer on the film.
Meryl Streep used her Oscar show platform to pay subtle homage to the unifying power of film when she joined Javier Bardem on stage at the Dolby Theatre to present the cinematography award.
“Truth is hard to reveal,” Streep said, “but when it happens on the movie screen filmgoers no matter where they are from, feel their hearts soar.”

Yesterday afternoon, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (or BAFTA, as they’re known) handed out their awards, with the ceremony being televised a few hours later. They’re one of the last major precursors, with this year being especially noteworthy. Today, Oscar voters have ballots in their hands, so this event was the last one during the calm before the final storm. BAFTA is often considered a strong predictor of the Academy Awards, but that’s as much by reputation as statistics. Nothing yesterday necessarily changed up what a voter is potentially marking off today on their ballots. There was some potential intrigue added to the race, and that’s what we’ll have to keep an eye on going forward. I’ll share a few other precursors that announced over the weekend below, but obviously BAFTA was the most notable one. The big prizes went more or less as expected,...

The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.
As expected, “La La Land” continued its storybook run through awards season, with David Wasco’s team winning for Contemporary Film. In an upset, Wynn Thomas and the team from “Hidden Figures” took home honors in Period Film, despite “Hail, Caesar!” being the only of the category’s nominees to also pick up a nom for Oscars night. “It’s been a long journey to this moment,” said Thomas, who described being nominated at the very first Art Directors Guild award for “Mars Attacks!” “I’m so...

Best Picture favorite “La La Land” dominated the Oscar craft categories with nine nominations — Cinematography, Production and Costume Design, Editing, Original Score and two Songs, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. “La La Land” exceeded even “Mad Max: Fury Road’s” eight nods last year.

Bradford Young (“Arrival”) became the first African-American cinematographer nominee for his poetic imagery in “Arrival,” after being snubbed for “Selma.” In “Arrival” he envelops Amy Adams in a strange, ethereal atmosphere inside the alien ship with the heptapods, helping to convey the importance of unifying a divided world. By contrast, her time-bending moments with her daughter are shot like naturalistic portraitures.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

Today brings some good news and some bad news when it comes to the forthcoming Apple pioneer biopic. First up, we’ll deliver the latter: most audiences won’t get to see Danny Boyle‘s Steve Jobs as early as expected. Instead of a wide release on October 9th, Universal Pictures will now release the Aaron Sorkin-scripted film only in New York and Los Angeles on that date, before expanding the following weekend and going wide on October 23rd. As for the good news, we’ve now got another look at the film thanks to a new trailer.
“For the most part, this is the filmmaker’s most reined-in picture in some time, as if a too-kinetic approach would interfere with the verbal energy of Sorkin’s script.” Variety said in their review. “Besides Guy Hendrix Dyas’ unobtrusively excellent production design, the picture’s major visual coup is the...

But the movies were slow to incorporate the metal baddies given their cost, and only now have we seen them in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. However, director Bryan Singer had long planned to incorporate them into the films, even figuring out how they would fit into X2: X-Men United. Guy Hendrix Dyas and Ricardo Delgado were tasked with coming up with Sentinel conceptual designs, and they've revealed those to FilmSketchr. You can catch your first glimpse of what these villains were meant to look like, before Bryan Singer and Fox decided that the extra $8 million required to visualize these robots for X2 was just too rich for anyone's blood. "The Sentinels were considered briefly for the X-Men sequel, and I drew up a version to a great collective yawn from everyone involved." said Ricardo Delgado. As you can tell, the models we could have seen in X2 vary greatly when compared to what we saw in Days of Future Past. The sentinels here are much more clunky and robotic, while the models we saw in Dofp are slick and thin. Around the time of X2's release, Bryan Singer, the director of X-Men, X2, and Days of Future Past, told TotalFilm that "We felt, for X2, the concept of giant robots is a difficult sell. But it's definitely something we may have room for in the future.". Simon Kinberg told If Magazine "There never was a Sentinel script that veered away from the story we ended up with.
