Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

Early in Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See, based on Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Daniel LeBlanc (Mark Ruffalo) unveils a three-dimensional replica of his Parisian neighborhood for his blind daughter, Marie-Laure (played as a child by Nell Sutton). “It’s an image right off the pages of the novel,” says director Shawn Levy, who helmed the five-episode series. “I remember imagining [it] so vividly years ago when I read the book.”
Levy — whose film credits include Free Guy and the upcoming Deadpool 3 — admits the World War II drama is unlike anything he’s done before. “I picked creative partners who understood this needed an aesthetic language,” he says, noting that photography director Tobias A. Schliessler and production designer Simon Elliott brought “texture, art and atmosphere” to LeBlanc’s home. “In order to understand the trauma of Daniel and Marie fleeing Paris, we need to establish their world first,...

‘All the Light We Cannot See’ panel: A global casting search finds two needles in a haystack [Watch]
People will look at the cast of the epic Netflix limited series adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II-themed novel “All the Light We Cannot See” from author Anthony Doerr and finds a few names that catch their eye – specifically Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie. They’re big names with decades-long acting pedigrees, after all. But the real stars of the four-parter that premieres in its entirety on November 2 are two females you have never heard of – one a young child, the other a young woman – for whom the series is their introduction to performing: Nell Sutton and Aria Mia Loberti.
The two portray the same role a decade or so apart and are the product of a global casting search for actresses to play the lead character Marie-Laure LeBlanc. As “All the Light We Cannot See” casting director Lucy Bevan told an audience at the DGA Theater in...

Director Shawn Levy and the creative team behind Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See took part in a panel conversation on Tuesday, where they discussed how the project became more timely than they ever imagined.
The show is adapted from the Pulitzer-winning World War II novel by Anthony Doerr, which follows a blind French girl who takes refuge in Saint-Malo after Paris is invaded by Nazi Germany and a German boy who is recruited to join the Nazi army because of his skills in radio technology, also leading him to Saint-Malo.
Levy told the crowd at a Los Angeles special screening that he first read and fell in the love with the book as a fan and had no plans of working on an adaptation, especially because the novel’s rights belonged to someone else at the time, who planned to make it into a film rather than a series.

Arranged marriage is a tried-and-true trope in Bollywood romcoms, which typically champion love and social progress over tradition, even if they’ve hardly moved the needle for decades despite the genre’s immense popularity. Though set in London and revolving around arranged marriage in the South Asian diaspora, it’s easy to make assumptions about Toronto Film Festival premiere “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” based on genre conventions and cliché.
But this is most definitely not what Bollywood romcom enthusiasts might expect. For starters, the story concerns overseas Pakistanis and not Indians. The film also doesn’t outright frame arranged marriage as something outdated and stifling. If anything, it encourages viewers to not rush to judgment.
Moreover, its protagonist is actually a white woman. Zoe (Lily James), is a socially conscious documentary filmmaker from an ethnically diverse part of London. Her mother, Cath (Emma Thompson), while fully embracing the multiculturalism around her,...

Having absolutely nothing to do with the Tina Turner biopic of the same name (minus the question mark), What’s Love Got To Do With It? serves as a master class in how to adhere faithfully to the classic romantic-comedy template and yet still emerge with something that delivers delightfully on both sides of the hyphen.
Serving as the first foray into the rom-com arena for filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, of Elizabeth and Bandit Queen renown, the effervescent cross-culture confection may not be the first to examine the practice of arranged marriage in the age of Tinder, but Kapur’s soulful touch, working from a knowing script by Jemima Khan, hits all the desired marks.
Top it off with a lovely lead performance by Lily James and a bitingly funny one by Emma Thompson, and you’ve got the type of world premiere TIFF entry...

In the ultra swanky Kings Road on Monday night, the stars came out at the Curzon Chelsea for the premiere of Burke and Hare, the new John Landis movie (his first in 12 years), starring Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis and Isla Fisher. Landis was charming and animated, Serkis very quiet, and Jessica Hynes, the epitome of 40s glamour.
While the paps froze outside, press and bloggers alike got a few moments with key players:
Isla Fisher (on her accent) Of course, my parents are Scottish, but I don’t have an accent. Luckily Simon Pegg’s wife is Scottish, so she gave me plenty of advice on keeping it right.
(on her role)…It was great fun to play Ginny, after all she’s Burke’s muse, what spurs him on to do these dreadful things. I think the film does have a moral centre though, I mean you do see...
