Roku Channel has cut a deal with actor B.J. Novak’s ChainFest to air an hourlong special about the food festival that celebrates the culinary creations of chain restaurants.
Novak and chef Tim Hollingsworth created what is billed as an “immersive dining experience” that celebrates the pleasures of fast food and fast casual chain restaurants such as Chili’s, Panda Express, Pizza Hut, Red Robin and more. The event turns the tables on most food festivals by embracing the mass appeal of burgers and fries and such. The concept began in 2021 with a series of stealth pop-up events around Los Angeles. The first ChainFest was staged Dec. 1-3 in Hollywood at Nya Studios.
“We love chains. And it’s not just their playful trademarked dishes or silly mascots that we love, it’s that they have deep emotional resonance with hundreds of millions of people, across generations, across backgrounds. It’s...

The Roku Channel will shine a spotlight on the work of the veteran-led disaster response organization Team Rubicon through an unscripted series set to premiere May 25 from the production team behind PBS’ “This Old House.”
“Team Rubicon” follows the organization’s volunteers as they are sent off in deployments across the country and overseas to help the neediest victims of natural and man-made disasters, from the recent storms in Selma, Ala., to the recent record snowfalls in mountain communities north of San Bernardino, Calif.
The half-hour series, hosted by “This Old House’s” Kevin O’Connor, documents the real-world impact of extreme weather events and how the heaviest burdens fall hardest on the poorest communities and most vulnerable residents. The 13 self-contained episodes also emphasize the importance that volunteering plays for servicemembers in their transition to civilian life.

Roku City is about to get a bit more crowded.
The recognizable screen saver on Roku devices is best known for featuring locations, buildings and characters from beloved films and TV shows (like King Kong scaling the Empire State building, or a fire house that looks suspiciously like the headquarters for the Ghostbusters).
But at its Newfront presentation to marketers on Tuesday, Roku unveiled a much requested new offering: Roku City brand experiences, which will let brands “become unmissable to the nearly 40 million homes that enjoy Roku City each month,” per the company. First up is fast food giant McDonald’s.

The moves are the first significant ones in the executive suite since former Fox and AMC Networks exec Charlie Collier arrived last year as president of Roku Media.

Roku Media President Charlie Collier has implemented his first major executive shake-up since joining the company from Fox Entertainment in November, elevating David Eilenberg to oversee content across the media division, a Roku spokesperson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Eilenberg will succeed Rob Holmes, who currently serves as vp programming and is set to depart in March after six years at Roku. During that time, Holmes helped oversee the launch of The Roku Channel and led the company’s transition into original content. In a memo to staff announcing the changes, obtained by THR, Collier said Holmes would focus on “ongoing strategic projects” before his departure. “He’s a partner and friend to many of us, and to be clear, this announcement is by no means Rob’s final send-off; there will be more on Rob and his many contributions in the days ahead. For now, I will simply say thank you,...

Roku leadership is experiencing its first big shakeup under new chief Charlie Collier, with current vice president of programming Rob Holmes deciding to depart the company in March after six years, and head of originals, David Eilenberg, being promoted to head of content across all of Roku Media.
A Turner and ITV Studios vet, Eilenberg’s elevation will bring content at Roku Originals and Roku Studios under one leader, and signals Collier’s focus on Roku’s platform advantages and creative as it enters its next stage of evolution as a media company that has racked up WGA, DGA and PGA nominations, as well as its first Critics’ Choice wins, in recent months — but also experienced a severe stock drop on poor earnings results and outlook.
Eilenberg joined Roku in March 2022, coming into his then-role ahead of former Fox Entertainment CEO Collier’s appointment as president of Roku Media last October.

Roku has enlisted Village Roadshow to handle international sales on the streaming company’s original film Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
The agreement encompasses sales of the project in all global markets except the U.S., Canada, the UK and Latin America. Village Roadshow will oversee global sales of television, streaming and home entertainment rights to Weird, which debuted Nov. 4 on the Roku Channel.
While the streaming provider has not given exact stats, it says the film had the biggest opening weekend audience in the five-year history of the Roku Channel. More of the company’s 65 million-plus active accounts visiting the Roku Channel on Nov. 4 than on any other day, and the film had more unique views than any other on-demand title.
The two companies forged a similar pact for Heathers: The Musical, a live stage adaptation of the 1988 movie that premiered on the Roku Channel in September.

For their biggest original film to date, the “Weird Al” Yankovic parody biopic Weird, Roku has enlisted Village Roadshow to help sell the film internationally.
Village Roadshow Entertainment Group will oversee the sale of television, streaming and home entertainment rights to Weird in all global markets, excluding the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Latin America.
The Roku Channel, which operates in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Mexico, debuted Weird: The Al Yankovic Story on Nov. 4 after a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Eric Appel, who co-wrote the screenplay with Yankovic, Weird stars Daniel Radcliffe as a subversive version of Yankovic who spends the runtime partying with Madonna and swilling whiskey on stage.

Roku on Thursday revealed it would cut 200 U.S. jobs, or 5 percent of its payroll expenses, “to slow down the Company’s 2023 operating expense growth rate due to current economic conditions,” according to an SEC filing. The actual headcount reduction is 7 percent, a person with knowledge of the layoffs told IndieWire.
In the public filing, Roku estimated the layoffs will cost the company 28 million to 31 million in severance, benefits, and related costs. Those charges will mostly be recognized in the fourth quarter, and will be “substantially complete” by the end of Q1 2023.
“Due to the current economic conditions in our industry, we have made the difficult decision to reduce Roku’s headcount expenses by a projected 5, to slow down our OpEx growth rate,” Roku said in a statement that didn’t differ much from the filing. “This will affect approximately 200 employee positions in the U.S. Taking these actions now...

Roku Gets Down With Weird Al
Eilenberg! Right ahead!: I sat down, albeit virtually, with Roku’s Head of Originals David Eilenberg for an exclusive interview as the free streaming service launched feature Weird: The Al Yankovic Story this week. Roku’s a company that many in the content game are watching closely, as it begins rolling out internationally under the command of former Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier, who unexpectedly made the switch at the end of October. Eilenberg, the former Chief Content Officer of ITV America, has been working on a slate of films and TV shows since he joined earlier this year.

Roku has welcomed Netflix into the ad streaming market.
As SVoD service Netflix this week launches a low-cost, ad-supported tier in 12 territories, Roku Head of Originals David Eilenberg said his platform doesn’t see a direct threat and instead is focused on the benefits of long-term market changes.
“We believe the that the catalytic effect of [Netflix’s entrance] will have on the holistic shift from linear to streaming on ad spend outweighs short-term competition,” he said.
He also argued that the Roku box is a “fundamentally different” product to Netflix and other low-cost streamers “as ours is truly free and they ultimately require a monthly subscription, even at a reduced fee. They resonate differently with consumers.”
Netflix is also available through Roku in the U.S. “All of these companies who are competitors in one respect are partners in another,” said Eilenberg.

Roku’s splashy hire of Charlie Collier, former CEO of Fox Entertainment and president of AMC, has sent a clear signal about the company’s ambition to make more noise with original programming.
The question now among Wall Streeters and industryites: Exactly how noisy will Roku try to get, and at what cost? And what’s a pure-play tech firm doing in the Hollywood sandbox anyway, at a time when other distributors are withdrawing from the pricey content game?
Collier will officially join the fold next month in New York, shortly before the debut of Roku’s biggest original yet, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. The 12 million non-biopic, starring Danielle Radcliffe, will land on the Roku Channel on November 4 after a festival run beginning with its well-received world premiere this month in Toronto.

Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier is leaving the linear network to join Roku. He joins as President, Roku Media, effective in late October, based in New York.
The surprising move is a major statement of intent from Roku.
Collier will oversee advertising and content at the digital streaming company. He will run Roku Media globally, managing its ad platform business as well as content for Roku’s owned and operated channels, including The Roku Channel.
During his time with the Fox linear network, which came largely after the sale of most of 21st Century Fox to the Walt Disney Company, he was responsible for launching Studio Ramsay Global with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, launching Blockchain Creative Labs, and acquiring Bento Box Entertainment and MarVista Entertainment.
Roku increasingly has been getting into the original content game. It acquired the assets of short-lived shortform service Quibi and hired former ITV America Chief...
