As of this writing, it has been over two days since Future and Metro Boomin dropped their first full-length collaboration, We Don’t Trust You, and it has almost been completely overshadowed by a Kendrick Lamar cameo. The track on which he appears, “Like That,” prominently features Rodney O and Joe Cooley’s 1987 single “Everlasting Bass,” and Metro uses it like Three 6 Mafia did throughout their discography, from “Where Da Bud At” to “Who the Crunkest.” Thanks in part to the Mafia, “Everlasting Bass” has become an avatar of Jheri-curled hardness,...

Jeopardy!‘s Tournament of Champions is bigger than ever this year.
To celebrate its 40th season, the American trivia institution invited a record-breaking 27 contestants to its hallowed annual tourney featuring the previous season’s best champions. (It also certainly didn’t hurt that the show needed to add some extra tournaments for ToC eligibility due to the Hollywood writers strike messing with its usual production schedule).
The expanded contestant count has given Jeopardy! the opportunity to invite back some intriguing contenders who didn’t hit the required benchmark of at least five wins in their initial run. It’s also meant that the show has gotten to try something it’s never done before: bring on a Celebrity Jeopardy! champion to contend with the “real” trivia masters.
Said Celebrity Jeopardy! champ on this year’s ToC is comedic actor Ike Barinholtz, who you may know from his time on Mad TV,...

Grammy Awards viewers are accusing Taylor Swift of giving Celine Dion the cold shoulder.
On Sunday, February 4, the best of the best in the music industry attended the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, which commenced at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.
Taylor may have come away a winner on Sunday night, but that didn’t mean her critics were impressed with her behavior.
Taylor accepted the Grammy Awards’ Album of the Year award, walking away with a coveted gramophone trophy, the 14th for the legendary pop star.
But, it wasn’t necessarily Taylor’s win that rubbed her critics the wrong way, but rather the way she accepted it.
Taking the stage to present the Album of the Year winner was iconic songstress Celine Dion, making a rare public appearance amid her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (Sps).

A story about Jim Carrey might make him sound like a cheesy 1980s infomercial psychic telling you to "visualize it, dream it, attain it." But how Jim Carrey-esque of him, after all. Carrey exploded onto the scene in 1994 with "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." But he'd been plugging away at comedy since the 1970s — first with standup and then small movie roles throughout the 1980s. His profile began to grow with a starring role on Fox's sketch show "In Living Color."
In 1994, Morgan Creek Entertainment put down 450,000 on a lottery ticket with Carrey as the lead in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." It was a gamble, as some thought Carrey's over-the-top style might not work. Spoiler alert: It did.
Morgan Creek Entertainment cashed in their lotto ticket to the tune of 100 million at the box office, and Carrey became a bona fide Hollywood A-lister. He had a string of hits including "The Mask...

Kim Kardashian's kids are serving up the perfect group Halloween costume inspiration. On Oct. 28, the Skims founder posted Instagram photos of North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm posing in a studio dressed as famous R&b stars Aaliyah, Snoop Dogg, Sade, and Eazy-e, respectively. She captioned the carousel, "The Icons."
Channeling Aaliyah was 9-year-old North, wearing a colorblock Tommy Hilfiger set similar to the one the late singer wore in her famous 1996 campaign for the fashion brand. Kardashian's eldest daughter wore her hair stick straight and parted down the middle, just like the "One in a Million" singer often did in the '90s.
Saint, 6, dressed like Snoop Dogg in a plaid shirt, khakis, and Converse, with his hair styled in braids similar to the rapper's hairstyle over the years, most notably in a scene from his 2001 film "Baby Boy." Meanwhile, 4-year-old Chicago mimicked Nigerian British singer Sade's signature denim-on-denim look,...

In the late 1990s, after teaching herself screenplay structure by way of reading Viki King’s seminal go-to manual “How to Write a Movie in 21 Days,” Andrea Berloff emerged with her first feature script titled “Liberty,” a comedy set in a small-town Ohio dart tournament.
“I had no idea at that point that there were three acts in a movie — I’d never had a class in it,” says Berloff, who cut her teeth as a theater major at Cornell U., poring over Greek tragedies and Shakespeare’s dramas.
And while “very few people read that script,” the friends who gave “Liberty” a look served as “encouragement to keep writing,” says Berloff, who would go on to option her second, the biopic “Harry and Caresse” to Fine Line (the then-specialty division of New Line) in 2003, pen the Oliver Stone drama “World Trade Center” and net an Academy Award nomination for co-writ- ing,...

Coolio, the Grammy-winning Compton rapper who was behind the global hit “Gangsta’s Paradise,” has died. He was 59.
His manager, Jarez Posey, told The Hollywood Reporter that Coolio died Wednesday afternoon at a friend’s house in Los Angeles. “He went to use the bathroom and never came out,” he said. No cause of death was given.
Indelibly associated with West Coast hip-hop and gangsta rap, Coolio reached worldwide success in the mid 1990s with three of his albums — It Takes a Thief (1994), Gangsta’s Paradise (1995) and My Soul (1997) — crossing over into the mainstream, driven by a clutch of more chart-friendly singles, including “Fantastic Voyage,” “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “C U When U Get There.” The single “Gangsta’s Paradise,” featuring R&b singer L.V., was boosted by its appearance in the 1995 Michelle Pfeiffer drama Dangerous Minds and went on to sell over 5 million copies worldwide.

A new documentary will tell the story about the fight against HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles.
Apla Health announced on Wednesday, World AIDS Day, that production has begun on “Commitment to Life,” a feature-length doc about how AIDS activists, doctors, celebrities and studio executives changed the course of the epidemic. The film will feature stories about Rock Hudson, Eazy-e, Elizabeth Taylor, David Geffen, the making of “Philadelphia,” the creation of the red ribbon, the local Act Up chapter and Apla.
“As a filmmaker, I have told stories about the LGBTQ+ community through the lives of some of its trailblazers. But no story has the epic sweep, heart wrenching drama, and galvanizing emotion as that of the AIDS crisis in Los Angeles. It’s a story that has yet to be fully told, and it’s a film that demanded to be made. ‘Commitment to Life’ is that film,” director Jeffrey Schwarz said in statement.

WEtv has ordered The Mysterious Death of Eazy-e and the four-part limited series will investigate the gangsta rap icon’s 1995. It comes from Critical Content.

As a candidate in the Democratic primaries, Kamala Harris stood astride the fault lines of the Democratic Party. The Californian presented herself as an establishment politician (reaching the Senate after serving as San Francisco’s Da and California’s attorney general) whose platform was responsive to the idealism of the party’s grassroots. Megan Thee Stallion has dropped new song, “Girls in the Hood.” The track interpolates Eazy-e and N.W.A’s classic 1987 single, “Boyz-n-the-Hood.”
“I’m a hot girl, I do hot shit … ” she raps on the hook. “I don’t text quick, ’cause I ain’t thirsty/These bitches mad, mad, they wanna hurt me.” She also puts her own spin on Eazy-e’s original lyrics: “‘Cause the girls in the hood are always hard/Ever since 16 I’ve been having a job/Knowing nothing in life, but I gotta...

Over the last week, N.W.A’s fierce indictment of racial injustice, “Fuck tha Police,” has become the anthem of a revolution, as thousands all over the world have taken to the streets in outrage over the wrongful killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Protesters have scrawled the song title on the homemade signs they wave and spray-painted it to walls. They’ve also been playing the 32-year-old track, which appeared on the group’s landmark Straight Outta Compton LP, so much that it experienced...

Do you get the feeling that some actors forget that they’re part of a movie and get a little lost at times? As Kevin Burwick of MovieWeb reminds us, Jason Mitchell played the role of Eazy-e in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton in a way that a lot of people won’t soon forget, but this current weapons and drug charge are making it appear that the actor might have thought that the life was a little too appealing to give up. Just recently he was pulled over and found to be in the possession of an Ak-47 and a Glock 19

Jason Mitchell, who you may know from his roles in Kong: Skull Island and Straight Outta Compton, was arrested in Mississippi on Wednesday on four felony drug and weapons charges, according to law enforcement. Mitchell portrayed Eazy-e in the 2015 N.W.A. biopic and showed up as Mills in Skull Island.
After being stopped by Harrison County police, the officers found an Ak-47 semi-automatic and a Glock 19 pistol. In addition to the weapons, they found two pounds of marijuana and 1,300 doses of Mdma. The official charges are possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon.
“The weed and ecstasy were packaged in a manner consistent with a mid-level distribution operation,” said police.
Meanwhile, a representative for Mitchell released a statement on the matter, explaining:
“Jason is at home with his family right now, working on an amazing new project.

It’s almost unheard of for musicians to change their name after 25 years, especially when that change is part of a marketing campaign for an American casual dining restaurant known for their chicken wings. In either a coup for marketing professionals everywhere or a sign that no one (even legendary hip-hop groups) are immune to capitalism’s allure, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony announced on February 19th that their new name is Boneless Thugs-n-Harmony — a homage to Buffalo Wild Wings.
In addition to the overarching name swap, three members of the group will also go by new monikers.

Among the other things Eddie Murphy’s rapturously received new comedy has going for it, “Dolemite Is My Name” might be the movie musical of the year, in spirit, if not wholly in form. At least, there are a few sequences where its real-life protagonist, comedian/musician/actor Rudy Ray Moore, breaks into a kind of proto-hip-hop performance mode. The rest of the movie has nearly wall-to-wall music, whether it’s the ‘70s hits of Marvin Gaye and Sly & the Family Stone or an original score that harks back to the blaxploitation era’s funk-filled glory days.
Marrying music and movies comes naturally to director Craig Brewer, who offered a more contemporary take on hip-hop with “Hustle & Flow,” and his house composer, fellow Memphis native Scott Bomar, a founder of the neo-soul group the Bo-Keys. Plus, you’d be hard-pressed to find screenwriter-producers who know their ‘70s music better...

There will not be any room for Jason Mitchell to return for “The Chi” in Season 3 of the Showtime drama.
Gary Levine, Showtime’s co-president of entertainment, said Friday that Mitchell’s character on the series will be killed off in the new season.
“There is a lot of great life in ‘The Chi’ and there’s also death in ‘The Chi’ and that’s how we’ll be dealing with it,” Levine said during the Television Critics Association summer press tour Friday.
It was revealed in May that Mitchell had been fired from the series due to allegations of harassment from showrunner Ayanna Floyd Davis and co-star Tiffany Boone. It was subsequently revealed that Mitchell had engaged in similar behavior on the set of the Netflix film “Desperados,” leading to his dimissal from that project as well.

Game of Thrones documentary "The Last Watch" reveals motivations of the Night King.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards have rescinded the nomination of The Chi star Jason Mitchell in the Best Performance In a Show category, just more than a week after Deadline’s scoop that the actor was dropped from several projects — including from the Lena Waithe-created Showtime series — amid allegations of inappropriate behavior.
Mitchell, who rose to fame playing Eazy-e in Straight Outta Compton, played Brandon in the Chicago ensemble series, a spotlight character in Season 2. In light of the seriousness of the on-set misconduct allegations, show producer Fox 21 TV Studios opted not to pick up his option for the upcoming Season 3.
The accusations led to Mitchell being dropped by his agency, UTA; his management company, Authentic Talent & Literary Management; and a Netflix movie he had been cast in as a lead, Desperados.

After his breakout performance as Eazy-e in Straight Outta Compton and his role as a World War II veteran in the critically acclaimed Mudbound, Jason Mitchell’s career was flourishing. Lena Waithe, describing Mitchell as the “black Tom Hanks,” cast the 32-year-old rising star in her Showtime series The Chi as Brandon, an aspiring chef who resists being drawn into violence. Then, in late April, Mitchell was fired from the upcoming Netflix movie Desperados just before shooting began. In rapid succession, he was terminated by his agent, his manager and his lawyer, and he was dropped from The Chi.

Actor Jason Mitchell has exited Netflix movie “Desperados” following an investigation into an accusation about off-set behavior, a person familiar with the matter told TheWrap. He’s also parted ways with his agency, UTA.
Additionally, Showtime has confirmed that Mitchell will not be a part of “The Chi” Season 3. Mitchell, who played Brandon Johnson on the Lena Waithe-created series, was considered the lead of the show and this month received an MTV Movie & TV Awards nomination for Best Performance in a Show.
Showtime did not comment beyond that, but a rep for Fox 21, which produces “The Chim” said Mitchell’s option for Season 3 was not picked up. The studio had no comment or statement beyond that.

Jason Mitchell Not Returning for ‘The Chi’ Season 3, Faces Potential Misconduct Allegations — Report
After two seasons as a face of the Showtime series “The Chi,” Jason Mitchell will not be returning to the series for Season 3. Jason Mitchell is being dropped from a number of his current and upcoming projects.
Variety has confirmed that the up and coming actor will not return for “The Chi’s” already announced third season, with Season 2 of the show currently airing on Showtime. Exclusive: Rising star actor Jason Mitchell is facing a career crisis over allegations of inappropriate behavior. The specifics are sketchy, but I hear the accusations were so serious they have led to Mitchell being dropped by his agency, UTA; management company, Authentic Talent & Literary Management; a Netflix movie he had been cast in as a lead, Desperados; and the successful Showtime drama he stars in, The Chi.
I hear the dismissal from dramedy Desperados, a Good Universe production for Netflix, came first. I hear the decision was made after the producers had received information about an alleged off-set incident. The incident was investigated immediately and thoroughly, leading to Mitchell’s termination from Desperados, in which he was to star opposite Nasim Pedrad, Anna Camp and Robbie Amell.
A rep for Good Universe confirmed Mitchell has left the movie, declining further comment.
Mitchell was also quickly fired by UTA and Authentic.

Twenty-eight years ago, John Singleton’s feature debut “Boyz n the Hood” (1991) opened a cinematic window into the bleak realities of life in South Central Los Angeles. It also created something entirely new: While Spike Lee paved the way, “Boyz n the Hood” arguably made Singleton the first studio filmmaker to find mainstream commercial success while representing a little-represented part of society. By tackling a very thorny subject in a way that had rarely been seen in a film of its caliber, it humanized its characters as victims of larger systemic issues rather than stereotypes.
“When we first did the movie, we felt like we was teaching America about a part of itself that they don’t see,” co-star of the film Ice Cube told MTV in 2011. “We was teaching you about people like Doughboy and why he is the way he is.”

John Singleton had just turned 24 when the Academy Award nominations were announced in January 1992, making him the youngest filmmaker ever to compete for a best director statue — as well as the first African-American to do so. This was a quarter-century before #OscarSoWhite hashtag started holding the Academy to task for slighting voices of color. Like Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” “Boyz” was not nominated for best picture. He started young, and he left us too young, when he died Monday at 51.
Singleton’s bombshell debut “Boyz N the Hood” made him the hottest name in Hollywood for a time, leading to a string of films that changed the industry’s and audiences’ idea of the black experience, for the better. Jason Mitchell first caught the mainstream eye in 2015 for his critically-acclaimed performance as an ill-fated rapper Eazy-e in the Nwa biopic Straight Outta Compton.
