- She was born in Brooklyn, New York, but moved to North Carolina when she was five years old. When she moved back to New York, she had a southern accent but soon lost it.

She first met him when she was 20 years old, and had been called in to replace an actress in what she called her "second professional non-paying job". As she walked into the playwrights' workshop at 12 midnight, she heard the big booming voice of her future husband firing her predecessor.
